Module 7: Graphic Design Syllabus

Instructor: Dr. Elizabeth Downs

Module 7 Designer: Joseph Johnson
Communication & E-mail: Please use Folio course email for all communications dealing with this
module. For personal emails please send to: edowns@georgiasouthern.edu

Course Module Description: This course module is designed to build on previous modules in this unit
such as Communication and Perception theory, Web 2.0 tools, visual images, and Principles of Design for
a full understanding of Graphic Design. Students will culminate this module with a graphic design
project that will showcase what they have learned and how they have applied it.

Course Objectives: At the end of this module students will be able to:
i. Understand what graphic design is and how it is used in other disciplines, career fields, and everyday
life.

ii. Review the principles of design and demonstrate how they are used along with text and visual images
when creating a graphic design project.

iii. Facilitate discussions and interaction concerning graphic design among other online students in the
class, at points giving feedback to other students.

iv. Demonstrate how to use design elements to create a graphic design project that exemplifies a
coherent visual message to the audience.

Candidate Learning ISTE Standards:

Standard 1: Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and
demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

1a Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to
achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.
1c Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to
demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

1d Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to
choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore
emerging technologies.

Standard 3: Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge,
produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

3c Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create
collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.

3d Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and
theories and pursuing answers and solutions.

Standard 4: Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve
problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.

4a Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating
innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.

4b Students select and use digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design
constraints and calculated risks.

4c Students develop, test and refine prototypes as part of a cyclical design process.

Assignments and Evaluation

A detailed description for assignments (readings, discussions, and videos) and final project will be given
(along with a detailed rubric) within the module. Be sure to follow directions carefully as you prepare
your assignments. Use of appropriate Web 2.0 components for any/all parts of the assignments is
strongly encouraged. All assignments must be submitted electronically via GoView. Spelling and
grammar are graded components on most assignments.

Discussion: After reviewing the assigned resources, be sure to answer the discussion question. It is vital
that you also reply to two of your classmates. Simple “I agree” will not be acceptable. Please dig deep
concerning the content.

Project Submission: Final graphic design assignment will be turned in electronically via the GoView
Dropbox tool.

Due Dates: Assignment and the discussion for this module is due by the end of the week as stated for
the entire Unit.

Late Work: There will be no extensions for late work. Failure of Technology is not an acceptable excuse
for an assignment that is submitted late. If you have an emergency, please be sure you use the Georgia
Southern email address in the contact information above. Also, give yourself time to finish the module,
especially if technology were to down. (GoView down, your ISP is down, etc).
Course Grades:

Points Module
Earned Grade
91-100 A
81-90 B
71-80 C

The "A" grade may be interpreted to mean that the instructor recognized the student's exceptional
mastery of the course material.

The grade of "B" indicates that the student has demonstrated an above average

The "C" grade is the instructor's certification that the student has demonstrated minimal mastery of the
course material.

The student is graded "D" or "F" when his/her grasp of the course is unacceptable.
