TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY

A. Preliminaries/Motivation

Good morning, everyone! Good morning, Maam!

Today we will start a new lesson. Before that,

let us have a simple game which I know most
of you are very familiar of—Jigsaw Puzzle.
There will be two sets of puzzle. You have to
form these puzzles on the board within 2
minutes and be able to identify what images
were formed.

The flags that you have here on the board are

the national flags of the two Korean states
that we know which are North Korea and
South Korea. But for the purpose of
singularity, we shall address these two as
simply Korea. This Asian neighbor has been
very familiar with us, Filipinos. This is because
of their rising music industry and artistry. We
have also noticed how distinct their culture is.
Let us get to know more about Korea.

We will have the discussion in a different

manner. I will divide you into four groups. I
will give each with prepared visual materials
(graphic organizers) and information about
Korea which you are going to utilize in the
discussion. You will be given 10 minutes to
study the information and choose two
representatives to discuss it in the front. This
oral discussion will be graded. The topics are:
Geography Education
Religion People

After every discussion I will provide more

input or additional information for further
learning about Korean culture.

Now that you already learned many things

about Korea, it’s time to get to know its
people even more. Have you already
experienced talking to or meeting a Korean? I
assume you usually see them in the television
or in the internet. Do you watch their
Koreanovelas? Well, I am one with you when
it comes to fangirling these Korean stars. So
based from these Korean stories which you
have seen, especially the love stories, what (Answers may vary)
can you say about the Koreans when they are
into love?

Alright. We will understand better what

Koreans do when it comes to love with this
story that you are going to read. But before
that, let me give you first this individual
activity which is a crossword puzzle. You will
do this in 3 minutes only.

The words to find are:

magistrate hasten desert wretch
cower fidelity defiance

B. During Reading
Please read silently the Tale of Ch’unhyang. I
will give you 30 minutes to read and we will
discuss afterwards.

C. Post Reading
1. Comprehension Questions

a. Describe Chu’nhyang as a young maiden. Chu’nhyang is a beautiful lady who is witty and
idealistic. She has a strong personality.

b. What does Ch’unhyang mean when she Ch’unhyang here is trying to say that if Yi
said, “Don’t know the butterfly must pursue Mong-Yong is interested with her, then it
the flower, and the geese must seek the sea.”? should be that the guy himself will come and
pursue her.

b. Why is it that the lover’s marriage was It is made secret because of the difference in
made a secret? What does this tell us about social status the two have. This could mean
the Korean’s culture when it comes to that traditionally, Koreans have this custom
marriage? that two people who wished to marry must be
of the same social standing for them to have a
formal ceremony.

c. What are the words that YiMong-Yong has The figurative expression means that Yi Mong-

d. What challenges did Ch’unhyang encounter The new magistrate offered her to be together
after his husband left? If you were her, would with him but she refused so she was sent to
you do the same? What does this illustrate prison. She grew thin and sick and was to be
regarding Korean’s attitude when facing executed at the great feast. An hour before
problems? Is this kind of attitude present she was set to be killed, the King’s inspector
among Filipinos? asked her to love him and come together with
him. Again, she refused. These attitudes and
actions of Ch’unhyang reflect the Korean’s
strong commitment and faithfulness to
relationships (family, friedship, dream, etc.).

e. Why is being faithful important? Can you (Answers may vary)

share an experience when someone has been
faithful or has shown faithfulness to you? So
what makes it an essential element in human
relationships such as friendship and in the
family? What are its manifestations?
2. Reflection
Write a short pledge of faithfulness or a
promise to someone or something: your
family, friend, studies, God, or even to your
life’s dream and ambition. Just choose one. Be
truthful and honest in what you will write. Do
this for 2 minutes. Afterwards, fold your
papers and put them inside this bottle.

3. Writing Skill: Using Cohesive Devices

Kindly read the two paragraphs on the board.
Which one is better? How can you say so? Paragraph B sounds better and is more
What are its differences? understandable than Paragraph A. This is
because there are words between sentences
that make them flow clearly from one idea to
the next.
That is right. So I think almost all agree that
Paragraph B is better. This is because of these
words that were used to connect one idea to
the next. There is a clear flow of ideas. We call
these words that were used as COHESIVE
DEVICES.
So what are cohesive devices?

-They are like cues that help readers progress

from one idea to another;
-They show logical relationships among parts
of a piece of writing as well as between
sentences and paragraphs;
-These include transition words and paragraph
hooks;
-They link sentences and paragraphs together
smoothly so that there are no abrupt jumps or
breaks between ideas.

Because as we know there are many types of

cohesive devices, I want you to identify under
what type are the transition words which I
gave each of you.

Types:
-Adding Information
and also moreover
furthermore in addition
-Giving Examples
for example for instance
specifically in particular
-Showing a Contrast
but however on the other hand
otherwise instead in contrast
- Showing a Similarity
likewise similarly in the same way
- Showing a Result
so as a result therefore
thus as a consequence
-Establishing Time Relation or Sequence
first second finally
in conclusion in summary meanwhile

Using Transition Words and Phrases:

-Put a comma after these if they are at the
beginning of a sentence.
example: I like to travel. Specifically, I enjoy
places with old cathedrals.
-Use a semicolon to connect the two
sentences.
example: I like to travel; specifically, I enjoy
places with old cathedrals.
-Use a comma before and after the
transitional word/phrase in the middle of a
clause.
example: I like to travel, and, specifically, I
enjoy places with old cathedrals.

What to Avoid in Using Cohesive Devices

1. Don’t use transition words at the end
of a sentence/paragraph.
2. Don’t overuse transitions.

Guided Practice
A. Read each sentence below and pick the
correct transition word.
1._______ I met my former boyfriend, I never
really understood the meaning of the word
unreliable.
Where Before First of all

Once frequently another

quickly become very popular.
Although When In the same way
4. There’s no room in your mouth for your
wisdom teeth, _____ they will have to be
removed.
for example so but

B. Answer the following questions and

underline the transition words that helped you
make your decision. (2 points)
1. Vietnamese and American cultures are
sharply different. 2. In Vietnam, two men or
two women often show affection in public, but
open affection between them is not
considered acceptable. 3. Also, Vietnamese
are often surprised by American family
relations. 4. Americans may live far from their
parents and grandparents. 5. Even if they’re in
the same city, they rarely live in the same
house. 6. However, three or four generations
generally live together in one Vietnamese
household, with elderly people cared for by
their children and grandchildren.

1. The relationship between the two parts of

sentence 3 is one of
a. time. c. contrast.
b. addition d. cause and effect.
2. The relationship of sentence 6 to sentence 5
is one of
a. contrast. c. cause and effect
b. addition d. comparison

IV. EVALUATION

Go back to the Tale of Ch’unhyang and list down 5-10 cohesive devices used in the story.
Also, be able to identify what type of transition words are they. You can make a chart so that it
will be easier for you. Choose 5 words and use them appropriately in your own sentences. Do
this in a 1/2 sheet of paper for 10 minutes

V. ASSIGNMENT

Interview couples (or your parents) about their views on how commitment and
faithfulness help build a lasting relationship. Make sure that these people have been together
for quite a long time already (5 years onwards). You can have your documentation of the
interview such as pictures, audio recordings or video. Write a short reflection in a short bond
paper about your interview experience and learning.
