2019-20
LESSON PLAN
Class : VIII Subject : CHEMISTRY Duration: 8 periods

Topic: SYNTHETIC FIBRES AND PLASTICS

Sub Topics (optional)
Learning Intentions: Students will be able to
 Know about different kinds of synthetic fibres
 Know about the polymers and monomer of different kinds of
fibres
 Explain the characteristics and uses of synthetic fibres
 Know about plastic as material of choice
 Understand plastics and its effect on environment
Background Students should have the basic knowledge of fbres.
Knowledge:  Name of some natural fibres and their sources.

Content:  General characteristics of fibre

 Monomer and polymer
 Properties of following fibres and their
uses will be discussed briefly in class.
1. Rayon
2. Nylon
3. Polyester
4. PET
5. Acrylic
 Types of plastics and their properties will
be discussed briefly in class.
1. Thermoplastic
2. Thermosetting plastic
 Biodegradable and non-biodegradable
substances
Methodology  Introduction to the lesson by CSI activity.
 Discussion and explanation of the content.
 Interactive approach.
 Demonstration
 Audio visual aids

Activities:  To compare the tensile strength of nylon, cotton and wool.

 To identify natural and synthetic fibres by burning test.
 To compare water absorption capacity of different fibres.

Assignments  Define the terms- polymer, monomer, thermoplastics,

CW: thermosetting plastics, biodegradable substances, non
biodegradable substances
 A web chart on the characteristics of synthetic fibre.
 A tabular chart will be formed on the polymer and monomer of
different kind of synthetic fibres.
 Diagram of the linear and cross linked arrangement of polymers
 Ncert questions- 5,6,7,9,10
 Extra questions:
1. Why is rayon known as regenerated fibre?
2. Why is it not advisable to burn synthetic fibres and plastics?
Assignments  Prepare a list of 10 articles made from fibres. Segregate them
HW: into natural and synthetic or mixed fibre.
 Ncert question 1,2,3,4,11,14
 Extra questions:
1. Write two differences between nylon and rayon?
2. Radhika went to market to buy blanket. The shopkeeper
showed her blankets made of acrylic and wool. She preferred to
buy acrylic blanket. Can you guess why?

Assessments  Peer assessment - definition

 Short answer questions-
1. Name the monomer and polymer of following:
a. rayon
b. acrylic
c. polyester
d. PET
 One word answer-
1. The fibre which is also known as artificial silk.
2. The fibre which is also known as artificial wool.
3. Plastics used to make switches and plugs.
4. Plastics used to make coating on frying pan.
 Mind map- Different modes of nutrition
 Quiz on smart board
 Worksheet
Lab activity worksheet
Process Observant, Analytical
Skills/Mindsets:

Value Integration: Children will be sensitized towards the nature by explaining them the
harmful effects of plastics and synthetic fibres
