11. (a) (i) A cylindrical shell 1m diameter and 3m length is subjected to an internal pressure
of 2Mpa. Calculate the maximum thickness if the stress should not exceed 50Mpa. Find
the change in diameter and volume of shell. Assume Poisson’s ratio of 0.3 and Young’s
modulus of 200 KN/mm2. (May-2014) (10Marks)

(ii) State the expression for maximum shear stress in a cylindrical shell (3Marks)

(b) (i) A hollow cylindrical drum 750 mm in diameter and 2.5 m long has a shell thickness of
10 mm. if the drum is subjected to an internal pressure of 2.6 N/mm 2.Determine 1. Change
in diameter 2. Change in length 3. Change in volume. Take E= 2.1x10 5 N/mm2 and
poisson’s ratio = 0.3 [Apr/May-2011] (10 Marks)

(ii) How many types of stresses are developed in thick cylinders? Name them. (3Marks)

12. (a)(i) A cylinder has an internal diameter of 230 mm, wall thickness 5 mm and is 1 m
long. It is found to change in internal volume by 12x10-6 m3 when filled with a liquid at a
pressure P. Taking E = 200GPa and poisson’s ratio = 0.25. Determine the stresses in the
cylinder, the change in its length and internal diameter. [APL/MAY-2008] (10Marks)

(ii) A Thin cylinder closed at both ends is subjected to an internal pressure of 2 MPa. It is
internal diameter is 1 m and the wall thickness is 10 mm. What is the maximum shear
stress in the cylinder material? (Apr/May -2008) (3 Marks)

(b) (i) A cylindrical shell of 1 m long 150 mm internal diameter having thickness of as 7 mm
is filled with fluid at atmosphere pressure. If additional 25 cc of fluid is pumped into the
cylinder, find the pressure exerted by the fluid on the cylinder shell and the resulting
hoop stress. Assume E = 2x105 N/mm2 and poisson’s ratio=0.25 (APR-12) (9 Marks)

(ii) Drive the expression of change in diameter for thin cylindrical shell subjected to internal
pressure (4 Marks)

13. (a) (i) A boiler shell is to be made of 15 mm thick plate having tensile stress of 120Mpa.
If the efficiencies of the longitudinal and circumferential joints are 70% and 30%
respectively, determine: (i) Maximum permissible diameter of the shell for an internal
pressure of 2Mpa (ii) Permissible intensity of internal pressure when the shell diameter is
1.5 m. (Nov/Dec-2013) (10 Marks)

internal pressure (3 Marks)

(b) (i) A thin cylindrical tube 80mm internal diameter and 5mm thick is closed at its ends. It
is subjected to an internal pressure of 6 N/mm 2 and a torque of 2009600 N-mm. Find the
hoop stress, longitudinal stress, maximum and minimum principle stresses and maximum
shear stress. (May 2014) (10 Marks)

(ii) A thin cylindrical shell has an internal dia of 250mm and thickness of 6mm. It is
subjected to an internal pressure of 3MN/mm2. Estimate the circumferential and longitudinal
stresses if the ends of the cylinder are closed. (3 Marks)

14. (a) Determine the maximum and minimum hoop stress across the section of a pipe of
400 mm internal diameter and 100 mm thick, when the pipe contains a fluid at a pressure
of 8 N/mm2. (10Marks)
Also sketch the radial pressure distribution and hoop stress distribution across the section
(3 Marks)

(b).(i) A steel cylinder o f 300 mm external diameter is to be shrunk to another steel


cylinder of 150 mm internal diameter. After shrinking the diameter at the junction is 250
mm and radial pressure at the common junction is 28 N/mm 2. Find the original difference in
radial at the junction. Take E - 2 x 105 N/mm2. (8Marks)

(ii) A thin cylinder is 3.5m long, 90cm in diameter and thickness of metal is 12mm and
it is subjected to an internal pressure 2.8 N/mm2.Calculate the change in dimensions
of the cylinders, maximum intensity of shear induced. E=200Gpa poisson's ratio is 0.3.

15. (a)(i) A thick spherical shell o f 200 mm internal diameter is subjected to an internal
fluid pressure of 7 N/mm2. I f the permissible tensile stress in the shell material is 8 N/mm 2;
find the thickness of the shell. (8 Marks)
(ii) A storage tank of internal diameter 280 mm is subjected to an internal pressure of 2.5
Mpa. Find the thickness of the tank, if the loop and longitudinal stresses are 75 Mpa and 45
Mpa respectively. (Nov/Dec-2008) (5 Marks)

(b) (i) A thick spherical shell o f 200 mm internal diameter is subjected to an internal fluid
pressure o f 7 N/mm2. I f the permissible tensile stress in the shell material is 8 N/mm 2, find
