1. Warm up activities:
I start the class with a warm up activity. I will hand out the survey worksheet and
explain to the students that they will fill out the section labeled “me” for themselves,
and interview two other students using the “how often do you…” question format. Once
the students have finished the survey, we will choose some students to present some
of their results.
2. Share the objectives
Today we will talk about adverbs of frequency and frequency expressions.
3. Language practice (3-4 exercises that move from controlled to free / simple to
complex)
We read a short interview on page 87 to reinforce the adverbs of frequency and the
frequency expressions. First we will ask the students some initial questions based on
the information that Yuniko is a Japanese teenager. We will have them use the
grammar points to imagine what a day in the life of Yuniko is like. Then we will have
them read the interview, paying special attention to the adverbs and frequency
expressions that are underlined, and in which order they appear in the sentence.
Afterwards they will answer the questions that follow the interview.
4. Task execution (controlled to free / simple to complex)
The task will be to have the students write three sentences, two true and one false.
They will have to use either adverbs of frequency or frequency expressions in each
sentence. I will give an example of our own three sentences, and have the students
guess which sentence is false. Once the students have finished their sentences, we
will select students to present their sentences to the class, and the other students will
have to guess which sentence is false.
5. Assessment
I assess the students through the various activities. I can see how well they understand
the basics through the controlled exercises. By going around the room and
checking/helping while they are writing and working on the various activities I can
assess the level of comprehension. The students creating their own sentences and
presenting to the class will be the final assessment, and will give us an accurate idea
of how many students fully comprehend the subject matter.
Conversation Club:
We are doing a conversation club every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during the break
period. We have selected two students from each course to participate in the club. In the club,
we do dynamic activities to encourage the students to speak in English. We listen to songs,
watch presentations, and develop dramas to facilitate our discussions. The classes are very
interactive, with a mix of students who have varying English levels. The idea is that the higher
level students will help lead the conversations, and the other students who are enthusiastic but
have a lower level of English, will be able to improve their confidence in conversation. At the
end of the year, each of the groups will present a project that we are working on during the
morning assembly.
