PREFACE

“You will learn about the road by travelling than by


consulting all the maps in the world”

In relation to the above quote, it can be said that


practical exposure is necessary along with the theoretical
aspect.

Industrial exposure for an M.B.A. student is an


essential factor; to enlighten his ability to understand the
business tactics and various aspects of the actual
corporate. Practical training has been incorporated in the
curriculum of M.B.A. which enables the management
student to get familiarized and understand the practical
aspect of management.

This practical training develops sense of


professionalism in student. Thus, student knows how the
theoretical aspects of classroom have been implemented
in business.

In M.B.A. course, practical training is


compulsory for both the years for a student. A student
compulsorily needs to undergo summer training in any
company and make the project report on the basis of the
training.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. is a Ltd. company
owned by Mr. Pradeep Chona with excellent infrastructure
facility, using modern technology, having efficient
production capacity, highly professional human capital and
efficient Management.

The company consists of all the major departments


and functioning that can be considered important for any
highly professional and successful company. It includes the
departments and functions like marketing, finance and
accounts, production, H.R., purchase, dispatch,
maintenance, research and development, Advertising and
Management information System.

The company was founded in 1944 by Late. Shree


Satish Chona in Karachi (In Undivided India) and finally set
up at Ahmedabad.
The human resource structure of Havmor Ice
Cream Ltd. consists of total 978 people performing
different functions.

The company’s product range consists of variety


of products like candies , roll cuts , novelties, cups, packs,
bars ,topo cones, fresh fruits ice creams, child specialties,
ready to eat range , take away packs and kulfis.

The company is having 35 % market share in


Gujarat, with 5000 plus dealers and around 40 parlours in
and around Ahmedabad.

The company’s U.S.P. is 100 % ice cream.

The company’s strengths are its network, product


quality, product range, market credibility, brand
awareness, efficient production capacity, strong
infrastructure and good cold chain and distribution system.

 HISTORY OF THE
ORGANIZATION
HAVMOR ICE CREAM LTD. was
founded in 1944,in Karachi (in undivided india) by
Shri satish Chona and became a popular brand
overthere at that time. But, in 1947, due to the
partition of india, its founder had to join the exodus
into india, with virtually no movable assets. His
founder searching for a new turf , tried out Dehra Dun
& Indore and finally settled down in Ahmedabad.

With small beginning ,Big vision and Great


ambitions, Mr. Satish Chona had began the
journey in Ahmedabad , with a hand-cart at the
Ahmedabad Railway Station, churning out the
Ice cream manually.

He called this fledgling brand ‘HAVMOR’ – a


neologism for ‘Have More’ – which meant the
customer got more value for money and more taste to
relish from his ice creams.

With the blessings of his father( Late.Mr.Satish


Chona),his son Mr. Pradeep Chona continued the
journey of his father and now has changed the
face of Havmor Ice cream Ltd. as one of the most favorite
ice cream brand of western India and today it has been
positioned among the Top Three in sales in Gujarat.
Today, Havmor Ice cream is a delicious facet of
western India’s daily life with market share of 35 %, having
a strong dealer network of more than 5000 Dealers and
around 40 Parlours, Factory with Ultra-Modern Technology
and Machineries and Office with a large amount of
qualified Human Capital in the company.

Today, Mr. Pradeep Chona heads the Havmor


conglomerate and he has continued his father’s obsession
and streak to innovation.

Favoring innovation , he added a suffix – “ Navu Su Che?


” to his father’s motto – “ Achchai,Sachchai,Safai ”.

Till date, Mr. Pradeep Chona , set off a series of


changes at Havmor – in technology, in quality and hygiene
standards , in management , in HRD and in overall
corporate environment.

This re – engineering was complemented by


capacity expansions and a flurry of promotional activities,
to maintain co.’s market presence in competitive times.

And all these efforts of Mr.Pradeep Chona and


each and every member of the company has greately
helped to make Havmor as one of the most successful Ice
cream brand today.

April, 2008 .

 The certificate given by The Taj Residency Ummed


(Ahmedabad) on 14’th July ,2001 appreciating the
range of ice creams served by Havmor ice cream ltd.
which also states that the range of ice cream served
by Havmor ice cream ltd.has been greatly appreciated
by Mr. Bill Clinton ( former president of U.S.A. ) during
his stay at Taj Residency Ummed,Ahmedabad.

on 24-sept.-2008.

 Apart from these, Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. has also


signed the MOU in the Vibrant Gujarat summit ,2009.

 COMPOSITION OF THE WORK-


FORCE

The human resource structure of Havmor Ice Cream


Ltd. is made up of total 978 people.

After learning the business tactics from his father,


when Mr. Pradeep Chona started his first shop; at
that time its human resource structure was made up of
only 4 people.

