Barriers to Communication:

Communication is an extremely complex process and is, therefore rarely


perfect. The imperfections take place in the form of loss of meaning, and are
known as noise or distortion. The communication blocks occur due to three types
of barriers: psychological, semantic, and physical.

Psychological Barriers:

The psychological barriers are those which are involved with some human
psychology due to which it can become hurdle in the way of communication and
the communication can be distorted by the psychological barriers. So in order to
make the communication flow in a better way, the psychological barriers are
those like absence of mind, some fear during communication to a person who is
communicating with others, excitement, emotionally not stable. So these are the
factors which can influence the communication in the different ways

Psychological barriers include the following:

a. Emotional:

The emotional status of communicator as well as the audience effect


communication.

b. Perceptual:

People have different and complex personalities and backgrounds, and


therefore, they perceive messages from their own points of view.

Three types of perceptual barriers are:

. People perceive things differently,


. People fill-in information without checking accuracy,
. People perceive on the basis of their own experiences.

c. Selectivity:

The audience is not able to absorb all the information coming from a variety of
sources; so the audience picks up information selectively. The selectivity is
affected by timing, context and the degree of uniqueness of information.
