Social Media has globally become a very helpful tool in different fields. It has linked
people to the Cyber World wherein everything is possible. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and
many more are some of the Social Medias that peak the High Rise domination. The existence of
this Social Medias not only connects people to the other side of the world, but it also widens
Business Careers, Job Opportunities, Relationships, and Education. The world has gotten
inculcated to the students. However, allowing students to use cell phone to surf the internet for
research purposes that is related to the subject has been abused. Students are more frequent in
using phones to access social media such as Facebook. It has become problem in our school
because students’ too much exposure on Social Media diminished their study habit. In Facebook
as the most popular social networking site, Job hiring often calls attention for the unemployed to
really grab the chances; business is quite boosted and promoted rather than endorsing in malls
and television; relationship is vastly prominent for two strangers meet up; Education expands in
pages and group chats wherein assignments and group task were sent. The statistical data showed
that there are more than 500 million people with Facebook membership and the majority of them
are members of other social networking sites besides approximately 250 million of these
memberships visit Facebook site in each day at least one time (Boyd & Ellison, 2007). But, for
students in our school it was used as wall for resentments, bullying, dating and etc. Instead of

Social media has really become an integral part of people in daily lives (Boyd & Ellison,
2007; Hakoyama & Hakoyama, 2011). Raacke & Raacke-Bonds (2008), Williams & Merten
(2009) and Raffterty (2009) indicated that people have a social networking sites account based
on difference reasons (making new friends, following famous people, sharing personal
Pedagogically, Social Media subjugates students’ mind-set through misleading usage and
unprecedented guidance. They spend most of their time checking accounts, liking others’ post,
poking somebody, posting nonsense and many more. For that reason, they’ll disregard to check
their notes on what to study. Wang, et al. (2011) showed that children spent plenty of time on
SM instead of doing homework, studying the courses, and preparing examination. Many studies
(Duncan, Hoekstra, & Wilcox, 2012; Kalpidou, Costin, & Morris, 2011; Ophir, Nass, & Wagner,
2009; Wang et al., 2011) reported that students’ grades negatively affected using of SM. As an
outcome of too much exposure to Social Media, students of Matiao National High School who
The purpose of the study is to examine the mainstream of Students’ exposure to Social
Media and its effect to their study habit and how it will be avoided.

Review of Related Literature
Previous studies and related literatures were used as benchmark in conceptualizing this
study. They made significant contribution especially in the discussion of the results.
The Internet
The internet is at the heart of the information age, called “the mother of all networks,” the
internet (the “net”) is a worldwide computer network that connects hundreds of thousands of
smaller networks. These networks link educational, commercial, nonprofit, and military entities,
as well as individuals (Williams, Brian K. & Sawyer, Stacey C., 2010). The Internet plays a
profound role in the field of education. The academic community has undergone profound
applications. The Internet is a priceless source of information for students and a tool to enhance
their productivity (Jones 2002; Metzger, Flanagin & Zwarun 2003; Kirschner and Karpinski
2010]. Through the aid of internet students can easily access Social Media-related sites.
The internet provides an array of powerful tools that may help in transforming the present
isolated teacher-centered and text-book bound classrooms into rich, students focused, interactive
knowledge environment. The Internet was described as a ‘sea of information’, containing texts
which are not housed between library and bookshop walls and subject areas span across all fields
Despite of the positive contribution of internet to education and most especially to the
students, it has also re-shaped the routine of the students. Through internet, Social Medias can be

access. Students freely do what they want to the extent that is considered abusive and
compulsive. In other words, they just went to the net to waste a lot of time.
Social Media has pervasively become an integral part to the students. It shifted their
attitude and behavior to reading books and novels; instead, they just resort to social media to
gain answers to their assignments, research and individual task. The study habit of students has
been washed down as a result of the emergence of technology and the advent of social media.
Arnold and Paulus (2010) found that even when social media is used for an educational purpose,
students incorporate the technology ino their lives in a way that may differ from the intentions of
the course instructor. For example, off-topic or non-academic discussions occur on social media
because of its primary design as a social networking tool (Lin et al., 2013). Social Media has
been greatly useful tool in education but the problem is it has unreasonably misused. Students
According to Boyd (2007) report, teenagers and students embraced social media so as to
interact with peers, for information sharing, re- formulating their personalities and thereby
getting their social lives off the ground. Michele and Kist (2008) who studied the risks in using
social media (Facebook, MySpace and Twitter) mentioned that it increased youths’ exposure to
sexual harassment this is one negative impact. Kord (2007) confirmed that students’ behaviors
are easily influenced by social media sites because of distasteful comments posted to harass
peers. Through social media, people can easily be duped or even lured into immorality.
According to Gross, and Acquisti, (2005), the internet’s initially meant for academic information
collection for research, but in recent times, it is increasingly used for communication amongst
4
people and for entertainment business especially by students. In addition, Bonds-Raacke and
Raacke, (2008) reported that social media has influenced the adolescents’ way of
thinking/reasoning and interacting including the way they collect information (Dr. Langat
Andrew Chris). The abusive used of Social Media by the students clearly affects their study
habit. Instead of reading books and studying their notes, students rush to their social media

school. It is their active behavior to learn further about a certain a lesson. The concept of study
habit according to Husain (2000) is broad, as it combines nearly all other sub-concepts such as
study attitude, study methods and study skills. Students concentrating in a healthy study habit
acquire a more effective learning experience and knowledge. Meaning, lack of study or having

