1 Site Levelling
Excavation / filling operations for site levelling shall be planned for execution to minimise
handling of excavated material and transportation thereof. Blending of the materials shall
be done by selective excavation and filling operation. Filling shall be done in horizontal
layers not exceeding 300 MM compacted thicknesses or as directed by the Engineer.
Heavy earth moving plant and vibratory rollers shall be deployed over the loose material
of the fill to achieve good compaction at Optimum Moisture Content as directed by the
Engineer. Adequate allowance shall be made for subsidence of fill material and excess or
shortfall shall be made good by appropriate cutting / filling.
All areas shall be graded to a uniform formation level with proper slope towards nearest
drain. The ground shall be sloped away from the building wall at a pitch approximate 1%
to provide surface drain. The difference in levels shall not be more than +/- 10cm locally.
2.2 Embankments
2.2.1 Foundation preparation for embankments shall be done on clearance of the site from
vegetal growth and grubbing Founding strata shall be compacted as much as possible by
rolling or tamping before placement of fill material and water content of founding strata
should be same as that specified for embankment fill. Any pockets of loose material /
depressions left in founding strata as a result of clearing operation shall be filled and
compacted with the same material as the surrounding strata.
2.2.2 Fill material, unless tested, shall not be placed and the foundation inspected and
approved by the Engineer. Material shall be placed in even, continuous, horizontal layers
over full width of embankment in well compacted layers not exceeding 200 MM
thickness. Each layer shall be compacted by means of Vibratory Rollers or by any other
mechanical means. Before rolling, the water content shall be checked and corrected by
sprinkling with water or adding dry material. The water content shall be within plus or
minus 2% of Optimum Moisture Content. Density of compacted layers shall be 96% of
Standard Procter Density. Number of tests to be conducted for determination of moisture
content and density shall be as prescribed by the Engineer.
2.2.3 Side slopes of embankments shall be formed along with the main embankment. No side
dumping shall be done for the formation of slopes. When required, the width of each
layer shall be constructed slightly in excess of required width and slopes trimmed to
remove loose edge materials and completed to lines shown in drawings or as directed by
the Engineer. Sub-grades for road works shall be thoroughly wetted sufficiently in
advance of placing of any Base Course and it shall be ensured that it is firm and moist for
at least 50 MM below the surface. If the sub-grade for any reason be loose or have density
less than required it shall be re-compacted and re-finished. No traffic or hauling
equipment shall be permitted to ply on finished Sub-grade. Any damages caused to the
Sub-grade shall be made good by the Bidder at his own cost.
20.1 Storm Water Drains
20.2.1 Excavation
Excavation in Trenches shall be carried out to the levels and Slopes on the Drawings. The
sides of the Trenches shall be dressed to present an even surface. Any excess excavation
resulting from the side slope instability shall be filled by the Bidder at his own expense
and made good. Such filling shall be properly compacted as per specifications.
20.2.2 Compaction of Side Slopes
The Side Slopes of the Trenches shall be properly dressed to remove any undulations and
compacted with plate compactions or removal means to present an even and hard
surface to receive the lining. The undulations or unevenness shall not be excess of +
30mm. The compaction shall be done to a Procter Density of 95%.

20.2.3 Embankment
Where the Main Storm Water Drain is in Embankment the same shall be built up in layers
not exceeding 150 mm and compacted including watering to achieve the required OMC
of not less than 35% and compaction to a Procter Density of 96%.
The Soil used to build up the Embankment can be the same as excavated from the Trench
or may be borrowed from a lead of upto 2 Km if the excavated soil is not suitable.

20.2 Roads
These Specifications have been exhaustively drawn from, ‘‘AASHTO guide for pavement
structures’ published by the American Association of state highway and transportation
official and shall apply to all road and bridge works required to be executed under the
Bidder or as directed by the Engineer. Where these Specifications are silent, references
shall be made to the Specifications for Road and Bridge Works these are binding on all
the Parties to the Contract. The works shall be carried out to the satisfaction of the
Engineer and conform to the location, lines, dimensions, grades and cross-sections shown
on the drawings or as indicated by the Engineer. The quality of materials, as may be
needed at the site, salient features of the construction work and quality of finished work
shall comply with the requirements set forth in these Specifications.