But, today it consists of around one thousand


people, in which around 50 people are employed
at the head office, around 600 workers at the
factory site; along with around 70 people in the
office staff at the factory.

Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. consists of total


around 58 executives and around 35
managerial level personnel.

The Qualification from the bottom to top level


also ranges from 10th passed people to highly qualified
professionals.
 COMMUNICATION SYSTEM IN
THE

ORGANIZATION
Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. consists of a one - way
communication system. There is a top to bottom
communication in the company.
The communication system of Havmor Ice
Cream Ltd. follows a clear-cut hierarchy. There is no direct
communication between the bottom level employees and
top level people. But, it needs to follow a clear- cut
hierarchy.

Cream Ltd. is as follow :-

by the Directors.
 For the executive level posts, generally, the placement
is done on the probation bases.
 For the higher level or key positions, the final
selection is done by the Directors after the interview
of the candidate taken by themselves.
 TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

After the placement and induction, the


training and development procedure is applied.

According to Micheal Armstrong,

“Training is the systematic modification of


behavior through learning which occurs as a result of
education, instruction, development and planned
experience.”

In Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. , Training and


development is an on-going process.
The Training and development programme of
Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. includes most of the prior
mentioned training activities.

The kind of training and development programme


offered by the company to its employees really helps in
their overall development. At the end of the training and
development programme, Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. also
takes employee feedback to measure the effectiveness of
this programme.

The company takes help of professional


training consultants for its training programme.

The company also offers vocational training


programme for the students where the students
themselves need to collect information and at the end of
the training period, the student trainee is supposed to
submit a project report to the company and gets the
training certificate from the company.

“Performance Appraisal is a
systematic, periodic and impartial rating of
employee’s excellence in matters pertaining to his
present job and to his potentialities for a better job.”

Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. includes periodic


performance Appraisal system.

In the company, the performance appraisal


is done on a regular basis.

Every Year, the self-appraisal forms are given


to the employees as a part of the company’s
performance appraisal procedure.

 PROMOTION SYSTEM IN THE COMPANY

In Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. , the


promotion of the employees is done on
both seniority and performance bases.

But, mostly, the promotion is given to


the employees on the bases of their overall
performance in the company.

 WAGES AND SALARY
ADMINISTRATION
In any company, wages and salary
administration is an important aspect of its overall
operation. Being a private ltd. company, No financial data
or figures has been made available in Havmor Ice Cream
Ltd.

But, in the company, the wages and salary


administration follows the government Norms.

The payment of wages to the factory workers


is done on both daily and monthly basis as per their being
of contractual or permanent workers. The payment of
wages is done as per the payment of wages Act and other
Government rules.

The payment of salary is done on monthly and


annual bases as per the position in the
company.

In the company, Bonus is also given to the


employees on festival or auspicious occasions.

 ALLOWANCES AND PERKS : -


In Havmor Ice Cream Ltd, all major types of
allowances and some perks are paid to the employees and
top level executives as listed below : -

Good industrial relations between the


workers and management are necessary for any
company for its sound running.
In Havmor Ice Cream Ltd., there are sound
industrial relations between workers and
management.

There is no trade union in the company and


so far the company has experienced no strikes or lock-
out situation.

The following health and safety measures


are applied in Havmor Ice Cream Ltd.

 Provision of non-slippery shoes, safety shower and


safety masks to the workers
 Provision of safety shower to the workers
 Provisions of fire-safety equipments and first-aid box.

MANAGEMENT : -
The public relations management system
of Havmor Ice Cream Ltd includes the following
things : -

 The public relations management system basically


works for maintaining good relations with public,
government, police etc.
 In this company, this responsibility is taken by Mr.
Tejas Parekh and Mr. Pranav Upadhyay.

In a general sense, Finance means money or


funds available to business enterprise. Finance is the
lifeblood of every business. Finance is required at every
stage ; to start business, to operate it and expand it ; so

o PRODUCTION PROCESS
CHART : -
 EXPLAINATION OF THE PRODUCTION PROCESS
CHART

 As shown in the chart , the process of making Havmor


Ice Cream first start with the help of milk tank where
the the milk to be used is stored; Such milk is stored
in the milk tank only after the proper Milk sampling
analysis where the things like acidity , Fat etc. are
analysed.

 After then , the milk is passed through the Dump tank


to milk pump where some pressure is inserted then it
passes through Milk Chiller in which the milk gets
cooled with the help of cold water circulation in the
Milk Chiller ; After then such chilled milk is sent to the
milk storage tank ; again the such stored milk is
passed through the Milk pump and again sent to the
milk chiller to again cool it.

