EMIISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS ~U.S,.A. ONLY)

The u.s. e:nvlronmen1al Protection Agency and California Air Resources BO.<'I,rd (CARB~ require rnanulacuuers to certify that their motorcycles comply with appllcabte axhaust emissions sti'lndarrds during their useful life, when operated and maintained accoral ng 1:0 the instructlons pi ovided, and that motorcycles built after J.anual:ry 1, 19,83 complv wuth app~;C3ble nolse emlsslon standards for one ye.ar 0T B,.OOO km [,3,730 miles) after the time of sale to the uttimate purchaser, when operated and maintained <lc:c.nr-ding to the instructions provided. SOIURCE OF EMISSIONS

The combustion prOC'9SS produces carbon monoxide Clmi hvdrocerhorrs. Controlling IhydrOC'iI,rbon emissions is very ~mpor tant because, under certain conditions, ~heV react to form phctocbarnicat smog when subjected to sunlight. Carbon monoxide does not react in the same way, but it is toxic ..

Honda Motor Co .. Ltd. utilizes lean carburetor settings ~'S well 8S other systems, to reduce carbon monoxide' l'l • .nd hydrocarbons.

CRANKCASE EMIS·SION CONTROL SYST'EM

The ,engdne is equipped with a closed crankcase syst.em to prevent discharging crankc~rse emissions .into the atmosphere. Blow-by gas is returned !1 the combustion chamber through the air claaner and carburetor.

GENERAL INFORMATION

EXHAUST EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM IPUlSE SECO'NDA.RY AJR INJE:CTION SYS'IlEMI

The exhaust emission control system incorporates a lean cerburetor setting and! no adjustment should be madeexcept idle speed by using the-throttle SlOP screw.

(CAUfORNIA DNIL'V)

The exhaust emtssion control system consists off a secoriderv air suppl.y system which introduces filtered alr into the exhalJst gases lnthe exhaust pert, Fresh air ~6 drawn lnte the exhaust port whenever there is a ne.gstive pressure pulse in [he exl,au~1 sy~ll;lm. This dl,,:rg!;! !,II fr!;!!;>!1 air promotes burninq or ~~H, unburned Hxll;i!us! ~F~s~s and chanqss a considerable amount of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide into rei, atively harmless carbon dioxide and water vapor.

This model has the pulse secondary air i!"ljectiGfl (PAm) control valve; it consists of check valves built into the pulse MC ondarv air injection !PAIR) control valve .. A Dulse sccendarv air lnjeetlon (pAIR I checif{ valve prevents reverse air flow through the system.
