VENEZUELAN STANDARDS
STEEL CONSTRUCTION FOR BUILDINGS
LIMIT STATE METHOD
(1st Revision)
The provisions of this standard and that of the COVENIN-MINDUR (the Venezuelan Commission
for Industrial Standards and the Venezuela Ministry of Urban Development) Standard 1756-98
Earthquake Resistant Construction complement each other with reference to suitability,
reinforcement or repair of steel or mixed steel and concrete structures with specialized publications
[NEHRP 1997c]
By the date of establishment of the current standard, the COVENIN-MINDUR 1753-85 Reinforced
Concrete Structures for Construction, based on the ACI Code 318-83, was already in force, and the
American Concrete Institute announced version ACI 318-83, the user of which will be able to make
use of the transitory provision article of Section 3.3.1 of Standard 1756-98.
C-1.2 Storage
This standard will apply to structures made of steel and mixed steel and concrete structures, except
when supplementary provisions or more demanding requirements are necessary, such as, for
example in the following cases:
(a) Unusual types of construction.
(b) Steel structures which:
a. Have great height or lighting (see Appendix F)
b. Must be mobile or quickly dismantled
c. Are exposed to severe environmental conditions or possible severe impact such as
results from automobile collision or explosion.
d. Are required to meet aesthetic or architectural demands or requirements of a non-
structural nature.
e. Employ materials not included in Chapter 5.
f. Possess other special features or characteristics which could affect the design,
manufacture and/or the assembly.
g. Tanks or pressurized containers, piles or posts.
Those criteria of the first version of the standard which specify the exclusion from storage of steel
sections, tubes, cold-formed steel members and joists which are governed by specific standards are
maintained [Guitierez, 1982]. In the respective interpretations of these specific standards, the
fundamental ideas of when the concepts developed for open, laminated or soldered steel sections do
not apply are explained in detail. The norm entitled Specifications for the Design of Cold-Formed
Steel Members, 1996, from the American Institute of Steel and Iron AISI, is recommended for
projects with cold-formed steel members, constituting rounded corners and slender flat elements.
