INTRODUCTION
The Machine we have designed is used for grinding any shape of object like Circular, Rectangular,
and Polygon. In our project, abrasive belt is used for grinding the material. The abrasive belt is
rotated by the single-phase induction motor.
Grinding is the process of removing metal by the application of abrasives which
are bonded to form a rotating wheel or belt. When the moving abrasive particles
contact the workpiece, they act as tiny cutting tools, each particle cutting a tiny
chip from the workpiece. It is a common error to believe that grinding abrasive
wheels remove material by a rubbing action; actually, the process is as much a
cutting action as drilling, milling, and lathe turning. Grinding is used to finish
work pieces that must show high surface quality (e.g., low surface roughness)
and high accuracy of shape and dimension
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
Our college, have various types of machines and equipments. The
Abrasive belt grinding machine is made in college successfully. It is a
special purpose equipment and requires more skills. These parts are
made in college. Its sub-Components price is also considerable.
This project gives us knowledge, experience and skills along with new
ideas of manufacturing. It is a working project and has a guarantee of
success. Also, some of the material is available in our college. This
project we could accomplish in less time. So, we have selected this
machine. Also, this project has fulfilled objectives laid by curriculum of
Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education. We have successfully
carried our market survey of raw material and manufactured the product.
We can actually implement practical procedure for manufacturing
different components.
AIM OF THE PROJECT
• Our main aim of the project i.e. Abrasive Belt Grinding Machine is to grind the material or
polishing the material. Material that is used for grinding or polishing may be of Steel or Wood.
NEED

Today’s world requires speed in each and every field. Hence rapidness and quick working is the
most important. Now a days for achieving rapidness, various machines and the equipments are
manufactured by the man.

(Before) (After)
APPLICATION & ADVANTAGES
• Application:-
1. Finishing: Surface Roughness, removal of micro burrs, cosmetic finishing, polishing
2. Deburring: radiusing, burr removal, edge breaking
3. Stock Removal: High stock removal, cleaning (e.g. of corrosion), eliminating mill or tool marks,
dimensioning
• Advantages:-
1. The machine is compact in size and handy to operate.
2. Maintenance is less.
3. It can be used on any place of small grinding application.
4. By varying the pulley diameter, the speed of the abrasive belt to be changed.
MAINTENANCE
• Maintenance for belt:-
Manually turn the belt in its track and examine it, if you find any cracks or areas with extreme wear.
• Maintenance for Roller:-
The sides of each roller should line up with each other.
• Maintenance for Body:-
Vaccum and give your sander a good once over with the vacuum.

GRINDING METHOD

• These are several basic methods for belt grinding:

(Stroke belt) (Platen belt) (Wide belt) (Centerless belt grinder)

• Wild belt grinding is a familiar process in industry as well as in home applications.
• Abrasive:
An abrasive is a material, often a mineral, that is used to shape or finish a workpiece through rubbing.
While finishing a material often means polishing it to gain a smooth, reflective surface which can
also involve roughening as in satin, matte or beaded finishes.
• Working Principle:
The abrasive belt is used to grind the material. This abrasive belt is rotated by the single-phase
induction motor. This machine is fixed on the work table. The roller wheel is mounted on the two end.
One side of the roller wheel shaft, one v-pulley is coupled by the suitable arrangement. The single-
phase induction motor with V-pulley arrangement is used. Belt grinding is an abrasive machining
process used on metals and other materials. It is typically used as a finishing process in industry.

PROJECT DESIGN
CALCULATIONS
• Design of bearing

1/3
W1 = 10 k, W2 = 30 kg, N = 360 rpm (97.2x 106 x 103) + (10.8x 106 x 303)
C = ---------------------------------------------
Therefore no. of revolution during 90% of time, 106
L1 = 0.9 x360 x 60 x 5000 ⸫ L1 = 97.2 x 106 min C = [ 2160000 + 15360000]1/3
Number of revolutions during 10% of time C = [78000]1/3
L2 = 0.1 x 360 x 60 x 5000 ⸫ L2 = 10.8 x 106 min. C = 50.8 kgf. ⸫1kgf= 9.8 newton [N]
1/3
L1W13 + L2W23 C =497.84 N
C = ---------------------
106 ⸫For static load 50.8 kgf bearing SKF 6203 is suitable
Design of Bolt:
Let us check the strength: -
Also, initial tension in the bolt when belt is fully tightened.
P =30 kg = 300 N is the value of force applied by hand
Also, P = Π /4 dc2x ft
300 x 4
ft = ------------------------------ = 3.76 N / mm2
3.14 x (12 x 0.84)2

the calculated ft is less than the maximum ft hence our design is safe.
CONCLUSION

The project “Fabrication of Multi-Purpose Abrasive Belt Grinder” is that designed and erected.

The design and erection of this machine involved a great deal of effort to make the project successful
and useful.

We conclude that project on “Fabrication of Multi-Purpose Abrasive Belt Grinder” that it will be
very useful in laboratory of our college for
‘I-scheme’ students in their MEM lab (Mechanical Engineering Material).
