NPCIL-SIMPLEX BOUNDARY WORKS-SLIPPAGE

Synopsis:

As is requested by NPCIL, we are furnishing the slippage related design of precast

hollowcore slabs. The following design calculations are performed considering the losses
caused due to 12 mm of slippage. It may be noted that the stresses are under permissible
values as is seen in the following report.

Design Indents:

Characteristic Strength of concrete at 28 days 60 N/mm2

Strength of concrete at de-stressing 25 N/mm2

Design Inputs:

1. Diameter of stressing jack piston area: 43.3 cm2

2. Stressing length of strand: l=134.85m=134850mm
3. Type of strand: 9.5mm dia. Class II, LRPC strands conforming to IS 14268:1995.
4. Cross section area of strand: Ap=54.8mm2
5. Modulus of elasticity of strand: E= 195,000 MPa
6. Stress applied: 70% of 1867 MPa = σ=1307 MPa

Calculation of strand elongation:

Stressing force per wire= 𝑃𝑓 = 1307 × 54.8 = 71624𝑁 = 72 𝑘𝑁

With reference to the stressing force chart supplied by Paul:

For a stressing force of 72 kN, the corresponding pressure value in “bars” considering the
internal friction losses of jack = 181 bars

(Please refer to the chart on next page)

Apply initial prestress of 40 bars to straighten the wires. With reference to the stressing
force chart, the required initial prestress force is Pstr=14.5kN.

Calculation of gross theoretical elongation of strands:

𝜎 1307
Strain in strands= 𝜖 = 𝐸 = 195000 = 0.006702564

Gross theoretical elongation = 𝜖 × 𝑙 = 0.006702564 × 134850 = 904𝑚𝑚______𝐴

Calculation of strand elongation with reference to initial prestress:

𝑃𝑓−𝑃𝑠𝑡𝑟 (72−14.5)×103
∆𝑙 = ×𝑙 = × 134850 = 726𝑚𝑚_______B
𝐴𝑝×𝐸 54.8 ×195000

The above mentioned value B shall be the elongation submitted to production department.
Please refer to the design drawing at the end of this sheet.

Check for slippage:

Considering a slippage value of 6mm at each end of the 5810 mm long hollow core slab.

Therefore the total slippage per slab = 6+6=12mm

12
Therefore the strain per slab = 𝜖 = 5810 = 0.002065404

The slippage occurs at cutting of slabs. The minimum concrete strength at cutting of slabs =
30MPa

Therefore the modulus of elasticity of concrete= 5000√25 = 25000 𝑀𝑃𝑎

Therefore stress loss due to slippage=0.002065404 × 25000 = 51.64 𝑀𝑃𝑎

51.64
Percentage stress loss= 1307 = 0.0395 = 4%

Considering the above mentioned percentage loss due to slippage and redesigning the
hollowcore slabs.

Please find on the following sheets detailed design calculations and design drawing.
