When someone uses persuasive writing, it it usually very effective.

These text do this to

show how and why their purpose should be heard and why it is needed. The texts I am using is,
King’s letter from Birmingham Jail, Malala’s speech, and Julia alvarez's story. They all have a
purpose to prove and they use rhetoric to advance their purpose. My purpose now is to show
who made the best clarification in their explanation and who used the based rhetoric examples
for their purpose. Before anything, I believe that King’s letter had the best uses of rhetoric.

King gives many reasons why he needs to be out of jail, protesting. In his letter, he
says, "I say it as a minister of the gospel, who loves the church...". What he means by this is
that he respects the church, and he stands with them. King shows that he is in the same
position as the clergyman with the church so why should he be excluded if he isn't different.
King tries to get to the clergyman with emotion too. He says, "In spite of my shattered dreams,
of the past, I came to Birmingham with the hope that the white religious leadership of this
community would see the justice of our cause...". By saying this he tries to get others to
understand his pain. He hoped with all of his heart that by coming to Birmingham, he would get
so much more support. They failed him and he shows it. Before King was arrested he explained
that "I am meeting young people every day whose disappointment with the church has risen to
outright disgust. This is the only logical thing to happen. The church has failed many people.
They tried to get support but the church turned a blind eye. The church may expect respect from
people, but if the church practically gives up on an entire group of individuals, the reputation of
the church may be severely damaged. This story used great rhetoric because he uses his own
experience, others, and even appeals to emotion.

The point of this story is that Alvarez wants to persuade her audience to speak up for
injustice. At the beginning of the text, there was a lot of injustice. One instance from the text
was, “Thousands had lost their lives in failed attempts to return the country to democracy.” This
will advance the purpose because she shows what is going on. Just because of people wanting
it to change, they were killed. Later on, she goes to describe her mother’s march. The march
was important but dangerous. If her mother did not march her cedula would not be stamped. In
the text, it says " The parade went on for hours in the hot sun until my mother was sure she was
going to faint". This shows why you should speak up because this is torturing people. Forcing
someone to walk for hours in the heat is terrible. You also wouldn’t be able to get a passport if
you didn’t march. They are being forced to honor people that do not deserve the honor. Later on
in the text, Alvarez wants to speak up. She does this by writing novels. I thought this story was
weaker because she didn’t experience enough herself. Most of what she says is her mom’s
story, not hers

Malala wants to help education for all women and children. She gives many examples in
her speech of why she wants to help and why you should listen. In the first part of her speech
Malala thanks many people. She says "thank you to all of them". When she says this she refers
to all of her supporters and caretakers when she needed help. This piece of evidence falls into
the Ethos category of Rhetoric. This is because she doesn't take anything for granted and she
appreciates all the help given. The reason this furthers her purpose is that she shows that she is
a reliable person to listen to because she already has so many supporters. She also gives an
example of her own experience. Malala says "Dear friends, on 9 October 2012, the Taliban shot
me on the left side of my forehead." This will go under the Pathos category because this
develops a sense of sympathy. People will want to help her because of what she went through.
This furthers her purpose because people will realize that this doesn't just happen to Malala, this
happens to so many other woman and children because of their need for education. Malala then
goes on to explain why they shot her. She says "They thought the bullets will silence us but they
failed." She says this because the Taliban didn't have the power to stop them which falls into
Logos. Her purpose is supported by this because she shows that guns can't stop education.
Education will live on with the help of others. This story was good because she gave her own
experience and others. The only reason this was not on top is because there was not that much
compared to king.

I think king’s letter was the best. He used he best rhetoric, the most of it, and had valid
evidence to prove it. He had the most effective writing. Malala and Julia gave great examples
but they weren’t as solid as King’s.
