Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

It is imperative that students have an assortment of school-related

activities they can participate in, educational and recreational. Most popularly,

these types of activities include intramurals, pageant, CSANPRISA, poster

making, quiz bee contest, essay writing contest, buwan ng wika, nutrition month,

united nation, educational tour, etc.

Students also can have their interests expanded by participating in

activities. These activities could consist of anything, such as joining the school's

debate team and the chess team. Wagner (1999) found out that Co curricular

activities encourage personal accomplishments and the development of

interpersonal skills. Adolescents who participate in these activities have

opportunities to assume meaningful roles and responsibilities. The sense of

efficacy student’s gain from these experiences can be an important protective

factor for those growing up under adverse circumstances.

The main purpose of this study is to know the level of enjoyment among

Grade 11 Learners in activities of St. Margaret School that will help to improve

the existing and upcoming school activities.

Theoretical Framework

Alexander Astin's Theory of Involvement (1984) including classroom, out-of-

classroom, and curricular activities. Astin defined involvement as an investment of physical

and psychological energy that occurs along a continuum and has both quantitative (e.g.,

time spent) and qualitative (e.g., amount of focus or depth) features. Astin described an

involved student as one who “devotes considerable energy to studying, spends much time

on campus, participates actively in student organizations, and interacts frequently with

faculty members and other students” (p. 518). It explains empirical knowledge about

environmental influences on student development from a variety of psychosocial and

learning pedagogies.

Statement of the Problem

The objective of this study is to identify the Level of Enjoyment among

Senior High School learners who participate in activities of St. Margaret School.

This study sought to answer the following question.

1. What is the level of enjoyment of the respondents on school activities?

2. How the respondents express their willingness to continue participate on

school activities?

3. How does the school activities helps the respondents to be more competitive

learners?

4. How does the school activities enhanced learner’s skills/talents?

Significance of the Study

The results of this study will be of great benefit to the following:

Learners. The results will provide the learner’s advance enjoyment for upcoming

enhanced school activities and programs. It will give the learners a realization

that these activities are useful to practice the core values of St. Margaret School.

Parents. The parents would be able to understand why their children participate

on these school activities as a part of their enjoyment. The given data would

motivate them to give more support for their children and learn how to handle

them on these such activities.

Teachers. The given data would guide the teachers what to do with the learner’s

expectations in school activities.

School Administrators. Help them to create more enhanced school activities for

learners.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study limits to 30 learners of Grade 11 who participate in school

activities from June to November 2018 of St. Margaret School.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are used in this study:

Academic Performance. Describes how well you perform in school.

Co-curricular activities. Activities take place outside the classroom but

reinforce or supplement classroom curriculum in some way.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The following are review of literature related to Senior High School Learner’s

Level of Enjoyment in Activities of Saint Margaret School.

According to Brown, M.D., (2000), “Because of the pride they achieve,

they gain better self respect, self esteem, and self confidence.” Every moment

that students accomplish their goals, they develop their positive attitude and

characteristics as a part of their achievements. Every participation on school

activities make the learners more active in school and helps them to show more

skills that they have. They will be more likely to focus on educational and

benefited priorities than focusing to a non-sense habits.

Holland & Andre (1987) found that “The developmental perspective

considers extracurricular activities necessary to the total development of the

student in today's schools.” School activities is a big part of the learner’s proper

development and improvement. New environment is a new learning. Just like in

St. Margaret School, every month were having different activities and programs,

to prove and to boost learner’s abilities and learnings.

Marsh (1992) stated that “According to different theoretical perspectives,

extracurricular activity participation may be posited to a divert attention from

academic pursuits, as evidenced by its negative effects on narrowly defined

academic goals.” Time and concentration for academic works will diminished if

the students are much focusing on school activities. It results a negative impact

if the learners have more achievements from school activities, but their

academic performances changed in a not good result.

Wang and Shively (2009) stated that “However, many also believe that

these activities may actually affect student performance in a negative manner

due to conflicting time requirements and competing schedules, even if they do in

face enhance student persistence.” Participating in school activities have both

negative and positive impact to students. School activities are one of their

motivation to attend school regularly, but still there are possible situations that

they will be having a problem on their time management because they

complying the requirements in different field at the same time.

Synthesis

Every moment that the students accomplish their goals, they develop

their positive attitude and characteristics as a part of their achievements. Every

participation in school activities make the students more active in school and help

them to show more skills that they have. They will be more likely to focus in

educational and benefited priorities than focusing to a non-sense habits. School

activities are part of their proper development and improvement. Parents,

teachers, and mentors are the persons who are responsible to take care and stay

them away from bad influences by guiding them the right etiquette. Students

contribute success to their family and community, specially in school where they

study.

Time and concentration for academic works will diminished if the students

are much focusing in school activities. It results a negative impact if the students

have the high achievements from activities, but their academic performances

changed in a not good result. It showed that the students who participated in

school activities had higher grades, higher academic aspirations, and better

academic attitudes than those who were not involved in school activities at all. It

can also add help for college students wherein they will benefit in getting

scholarship plus monthly allowance.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study used descriptive research design to describe characteristics of

a population or phenomenon being studied. The characteristics used to describe

the situation or population are usually some kind of categorical scheme also

known as descriptive categories. The description is used

for frequencies, averages and other statistical calculations. Often the best

approach, prior to writing descriptive research, is to conduct a survey

investigation.

Research Locale

The study was conducted in St. Margaret School, City of San Jose Del

Monte Inc. CSJDM, Bulacan during the Second emester of School Year 2018-

2019.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study were the chosen 30 Grade 11 Learners who

were currently enrolled in General Academic Strand of Saint Margaret School

this School Year 2018-2019.

Research Instrument

The researchers used self-made questionnaire as the data collection

instrument for this study. The chosen 30 respondents from Grade 11 were

surveyed. The survey questions is a numerical analysis of data collection using

computational techniques. Questions relating to the experiences of the learners

that could be adopted to enhance school activities.

Data Gathering Procedure

Researcher were provided the numerical survey questionnaire. The

participants were able to answer the questions depending on their experiences

and satisfaction. After answering the questionnaires, the researchers computed

the frequency of their answers to the questionnaires. The value each respondent

got, defines their level of enjoyment in school activities.

Data Analysis

Out of 10 school activities, the highest score with the mean of 3.10 is the

off-campus activity which is the educational tour that they enjoyed most.
