Terms of Humidity
From Raoult’s & Dalton’s law: Ratio of vapor partial Volume occupied by humid
pressure to liquid vapor air per mass of dry air:
𝑀𝐻2𝑂 𝑃𝐻2𝑂
ℎ𝑎 = pressure in equilibrium at gas
𝑀𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑎𝑖𝑟 1 − 𝑃𝐻2𝑂
temperature; in percentage :
Saturation occurs when partial vH in m3/gram and T in Kelvin
pressure of the vapor is equal
to liquid vapor pressure at gas
temperature. Thus saturation
humidity: Percentage Humidity (hA)
vH in ft3/lb and T in Rankine
𝑀𝐻2𝑂 𝑃∗ 𝐻2𝑂 Ratio of actual humidity to Enthalpy of Saturated
ℎ𝑠 = saturation humidity; in
𝑀𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑎𝑖𝑟 1 − 𝑃∗ 𝐻2𝑂 Air / Total Enthalpy
percentage:
𝑃: partial pressure (in atm) Enthalphy of dry air plus the
𝑃′: liquid vapor pressure ℎ𝑎
ℎ𝐴 = 100𝑥 water vapor it contains at
𝑀: molecular mass ℎ𝑠 saturation.
Example 1
Humid air at 30oC has relative humidity of 30%. Determine:
a) Saturation humidity
b) Absolute humidity
c) Percentage humidity
d) humid volume
Assume M dry air = 28 kg/kmol

Terms of Temperature related to humidity measurements
Temperature as measured by
thermometer, thermocouple,
or other conventional
instruments.
