SAMR/ISTE Paper

Since I am pursuing a career in the field of information technology, my personal

technology goals are to broaden my technological skills and to branch out as much as I can so I

can add these skills/abilities to my resume. By doing this, I can have many more options in my

career choices and more pathways to choose from to see which job in the future would best suit

me. Although I already mentioned this in the questionnaire in assignment #1, I am strongly

interested in a music career as well so if there is an opportunity that I can learn more about music

technology in this course I would greatly appreciate it.

Two of the ISTE standards for teachers that I believe correlate very strongly are the

learner and the analyst. The learner standard would be implemented into my classroom by

always learning how to improve my teaching practices on a regular basis, constantly evolving

how I teach by staying open minded to any new tips or techniques that I can apply to myself and

the technology I am using to teach my students. The learner standard and how I want to approach

it by staying open and always looking for improvement in my teaching is a very logical direction

to go towards when thinking technologically considering that technology is always evolving. The

other ISTE standard I wanted to talk about is the analyst standard. I believe the analyst is one of

the most important standards for teachers because it directly involves helping the students

achieve their goals for the class, which is what becoming a teacher should be all about. I would

implement this standard by asking students to complete exercises that I specifically design with

technology to see how much they are learning from the class and how much information they

have retained from my teachings that they can apply and use for themselves. This is important
because it becomes a learning curve for both the students and teachers. It is useful for the

students obviously because they have to apply what they learn for themselves instead of just

listening to a lesson or lecture. It is also useful to teachers because they can learn what they can

improve on what specific things they should improve on teaching if they notice a majority of

students are not understanding it. This is why I decided to write and correlate between the learner

and the analyst standard.

It is very important for students to be aware of and to know the ISTE standards for

students because each standard creates for an increasingly more efficient lifestyle as a student.

The empowered learner standard is the start of it all. A student cannot hope to make the most of

their classroom experience if they do not even establish their own goals. They would not be

pursuing anything and in turn their classroom experience would ultimately be a waste of time.

Once students can leverage technology and establish their own goal, they can working towards

the digital citizen standard. Technology is our entire world in this day and age, so as soon as

students can understand how to live and work in an interconnected digital world the sooner they

can apply their real life decisions based on what is ethical and what is not in the modern

technological world. The knowledge constructor standard is important because it is the epitome

of taking what you learn in the classroom and applying it to real learning experiences in real life

situations. The innovative designer standard (and my personal favorite ISTE standard for

students) is important because it channels creativity. The students should realize and understand

that what they learn in the classroom is not just in the box of the subject matter. They can apply

what they learn to create new things and becoming an innovative designer unlocks new ways of

thinking and going about how students can learn as well. Students should remember to know the
computational thinker standard, which correlates with the last standard but is also different

because it is more focused on solving technological issues. The creative communicator makes

ends meet with the first ISTE standard for students. It is important that after students establish

their own goals, they should be able to communicate what they learn to go and achieve those

same goals. Last but not least, the global collaborator standard is all about working with others

and sharing the knowledge everyone gains and communicate what they have learned to try and

collaborate and work on their own respective projects far beyond the classroom.

The SAMR Model can be used for technology in the classroom because it supports and

enables teachers to infuse technology into their everyday lessons. The goal of this model is to

achieve the highest efficiency of learning for the students in the class by utilizing technology. A

hypothetical lesson that implements technology with only substitution would be a lesson about

the Louvre. Instead of looking at art pieces from the textbook, students can substitute that by

searching up art pieces they wanted to see with the internet as well. Of course the Louvre is too

far to see in real life without a high budget, so to implement technology in the classroom with

redefinition for example would be to have virtual reality goggles for students to actually virtually

tour in the Louvre and walk around like they were actually there in real life.
