What are the methods used of enhancing/decorating finished products?
D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #1
There are many ways or method use on how to decorate finished products. Finishing materials
are commonly used in decorating wood, bamboo, and metal products. Some are listed below:
1. Fillers – these are applied on wood to fill up cracks, holes, and grooves. There are two kinds of
wood fillers:
a. Paste filler – It comes from silex, raw linseed oil, and turpentine. It has colours such as
natural, red, or golden oak.
b. Shellac – this is a kind of varnish that dries up easily and is not waterproof. It comes from
lac gum diluted in alcohol. Shellac is available in white or orange colour. White paste
fillers are used to fill in big cracks and grooves or wood.
2. Stains – The common wood stains used are oil stain, water stain, and spirit stain which are
named after the solvent used. Stains are sold in different colours and shades. The
easiest to apply on wood is oil stain. The hardest one to apply is the spirit stain because
it dries up easily.
3. Paint – A finishing material most commonly used on wood. Paint prevents moisture on the
wood which causes decay. Paint beautifies wooden objects and makes them easy to
clean.
4. Varnish – This is a transparent finishing material that comes from gum, linseed oil, and resin. It
is hard and shiny when dry and gives sheen to the wooden project. Varnish is widely
used in furniture and upholstery making.
5. Enamel – this is kind of varnish with colour. Powdered colour pigments are mixed with the
varnish. it is used on wood that is not exposed to the sun or rain because it easily fades.
There are two kinds of enamel, gloss and non-gloss. Gloss enamel gives sheen and has
an attractive effect on wood. Non-gloss enamel does not give any sheen, but it
beautifies wood.
6. Lacquer – is another kind of varnish made of melted cotton tinters, gum, or chemicals. Like
enamel, lacquer comes in different colours.
Let the pupils identify the different finishing materials used in finished products.

Why is it important to use finishing materials in finished products?

IV. PROCEDURES:
A. Review
Give example of activities to determine market trends of finished products.
B. Establishing Purpose of the Lesson
Our country has vast natural resources where useful products are derived. The different kind of
finishing materials like varnish, paint, lacquer, enamel shellac and many more had their sources.
In this lesson we are going to discuss the sources of finishing materials, accessories and designs.
C. Presenting Examples/Instances of the New Lesson
Show some pictures of finishing materials, accessories and designs.

What are the finishing materials you

can see in the pictures?
D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New
Skills No. 1
There are sources of finishing materials like:
1. Shellac – it is a good finish for many projects. It comes from the excreta of insects called a luc bug.
The colour is yellow and appears like small pieces of cellophane. Before it is used, it is mixed with
denatured alcohol.
2. Varnish – it is another finishing material that beautifies and preserves a project. It is made from
copal gum dissolved in pure boiled linseed oil. Copal gum comes from resin of pine trees buried
several feet below the ground. Linseed oil comes from oil of cotton seed. When varnish becomes
sticky and hard, add turpentine to make it thin and usable again. Varnish and turpentine are sold in
cans and bottles.
3. Paint – it is another finishing material that is always used because of its beautiful colour and a good
protector of materials. The body of paint is a mixture of four elements: pigment, vehicle, thinner, and
drier. It comes in cans of different sizes. When the paint gets sticky or hard, add paint thinner. If
thinner is not available, use gasoline or petroleum as a substitute.
4. Lacquer – this is a synthetic product which is largely used in all manufactured articles. This finishing
material could retain the natural colour of the material to which it is applied. Like varnish and shellac
it is sold in cans and bottles. The solvent used is lacquer thinner.