 Such chilled milk is then passes through two Batch


Pasteurizers where the chilled milk is given heat at 75'
degree for around 15 to 20 minutes so that all the
germs can get removed and the milk become totally
pure and hygienic. After then the milk is again passed
through the milk pump where in between the
ingredients like sugar is added.

 Then, such mixture is passed through the


Homogenizer where 2500 kilo pound per square inch
pressure is given to the mixture so that the ice cream
can become smooth. The main function of the
Homogenizer is to smoothen the texture of ice cream.
After then such mixture is passed through the mix
chiller where at 4 to 6’ degree temperature the chilled
water circulation is done to make the mixture chilled.

 Then the whole mixture is sent to Three Aging Vat


where some mixture is sent to one flavor tank used
for the cone section in this flavor tank different
flavored colours and essence is added as per the
requirement , then this particular mixture quantity is
passed through the continuous freezer to keep it solid
and then this mixture is sent to the cone machine and
filled up in cones as per the different flavor added ,
then these ready cones are sent to the packing table
to get them packed and then sent to the hardening
tunnel and stored for 4 hours at - 35 to – 40 degree
temperature to make them hard and Finally they are
sent to the cold storage.
 As mentioned in the above paragraph some mixture
from the Aging Vat is used to make cones. Similarly
Some of the rest mixture from the Aging Vat is used
for producing cups and packs as follow : -

From the Aging Vat some mixture is sent


to another flavor tank where different flavored
colours and essence and dry fruits are added to
mixture as per the requirement and then this mixture
is passed to the continuous freezer to get and keep it
hardened then some mixture is sent to cup filling
machine in which this mixture is filled into cups and
the cups gets ready. Similarly the rest of the ice cream
is packed in to packs as per the requirement and then
sent to the hardening tunnel where it is kept for 4
hours at – 35 to – 40 degree temperature to get them
hardened and finally sent to the cold storage till
dispatched.

 As mentioned in the above two paragraphs some of


the mixture from the Aging Vat is used in making of
cups and packs and some other in making of cones
similarly the rest of the mixture from the Aging Vat is
used to make Candies as follow : -

From the Aging Vat, the rest of the


mixture is passed through the two Batch Freezers to
keep it solid , then it is passed through the I/C Vessel
and then sent to the candy tank to get the candies
ready as per the requirements then this candy shaped
contents is sent to the Candy Hardening Tunnel to
make it solid after then as per the requirement some
of these candies are sent to the chocolate coating
tank and finally packed and the rest flavored candies
are also sent to the packing table and then, these
ready candies are sent to the cold storage till finally
dispatched to – 25 to – 30 degree temperature A.C.
Vans.

 Some Other Details Regarding the Production


process and production department : -

 The main ingredient in making of Havmor Ice Cream is


Milk. Generally , daily 15000 to 20000 liters milk is
used in the production of Havmor Ice Creams
consumption is increased in pick season as per the
requirement. This milk is bought from the local
dairies.
 The company has its own private water supply facility
at the plant site.
 Daily around 50000 to 60000 units of variety of ice
creams are produced.
 There are around 200 variety of ice creams are
produced at Havmor Ice Cream Ltd.
 At the production plant, there is an online system
called DVR Centriform system through which
the live functioning and working of all the
departments at the production plant can be seen.
 At the production plant manual and automatic both
type of machines are used for production.
 The work is done in shifts as follow : -

o Daily shift time :- 8:00 a.m. to 8:00


p.m.
o Pick season shift time : - 8:00 a.m. to 12:00
p.m.

 The workers are given uniform, caps, non slippery


shoes and masks at the plant.

 There is also the arrangement for picnics and movie


shows is done to motivate the workers.

certified company for the manufacturing facilities.

The company has Research and Development


Department at the production plant which looks after
the quality control and management function.

Right from the starting point of inserting the


raw material to the ending point of the production
process, there is a strict adherence to the quality

Cream bowls with family packs or party packs to
attract the customers.

with some appeal and creativity which can

o The company can include some Lucky draw
contests as a part of its promotion strategy to
attract customers.

CONCLUSION
It has been a great experience of undergoing the
summer training programme at Havmor Ice Cream ltd.

On the basis of the study of the various aspects of


the company, the following things can be concluded : -

Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. is a highly professional and


successful company with excellent infrastructure facility,
using modern technology, efficient production, highly
professional human capital and efficient management.

It is the company with U.S.P. of 100 % ice creams


and having 35 % market share in Gujarat

The company has strengths like network, product


quality, market credibility, efficient production capacity,
brand awareness, good cold chain and distribution system.

It also has some weaknesses like vulnerability of


type of business, market range and adaptabilities to
change.

The project report consists of


recommendations/suggestions to overcome the
weaknesses.

The company is having future plans of expansion


at all India level and becoming 200 crore brand by 2010-
2011.