At a 0.05 level of significance, the following hypotheses in this study were tested:
H0: There is no significant correlation between the effect of social media on study habit
H1: There is significant correlation between the effect of social media on study habit
The findings of this study may provide educators necessary information in governing
students’ attitude and behavior in using social media. Educators may be able to cope up
techniques and approaches on how to regulate social media compulsiveness of the students. The
study habit of the students may be uplifted if social media will be incorporated properly in the
teaching-learning process. The result of this study will encourage teachers, administrators and
even curriculum planners how social media will be incorporated properly in pedagogical method.

Scope of the Study
The focus of this research work is to primarily study the effect of social media on study
habit of students. This study comprises Grade 10 students of Matiao National High School who
are frequently using social media and students who are not frequently using social media. This
study is done during the first semester of the school year 2018-2019.
This study is anchored on the concept that students’ learned best in the absence of social
media or with the proper usage of it. As of Heidegger’s “Shared-World Theory” that includes the
modalities of instrumentalism, students tend to explore wide scope to venture something new or
express their selves. Design is the practice of minimizing the usage of social media to enhance
the study skills of the students of Matiao National High School. Social media will be the
independent variable that will determine whether or not it affects the study habit of students as
dependent variable.

CHAPTER 2
METHOD
This chapter presents the method and procedure that is applied in this study. It is
organized under the following sub-headings: Research Design, Research Locale, Research
Research Design
The research design to be adopted for this study is a descriptive survey. However, the
researchers will utilize the explanatory design through collecting and analyzing the quantitative
data on the effect of social media on students’ study habit from the results of a test given to them
together with the numerical data. The process will then be followed with the collection of
qualitative data through an interview to follow up and refine the quantitative data.
This study will be conducted at Matiao National High School, Archie Heights, Matiao,
City of Mati, Davao Oriental. It will be a study that determines the level of exposure of Social
Research Respondents
9
This study will utilize random sampling method. A total sample size of one hundred
(100) students will be randomly selected from the total population of 346 students in Grade 10
level of Matiao National High School who are frequently using social media and students who
Research Instruments
In this study, the researchers will use two instruments: (a.) a survey questionnaire using
Likert Scale Attitude Survey to measure the numerical data of the respondents’ frequency of
using social media. The questionnaire was designed by putting up statements which respondents
had to rank their level of agreement or disagreement. (b.) a group interview to collect qualitative
statistical analysis. A numerical value is assigned to each potential choice and a mean figure for
all the responses is computed at the end of the evaluation or survey. Likert scales usually have
five potential choices (strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree) but sometimes
go up to ten or more. The final average score represents overall level of accomplishment or
attitude toward the subject matter. This survey will measure and represent the overall level of
b. Group Interview
This method aims at collecting high-quality data in a social context (Patton, 2002), which
primarily help understand a specific problem from the viewpoint of the participants of research
10
Variables
As this study seeks to determine the effect of social media on study habit of students,
hence, the variables: In this study, the researchers select two variables which are the following:
Dependent variable is researcher’s aim to understand and describe the dependent variable.
The student’ study habit will serve as the dependent variable of the study.
The social media will serve as the independent variable of the study. This includes
facebook, google, Instagram, skype, blog, and any other cyberlinks. As hypothesized, this study
seeks to test the significant correlation between the effect of social media on study habit among
Grade 10 students.
The data gathering process will involve students as participants, with that, the
researchers should seek permission with the administration and the school personnel in authority
As this research seeks to determine the effect of the usage social media on the
educational performance of students, the researchers will conduct a survey to collect the needed
data through the use of survey questionnaire and group interview with the selected students from
Grade 10 level of Matiao National High School which will be administered in this school year
2018-2019. A total of 100 copies of the questionnaire will be distributed to elicit responses from

The following statistical tools will be used in tabulating and analyzing the data gathered:
Descriptive Statistics: The analysis of data that helps describe, show or summarize data in a
meaningful way. This will allow a simpler data interpretation of this study.
Mean: Refers to the average that is used to derive the central tendency of the data in question. It is
determined by adding all the data points in a population and then dividing the total by the number of
points.
12
Standard Deviation: This will be used to determine the spread or scatter of the observation in
order to describe the effect of social media on study habit among students.
