OBSERVE REAR WHEEL TREAD WIDTH

LIMITATIONS

CAUTION: For tractor stability, never operate

with single tires having lread width less than 60
in. (1520 mm).

IMPORTANT: Tires must have at least 1 in. (25 mm)

clearance with fenders (A). Distance be-
lween tires must be at least 42 in. (1070
mm), with tires equal distances from
center line (B).

To prevent interference ol draft links with

tires, when sway blocks are in upper
position (sway allowed), be sure distance
between tires is at least 46 in. (1 170 mm)
for Category 3 Hitch, or at least 43 in.
(1090 mm) lor Category 3N Hitch. Tires
should be equal distance from centerline
of tractor.

With dual tires, space between tires (C)

must be at least 4 in. (.100 mm). See Using
Radial Ply Tires, f or more information on
dual tire usage.

With single tires, do not exceed 110 in.

(2800 mm) between tires for pulling heavy
loads.

Pinion might be damaged if hub is tight-

ened at its very innermost position. Back
away trom end of rack at least 1/8 in (3
mm).

CHECK IMPLEMENT-TO.TIRE CLEARANCE

IMPORTANT: When large diameter rear tires, such as
18.4-42, 2O.A-38, 20.8-42, ot 23.1-34, are
installed on a tractor with 3-ooint hitch.
a quick coupler or similar device is re-
quired to provide adequate implement-
to-tire clearance. Check clearance be-
tween outside diamater of tire and
imolement.

USING RADIAL-PLY TIRES
When radial-ply tires are used as inner dual tjres (B), outer
tires may be bias-ply or radial ply tjres (A). Do not use a radial
lire as an outside dual when a bias ply tire is used as an inner
ouat.

Trre Industry's star rating system for radial tires is shown on

tire along with ply rating it replaces.
Example: 18.4 B 38. (Replaces 6 pty)
Radial ply tires and bias ply tires have ditferent load caoacitv
ratings and inflation pressures.

CHOOSING REAR TREAD WIDTH

Certain tire sizes are available with different wheel tvoes
which permits different tread ranges. Types of wheeli are
illustrated.

Tread adjustment is usually made with the rack and pinion.

but you may need to change rim position on wheels or
reverse wheels on axles to reach certain tread widths.

Tread is measured between centers of tires. #3p

CHANGING RIM POSITION ON WHEEL

Deep well rims have only two possible positions on wheels.

Wider side of rim can be turned to inside (A) or outside (B). I

CAUTION: To prevent iniury from tipping or

Be sure clamps engage rim driving lugs (A).

Tighten clamps evenly. Strike each bolt head (B) (inner side

USING LIOUID WEIGHT IN REAR TIRES I

CAUTION: Installing liquid ballast requires spe-

cial equipment and training. Have the iob done
by your John Deere dealer or a tire service store.

IMPORTANT: Cover rim completely with solution to

avoid corrosion, but NEVER fill any tire to
more than 90 per cent f ull. More solution
would leave too little air space to absorb
shocks. Damage to tire could occur.

A solution of water and calcium chloride provides sa{e,

economical ballast. Used properly, it will not damage tires,
tubes, or rims.

Use calcium chloride to prevent water from freezing. A

mixture oJ 3.5 lb. of calcium chloride per gal. (0.4 kg per L)
will not freeze solid above 50'F ( 45'C). Liquid Weight Per Tire

SELECTING FRONT TIRE ROLLING
DIRECTION

1 . Under most conditions, front tires should be mounted with

the direction of the tire lugs the same as the tire rollinq
direction.

2. lf tractor
is mainly used for loader operations, lug direction
may be reversed. Tire life may be increased by up to 30 per
cent and front traction improved in reverse.

SELECTING FRONT BALLAST

CAUTION: Additionat ballast may be needed tor
transporting heavy integral implements. When
implement is raised, drive slowly over rough
ground, regardless ot how much ballast is used.
Add weight to f ront end it needed tor stability on Non_lrlFWD
tractors or traction on N/FWD tractors. Heavy pulling and
heavy rear-mounted implements tend to lift tront wheels.
Add enough ballast to maintain steering control, prevent
I lip-over and provide traction.

USING LIQUID WEIGHT IN FRONT TIRES

CAUTION: Insta ing liquid ballast requires spe-

cial equipment and training. Have the job done

IMPORTANT: Cover rim completely with solution to

avoid corrosion, but never fill any tire

would leave too litfle air space to absorb
shocks. Damage to tire could occur.
