7B - 2A - 3b ‘THE ENGINE ‘The components described in this text can be identified by reference to the Sectional Aerangement Drawing TB-BA in Section 8. The engine is a twin shaft unit and consists of two main sections; (a) the gas venerator and (b) the power turbine. ‘The gas generator: ree itp comprises the air inlet casing, compressor stator casing, scupressor turbine stator casing, centre casing, combustion chambers and rotor assembly. The power turbine comprises the power turbine stator assembly, exhaust cee yBetor assenbly and power turbine rotor assembly from which the Grive is transmitted to the gearbox and driven machinery via 2 gear type sleeve coupling. Air Inlet. Casing the air uplet casing assembly comprises an external casing approximately rectangular in shape and a circular internal casing aeech incorporates the compressor rotor front bearing housing and als0 Marries the twenty six radially disposed variable inlet guide vanes: This casing ie called the Bearing Support Member and is designed and Shaped t0 provide a smooth and uninterrupted path to the compressor for incoming air. qhe external casing comprises a top and bottom half. The two halves ine Gowelled and bolted together along their machined horizontal faces. The open end of the casing terminates in a rectangular cacrcned flange to which is bolted the air inlet ducting. The forward tad rear faces have machined annular flanges to which the bearing. anoport nenber 1s secured. A rubber sealing strip ensures an airtight joint. variable Inlet Guide Vanes ‘the engine is equipped with air inlet guide vanes, the angles of which are variable according to engine conditions. qhe vanes are moved to either one of two positions by an automatic seifecontained system comprising valves, cylinders and levers pnoumat ically operated by air pressure taken from the engine compressor. The initial position of the inlet guide vanes gives a reduced mass Sir Tow fo aid start conditions and engine handling up to approximately one third of full load. Page 1 of T TR 20 Upon the engine reaching approximately one third of full load, an air relay valve, actuated by air pressure taken from the compressor delivery stage, ("P2"), automatically operates a spool valve, allowing air from stage 10 of the compressor to enter a "Bellofram" cylinder, which in turn, through levers and linkage, moves the inlet guide vanes into their normal running position, giving maximum air mass flow to the gas generator, resulting in a reduced maxinum temperature (T.Max) at full load. Upon the engine load falling below approximately one third of full joad, the procedure is reversed and the inlet guide vanes revert. to their original engine starting position. Bearing Support Menber The bearing support member is manufactured in two halves which are machined and bolted together along their horizontal flanges. ‘Ten radially disposed support vanes join the forward and rear faces, which are secured by setscrevs to the front and rear flanges of the externa? casing. The support vanes are aerodynamically shaped and positioned, 80 that they offer the minimum of resistance to the air flow. Inlet Rearing Housing Assembly The inlet bearing housing is flanged at its forward end and secured by setscrews to the front flange of the bearing eupport member. Tt is split horizontally and machined to accept the thin wall journal bearing, the thrust bearing and piston ring type ofl seal. Lubrication is provided through drilled oilways. & smooth external finish and a Cairing over the top half of the bearing housing, forns the inner wall of the annular passage through which the incoming air flows on its way to the compressor. Compressor Stator Casing Assembly The compressor stator casing comprises a top and bottom half. ‘The tno halves are dowelled and bolted together along their horizontal flanges to form a single casing. It has machined flanges at either end and is belted at its forward face to the bearing support member. The rear end is spigotted and bolted to the centre casing. The stator casing carries twelve stages of stator blades and one stage of exit guide vanes; these are dovetailed into machined grooves and the blades are held in position by retaining blocks and countersunk head set screws, located in the top half of the casing. Stator stages numbers one and two contain thirty nine blades and thirty nine spacers in each stage, {.e. assembly is blade and spacer alternately, stages three to five inclusive each have fifty one blades and fifty one spacers, stages six to eight inclusive have sixty blades and stages nine to twelve and the single stage of exit guide vanes each contain sixty eight blades. All stages from six onward are assembled without spacers. The front flange 1s recessed raves et the spigotted rear end of the compressor stator casing and the sear flange is secured to the quadrant support casing. Flanges tejisistantly spaced around the forward face of the casting and 2° an SMgle to the engine axis, are machined to carry the four conbustion chanbers. ‘the votton half of the compressor centre bearing and labyrinth ses) Iecsing 1s integral with the bottom half of the centre casing and o} cee ne. Also located in the centre casing are the flame tube extensions and saee iecdrants, which conduct the hot gases from the flame tubes and direct, trem into the first stage of the compressor turbine. Quadrant Support Casing At their "exit" ends the Tour quadrants are connected together to form an annulus into which the sixty four first stage stator blades are fitted, thus forming the first stage stator quadrant assembly The stator quadrant assembly is attached to the quadrant support casing by means of twelve supports and pins, The supports and pine c2si0E ely spaced around the quadrant supports and so positioned that the quadrants are free to expand or contract when tenperature changes take place. the compressor turbine second stage stator ring assembly consists of stateon seguents which form an outer ring and are secured in positton Sy coneis, sixty four stator blades dovetailed into segments end ‘the Oy aoevcum which carrics the outer menber of the stator shroud seal and te ehich the inner ends or "platforms" of the stator blades are secured by parallel pins. The quasrant support casing is flanged and bolted at its forward foce ae ufe centre casing. It is secured by its rear flange to the front face of the interduct casing. Interduct Casing ‘the interduct casing Joins the gas generator section of the engine te the power turbine section. A ring, welded to the inner face OF the casing, form the outer skin of the duct which transfers the hot gases qeeathe compressor turbine outlet to the power turbine inlet. the sree ewin of the duct is formed by a ring secured to the front face of the power turbine diaphragm.
