Now our topic for today is about


Reading short stories. So, first we will
define first what is short stories? A
story with a fully developed theme but
significantly shorter and less elaborate
than a novel. Short story is a short
work of fiction. Fiction is prose
writing about imagined events and
characters. Prose writing differs from
poetry in that it does not rely on
verses, meters, or rhymes. For it’s
organization and presentation. Short
story is shorter than a novel and
usually deals with only a few
characters.

Now let us proceed to the elements of


a short story. What are those?

1. Setting- the time and location in


which a story takes place is called
setting.

a. Place- geographical/ physical


location.
b. Time- time when the story is
taking place.
c. Weather condition- is it rainy,
sunny, stormy etc?
d. Social condition- the daily life
of other characters contain local
color.

2. Plot- how the author arranges


events to develop his basic idea.

a. Introduction- the beginning of


the story where the characters
and setting are revealed.
b. Rising action- this is where the
events in the story become
complicated and the conflict in
the story is revealed.
c. Climax- this is the highest
point of interest and turning
point of the story.
d. Falling action- the events and
complications begin to be
resolved.
e. Denouement- this is the final
outcome or unraveling of the
events in the story.
3. Conflict- it is the struggle that
characters hate to contend with.
-it is any form of opposition that
faces the main character.

a. Types of conflicts include:

-man vs man ( physical)

-man vs circumstances
(classical)

-man vs society ( social)


-man vs himself/herself (
psychological)

4. Characters- the person in the story


and their characteristics, their
physical appearance, what they say
and think etc.

a. Protagonist- one who undergoes


change or learns something during
the course of the story.

b. Antagonist- the one who


contends with the protagonist

5. Point of view- point of view is


defined as the angle from which
the story is told.

6. Theme- in a piece of fiction is its


controlling idea or its central
insight. It is the author’s
underlying meaning or main idea
that he is trying to convey.
