A project baseline is prepared in the start of the project depending upon the realistic

time duration and logical sequencing of the activities, which shows the start and finish dates

of the work. An update on set time intervals (usually weekly or monthly) is prepared in

terms of PROGRESS measured on selected criterion. The progress planned in baseline and

actual progress worked out is compared, also the project delay in critical path is

investigated. If required crashed schedule is formed (without touching sequence only

durations decreased with increased resources). It is often considered perplex to set the

parameter for measurement of progress some time. However, two major methods are used

as under,

2. Progress in terms of time measurements

1.Ê Progress in terms of tangible payable items (like for construction concrete,

excavation etc.) often termed as ´physical progressµ. Normally due to complexity

of measuring quantities and their part in overall project, earned value concept is

used in which at the start of the project a payment schedule is formed, showing

realistic price as in the over all project. And the progress is measured in financial

achievements of the project.

Earned value is measured on the basis of the bill that contractor claim to client e.g., if

as per site engineer and contractor agreement they have made a progress of 100 $ for

concrete, the overall cost of concrete in project is 200$ they have achieved 50% of the activity.

The project cost is 500$ then they have achieved 20% of the project completion.
