National Accounts
National accounts give a most comprehensive quantitative view of the eco-
nomic situation and development of a country, i.e. in this case Germany.
For doing so all units (persons, institutions) and economic activities are
part of the national accounts results. To make the picture more clear all the
units are aggregated to groupings like economic branches and sectors.
The national accounts results are published in a lot of detailed tables. This
small folder only shows a small part of the various national accounts
results.
A well known national accounts aggregate is the gross domestic product
(GDP). The GDP measures the domestic production of goods and services
minus the intermediate consumption of goods and services. Therefore it is
mainly an indicator for production.
The units which constitute the economy of a country and whose transac-
tions are recorded in the European System of Accounts (ESA 1995) are
those which have a centre of economic interest on the economic territory of
that country. These units, known as resident units, may or may not have the
nationality of that country, may or may not be legal entities, and may or may
not be present on the economic territory of the country at the time they
carry out a transaction. The meaning of the terms economic territory and
centre of economic interest are defined in the ESA 1995, too.
The ESA 1995 is an internationally compatible accounting framework for a
systematic and detailed description of a total economy, its components
and its relations with other economies. The ESA 1995 is fully consistent
with the revised world-wide guidelines on national accounts, the System of
National Accounts (SNA 1993). These guidelines have been produced under
the joint responsibility of the United Nations, the IMF, the Commission of
the European Communities, the OECD and the World Bank. Thus
comparative harmonized data exists throughout Europe to enable political
and economical decisions. Within the EU, for example, data on the gross
national income (GNI) is used to calculate countries’ own resources.
1) Change on the same quarter of the preceding year in %. – 2) Results of the labour force