11
5. Stain (Tina) – stain is colouring material which is applied to the surface of a wood to improve its
appearance. There are three kinds of stain: oil stain, water stain, and spirit stain.
When you mix the dye (tina) with petroleum, the result is oil stain. When the dye is mixed with
water, it is now water stain. When the dye is mixed with alcohol, the mixture is called spirit stain.
The dye is sold in boxes or in kilos. Spirit stain is ready mixed. It is sold in cans and bottles. All
of these stains are applied by means of brush, spray, or cotton cloth.
6. Sandpaper – it is made grits, usually ground silica, flint, quartz, or emery glued to thick paper or
cloth. Sandpaper for wood is called flint paper and for metal it is called emery cloth at present we
have water proof abrasive for metal. Both are used for smoothing rough surface of objects.
7. Glue – glue is a paste for wood materials. It is in powder or in cake form. It is manufactured from
fish, animals, and plastic resin.
What are the different kinds of finishing materials?
E. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skill No. 2

There are processes and treatments done on some materials before making them into
articles.
Treating Bamboos
1. Preserving and Treating Bamboos
There are various ways of treating bamboo to preserve its natural beauty. It is called the
resin-oil extraction method. It is done by either wet or dry process. In the wet process, the
bamboo is soaked overnight in a solution of 0.1% to 1.2% caustic soda or carbonate of soda or
boiled in this solution for 10-15 minutes. In the dry process, bamboo poles are evenly heated
over charcoal at a temperature of 49 C to 54 C for 20-30 minutes.
2. Bleaching
Bleaching is the process of whitening or removing the colour by sunlight exposure, air
ventilation or by the use of chemical solutions.
3. Dyeing Bamboo Poles and Splints
Dyeing is the process of applying colour into the materials. The direct dyeing or reactive
dyeing method may be used. In direct dyeing, bamboo splints make sure of vegetable dye. It is
done by boiling water with dye and immersing the bamboo splints until the desired colour is
achieved. They are dried under the sun. In reactive dyeing, the following materials are used: 30%
of dye; salt is 30 grams per liquid and fixing agent is 30 grams per liquid. The dye is dissolved in

14
water and is diluted to the final volume. The bamboo splints are soaked for10 minutes then salt is
added and dyeing is continued for an hour.

2. Unlocking of difficulties
sketching - is the process by which an image is drawn in a loose
manner. It is a rough representation of an object, an idea, or a principle.
Shading - is the process of marking the inside of an outline to project
shadows or degrees of lightness and darkness
outlining -is the process of making on the outer parts of any shape,
object or any figure by the use or lines

C. Presenting examples/ instances of the new lesson:

Let the pupils describe what they see in the pictures.

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skill No. 1:

Why do we need to make a sketch when planning a product?
Is outlining necessary in preparing a design? Why?
How does shading affect in the marketing of the product?
D. Discussion on Concept and Practicing New Skill No. 2:
What are the tools and Instruments used in sketching, shading and outlining?
Drawing illustrates the shape and appearance of the project.
You will need different tools to illustrate the appearance of the project you will do. Below are the common
tools and instruments used in drawing:

Drawing table – is made of wood

,measuring 26x 22 or 18x24 inches. The
working edge is straight and the surface is
smooth.

T square – is made of wood, metal, or

plastic, and has two parts joined together in a
90 angle head and blade.

23
Triangles – These are used to draw vertical
and oblique lines, the most common of which
are triangles 45, 30, 60 and 90.

Protractor – is a tool used to set off

measurements of angles and arcs that cannot
be made by triangles. It has a scale on the
outer side, starting from 0 to 180 from right to
left. The inner scale starts from 0 and up to
180.

Pencils These are tools used in drawing,

which come in different grades hardiness.
Pencils are classified according to number
and letter like B, B1,6B,HB and IH.

pim/JPEG_1000x1000/ST55100WP_staedtler_staed_mars_551_comfort_compass_multi.jpg Compass- is used in drawing arcs and
circles. This is pointed and has a pencil at the
end.

http://192.168.1.1/html/home.html Divider – like the compass, this is used to

divide distances into two equal parts and to
transfer measurements and space, points or
lines.

What is the item/listed in the chart?
If you were to sell the item, what will be the price per piece?

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #1

What are the steps in computing the selling price?

Discuss the proper procedure in computing the selling price.

Steps on how to get the selling price and the possible income.

