Art Critiquing: Cubism

This painting is the “Woman with a Guitar” by Georges Braque. It is

painted at 1913 using oil and charcoal in the art style of cubism. A woman
is shown with a guitar and at the bottom of the painting there seems to
be letters and printed texts. The color of this painting is muted hues of
grey and brownish-yellow. The lines form different squares that are used
to portray the woman with a guiitar. The proportions of the squares and
lines are different from each other because of their sizes. There is balance
between the different squares and their sizes and placements. There is
also a variety of lines which are painted in different slopes and lengths
and variety of squares because their sizes are different from each other.
The emphasis on the guita is shown using a different color and strings
were given and a feminine mouth and eyes was shown to also give emphasis to the
woman. The muted colors gives me a calm feeling. The closed eyes and smiling mouth of
the woman indicates she feels at rest and her mind is clear of problems. The guitar also
supports the overall calming mood of the image because guitar means that there is
music and music calms people. The painting is successful because the woman and the
guitar was creatively incorparated in this art style. The elements also create a sense of
calmness and peace. This image truly is a great example of cubism because of its shapes
and lines that are used to portray the subject of the image.
