Representing Nature’s Mobility by Blobitecture - SEM:- 8 YEAR:- 4

Sub Title –
Ship Terminal and Travelers Shelter at Coast of Port Blair, Andaman Nicobar

Background –
Blobitecture is a derivation of the word blob form in architecture. It illustrates interesting architectural
movement. It is a kind of mixture of organic and fluidic architecture, which is free from which represents movement of
water.

Andaman Nicobar is the most diverse ecological area in India. The island’s costal area is mostly covered with the
mangroves trees and is safe guarded by the ecological department. The most active port of the state is in Blair, but the
port of Blair doesn’t provide passenger waiting hall at the mainland ports is a frustrating problem. The passengers
should run from one place to another to take shelter when there it’s raining. There’s no space to provide proper security
and safety for their belongings. The travelers when landed the port; doesn’t get the shelter. For getting shelter they
need to travel about 3 km.

Normally ship terminal is a structure which is used as a drop up and pick up terminal for passenger travelling
through ship. But in city like port Blair where there is less entertainment and leisure area and also the time gap between
ship’s arrival and departure is more, ship terminal should provide all kind of facilities to the passenger such as multiplex,
shopping center, game zone and many other.

Problem Statement –
Andaman Nicobar is a place where there is many tourist place and even tourism are planned for it. There is also
foreign company in which the client may come to the office for the meeting. So it is place where the tourist and business
man use to visit regularly in a month. But there is no proper port facility where they can arrive and take a hold for rest
and refreshment. And also there’s no place near by the port to get shelter and wait for the ship to arrive. So there is
need for the ship terminal which consists of commercial, multiplex, multipurpose areas and areas for refreshment.

Aim –
To design ship terminal and travelers shelter by representing nature’s mobility by blobitecture

Objective –
To accomplish the aim following objective are needed to be considered:-

- To collect the data of the number of tourists which travel through the ship.
- To find the material which is easily malleable and can sustain the water flow.
- To conduct the research of Blobitecture with respect to the building.
- To study the digital tools which are essential to design blob structure.
Design Project –
This project will aim to provide a ship terminal with entertainment and leisure area which will help the travelers
to get relax and entertain them till the ship arrives. It will also aim to provide the shelter above the water near the
terminal which will help them to stay near the terminal and explore the coastal region of Port Blair.

Methodology –
- To conduct the case study of the building which represents blobitecture.

- To conduct the case study of multifunctional ship terminal.

- To conduct the case study of shelter which floats on water.

- To combine all the case study and implementing it into the design.

Identified Case Study –

- Marine Gateway in Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung. By – Artech Architects
- Kaohsiung Port and Cruise Service. By – HMC Architects
- The Sage Gateshead in Gateshead, England. By – Foster + Partners.
- Mumbai International Cruise Terminal.

Scope and Limitation –

Main problem which will be faced during the thesis is the selection and availability of the material as the Port
Blair receives minimal rise of water level during the rainfall and as the construction is to be done near the coastal region
the selection of the material according to the building form will be an issue. The other problem will be of economy as
the government of Andaman Nicobar is not investing in the development of the terminal; but it can be solve by realizing
them about the tourist growth which will directly increase the economy growth.