Project: Beaded bracelet

1. Add all the cost of materials plus cost labor to get the unit cost for each bracelet.

Materials -------------------- Php 60.00

Labor (Php 30.00/bracelet)---- Php 30.00
Php 90.00

2. Count how many beaded bracelets were made. Multiply this with total cost of materials
plus labor to get your capital.

Php 90.00 x 10 bracelets = Php 900.00 (capital)

3. Multiply Php 90.00 x 20% for mark-up purposes.

Php 90.00
X 20% (.20)
Php 18.00 mark-up price

4. Add the mark-up to your capital. The sum will be the selling price.

53
Php 90.00
+ 18.00
Php 108.00 selling price

Define Business income, Revenue & Expense

Business Income is the amount of gain earned from a sale of a service and/
or product after deducting all incidental expenses incurred by the business.
Revenue is the amount of money received (or to be received) in exchange for
product and/or services provided and sold. Revenue includes gross receipts on the
sale of service – or gross sale of product.
Expense is the amount of money paid (or to be paid) in exchange for product
and/ or service received and purchased. Sample expenses include inventory
purchases, salary and wages, transportation, advertising, electric and water bills,
communication, professional fees, etc.

Steps in Computing Business Income

1. Identify all the products and/or services sold in a given period and then total the
amount. The total represents the revenue.
2. Identify all the cost you pay in order to operate your business in the same given
period. The total represents your total expenses.
3. To compute your business income, subtract your total expenses against your total
revenue.

http://www.moolf.com/interesting/photo-series-of-chinese-toy-factory-workers.html

What can you say about the picture?

Did they proceed right away in mass production? What did they do first?

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #1

How important is planning specially in mass production?

Here are some advantages of an effective production plan and scheduling.

 Reduced labour costs by eliminating wasted time and improving process flow.
 Reduced inventory costs by decreasing the need for safety stocks and excessive
work-in-process inventories.
 Optimized equipment usage and increased capacity.
 Improved on-time deliveries of products and services.

What are the key elements to address in production plan?

The production plan initially needs to address specific key elements well in
advance of production in order to ensure an uninterrupted flow of work as it unfolds.

 Material ordering—Materials and services that require a long lead time or are at an
extended shipping distance, also known as blanket orders, should be ordered in
advance of production requirements. Suppliers should send you materials
periodically to ensure an uninterrupted pipeline.
 Equipment procurement—Procuring specialized tools and equipment to initiate the
production process may require a longer lead time. Keep in mind that the equipment
may have to be custom made or simply difficult to set up. This type of equipment may
also require special training.
 Bottlenecks (delays)—These are constraints or restrictions in the process flow and
should be assessed in advance so you can plan around them or eliminate them
before you begin production. When you assess possible bottlenecks, be aware that

57
they may shift to another area of the process. Dealing with bottlenecks is a continual
challenge for any business.
 Human resources acquisitions and training—Key or specialized positions may
demand extensive training on specialized equipment, technical processes or
regulatory requirements. These employees should be interviewed thoroughly about
their skills. When hiring them, allow sufficient time for training and be sure that they
are competent in their work before the job begins. This will ensure that your process
or service flows smoothly.

Why do we need to classify waste materials?
Why is recycling important? Background
Information for the Teacher
- Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and
objects. It is an alternative to "conventional" waste disposal that can save
material and help lower greenhouse gas emissions (compared to plastic
production for example).

- Recycling can prevent the waste of potentially useful materials and reduce the
consumption of fresh raw materials, thereby reducing: energy usage, air pollution
and water pollution.
- Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third
component of the "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle".
- Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, and cardboard, metal,
plastic, tires, textiles, and electronics.
- Every day, large quantities of waste are produced throughout the world. In
order to treat this waste, it must be classified so that it can be directed
toward the appropriate treatment facility.

What are the different processes in recycling?
What are the importance of recycling?
BACKROUND:
recycle: Processing waste and using it as raw material for new products; that is, making trash into
something useful instead of just throwing it out. It is often called "resource recovery" because it is
actually recovering and reusing natural resources. reduce: Minimizing the production and
consumption of items that are made from new, NOT recycled, materials. Not creating trash in the
first place and lessening in amount, number or other quantity (pre-cycling).
reuse: Extending the life of an item by using it again, repairing it, modifying it, or creating new uses
for it instead of throwing it away.
