GAUGE
EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL TO THIS PROJECT.

STITCH EXPLANATION
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between
needles and placing it onto the left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back
loop – 1 st increased.
Yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric,
worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right hand needle. This creates the new st. You
are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

NOTES
1. Wrap is worked in one piece, back and forth in rows.
2. A circular needle is used to accommodate the number of stitches. Work
back and forth on the circular needle as if working on straight needles.
3. Crochet embellishment is added to the lower edges of the Poncho after
knitting is complete.

With A, cast on 50.

Row 1: P30, place marker for shoulder, p to end of row.

Row 2 (RS): *K1, yo; repeat from * to last st, k1.
Row 3 (WS): Purl all stitches, dropping all yos.

Rep Rows 2 and 3 until piece measures about 20 in. (51 cm) from beginning, end
with a WS row as the last row you work.

Begin Front Neck Shaping

Next Row (RS): *K1, yo; rep from * to 2 sts before marker, k2, leaving 30 sts
unworked.
Next Row (WS): Turn work, p2tog, p to end of row, dropping all yos – 19 sts.

Rep last 2 rows one more time – 18 sts.

Next Row (RS): *K1, yo; repeat from * to last st, k1.
Next Row (WS): Purl all sts, dropping all yos.

Rep last 2 rows for an additional 6 in. (15 cm), ending with a WS row.

Next Increase Row (RS): *K1, yo; repeat to last st, M1, k1 – 19 sts.
Next Row (WS): Purl all sts, dropping all yos.

Rep Increase Row one more time – 20 sts.

Place sts onto a st holder.

Begin Back Neck Shaping

Rejoin yarn to remaining 30 sts, ready to work a RS row.
Next Row (RS): *K1, yo; repeat from * to last st, k1.
Next Row (WS): Purl all sts, dropping all yos.

Rep last two rows until Back Neck measures same length as Front Neck ending
with a RS row as the last row you work.

Joining Row (WS): Purl all Back Neck sts, dropping all yos, continuing across
Front Neck sts on holder, dropping all yos – 50 sts.

Next Row (RS): *K1, yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
Next Row (WS): Purl all sts, dropping all yos.

Rep last 2 rows for about 6 in. (15 cm), ending with a RS row as the last row you

across, dropping all yos – 30 sts.
Next Row (RS): *K1, yo; rep from * across to last st, k1.

Next Decrease Row (WS): K2tog, purl across all sts, dropping all yos – 29 sts.

Rep last 4 rows 2 more times – 27 sts.

Next Decrease Row (RS): K2tog, *k1, yo; rep from * across to last st, k1 – 26
sts.
Next Decrease Row (WS): K2tog, purl all sts, dropping all yos – 25 sts.

Rep last 2 rows 9 more times – 7 sts remain.

Bind off.

FINISHING
Stripe Embellishment
With Front RS facing, 2 strands of yarn B held together, and crochet hook, draw
up a loop about at 2 in. (5 cm) from lower edge. Work a slightly uneven row of
half double crochet across piece.
Fasten off and cut yarn.

Rep for 2 more rows, about 2 in. (5 cm) from previous row of half double crochet.

With Back RS facing, rep 3 rows of half double crochet as previously done for
Front of Poncho.

Weave in ends.

With sewing needle and thread, sew large decorative button on upper left of neck
edge, or as desired.
