Abstract:

This paper undertakes a study to unearth the relationship between job satisfaction and job
performance among the academic staff of the private universities operating in Malaysia. The
job satisfaction factors that the paper has looked into are working condition, job security,
remuneration, relationship with colleagues, recognition, and advancement. Job performance
has been evaluated under task performance and contribution of the employee to the social as
well as the psychological core of the organization. This study determines the correlation
between the job satisfaction and job performance factors using descriptive research & survey
method. The data for the research is collected by handing out a 5 point Likert’s scale
questionnaire to the faculty of the private universities in Malaysia. Pearson’s Correlation
Coefficient and Multiple Regression are the research techniques used in this paper.

Introduction:
In Malaysia there is a significant difference between the QS world ranking of public and private
universities. None of the private universities are in the QS world ranking. While determining
these rankings performance of the academic staff is the main criteria so the performance of the
academic staff may be a reason why these universities are left out of the world ranking since
the HEC of Malaysia has provided same quality of service to the students. Research
performance, teaching performance, consultancy, and contributions to society and
administrative work are the main determinants of university's ranking. Employer reputation
and proportion of international students are not the major determinants in evaluating
university’s ranking. Academic staffs play a major role in a university in order to achieve the
objectives of the university Performance of Academicians.

This study investigates the relationship between job performance and job satisfaction factors
among the academic staff of the private universities in Malaysia by treating the factors as as
dependent and independent variables respectively. This study would determine the main job
satisfaction factors that influence the most on the job performance of the academic staff.

Methodology:
Research Design:

The study undertaken will use the survey approach to collect relevant data to analyze the
relationship between the job satisfaction factors and the job performance among the academic
staff of the private universities of Malaysia.

Sampling Method:

The is the most convenient approach to collect data from the large population that are near
and readily available for the purposes of research, regardless of characteristics, until the
required sample size has been achieved si called the convenience sampling and this technique
has been used in this study because it is not possible to research every respondent. This
research is targeted to the academic staff working in private universities.
Research Instrument:

The research instrument employed by the study is a questionnaire to collect the relevant data
and is distributed in the private universities using walk-in approach. The genuineness of the
research is ensured by making the questionnaire voluntary and making the respondents to
adhere to strict confidentiality. The questionnaire consists of three parts including a demograph
profile, evaluation of job performance using 5 point Likert scale questions and the third part
evaluates the job performance with the questions relating to task performance and the social
and psychological contribution to the core of the organization.

Results:

Pearson’s correlation was used to investigate the relationship between job satisfaction and job
performance. The results obtained show us that recognition is the job satisfaction factor that
has the strongest positive relationship with job performance. Whereas remuneration was the
factor that was had the weakest relationship with job performance.

Regression Analysis shows us that recognition has the most influence on job performance while
remuneration had the least.

Conclusion:
The study conducted researched the relationship between the job satisfaction factors and the
job performance of the academic staff of private universities operating in Malaysia. Six job
satisfaction factors(working condition, job security, remuneration, relationship with colleagues,
recognition, and advancement) were investigated whether they have a positive relationship
with job performance. Results showed that among the six job satisfaction factors recognition is
the factor that has the most influence in the job performance. Whereas remuneration is the
only factor that does not have a relationship with job performance.
