HEC-RAS 5.0.

1 Step by Step guide

1. Open HEC-RAS 5.0.1 , main window will appear as shown in fig below

Main window

2. Making a New Project

Make a new project by clicking on file > new project, give path where you wish to save the
project and give project title and click OK
3. Go to GIS tool in main window and click on RAS mapper ,RAS mapper window will get open

4. Right click on terrain and click on create a new terrain. A window will appear regarding
projection, click on no, as we will be assigning projection directly from the DEM file
projections. after clicking on no below window will appear.
5. Click on add button symbol select DEM file from folder DEM_Godavari. A window will
appear asking for spatial reference projection. click on yes now your project has a spatial
reference same as DEM file.
6. Click on create on new terrain layer window. It will start creating a window ,wait for a while

7. Once terrain is created click on close button , now go to RAS Mapper you will find terrain file
created under Terrains tree. Right click on file and click on zoom to layer. The terrain of the
study will be seen in the ras mapper window as shown in fig below.
8. Go to main window click on edit > Geometry Data and geometry data window will open as
shown in fig below where you will find terrain.

9. Digitizing 2D polygon area

Click on 2D flow area in the tool bar (Horizontal ). And digitize the polygon as shown in fig below.
Note . make line perpendicular to river and complete the polygon by double clicking next to the
starting point, give name to polygon as 2d flow area and click on ok . Your 2d flow area should
look similar to the fig given below. Make sure it should cover the floodplains.

2D POLYGON (BLUE LINE)

10. Creating mesh for 2D flow area

Go to 2D flow area in Editor toolbar (vertical bar) click on generate computation points on regular
interval with all breaklines then give spacing DX and DY as 30 and 30 m respectively click on
Generate points in 2d flow area and click on ok.

11. Now, 2D mesh has created see fig below

12. Fixing boundary condition

Click on SA/ 2D BC line in geometry tools Go to upstream side and draw a line equal
to the river width (overlapping to the 2d polygon) and double click for ending, give boundary
condition name as Upstream_BC and click on ok . BC line is shown in fig below. Similarly
follow the same procedure for downstream BC.
13 Saving geometry data

In geometry data window Go to file > save geometry data. Give title as geometry data and click Ok.
Now your geometry data is saved and it is highlighted in the main window

14 Unsteady flow data input

In main window go to the edit>unsteady flow data click on upstream BC and then click on flow
hydrograph ,enter the fix start time date and time ,date time interval, discharge values as shown in
fig below and click ok . Similarly click on downstream BC then click on normal depth and give value
0.000615. After entering values click ok. Go to file save unsteady flow data by fiving name unsteady
flow data.
15 Once unsteady flow data is saved, then come to main window go to run > unsteady flow
analysis fill the data as shown in fig below save the plan( file> save plan) give plan id - plan01

Enter short id P-1 directly

Further before computing, go to option > calculation options and tolerance > go to 2d tab

Select full momentum eq and enter values 10 for initial condition. Click ok

Then come to unsteady flow analysis window and click on compute, your setup model will
start computing .wait till the computation is successfully completed.
16. View the results in the RAS Mapper

In main window go to GIS tools > RAS mapper

You can start the animations and see the temporal inundation extend
