FIBC Manufacturing Process
The bulk bag manufacturing process consists of a series of steps that apply regardless of
the design or customer specifications. Whether bags need to be made square, tall,
overbuilt or cost effective, each bag must undergo cyclic testing for SWL and safety
factor compliance. For products that require a low moisture transfer rate, bags can be
treated with laminate to improve the moisture barrier. Before bag construction begins,
however, the material must be woven and cut. The process of manufacturing bulk bags can
be broken down into the following steps.

Those process and materials used by industry are explained below:-

Extrusion

The first step involves extrusion, where a mix of virgin ingredients are melted and shaped
into tapes of specific measurements. The ingredients used in this process include
polypropylene (PP) granules, small amount of calcium carbonate, ultraviolet inhibitors and
possibly color pigmentation. At this stage, the tensile durability of the tapes is determined.
The tapes are loaded onto industrial bobbins in preparation for the weaving stage.

11
Weaving

The tapes formed from the PP granules are loaded onto weaving looms. Here, the
polypropylene fabric that forms the body for a bulk bag is woven into shape. The
resulting material is strong enough to carry a vast array of industrial products and
consumable goods. However, it’s “breathable,” and thus subject to the passage of
moisture. In addition to providing material for bulk bags, the woven PP material is also
used for loading and discharge components.

Lamination

Depending on the specifications of a customer, the fabric can be treated with a special
laminate that renders each bag moisture-resistant. Moisture resistant is accomplished with
lamination coating and is essential for bulk bags used in the transportation of granular
products, as well as for any product that must never be exposed to moisture.

Regular, un-laminated polypropylene material consists of tiny strands with microscopic

gaps within each weave. In essence, the material is breathable, and this can be a good

12
quality for the transportation and storage of various materials, but ill-suited for select
products. For example, sugar and salt should never be exposed to water, including water
that gets sucked from the moisture in the air.

Alternately, laminated bulk bags are convenient for the transportation of light powdery
products, such as flour, that could otherwise sift through the woven gaps of
polypropylene material when moved or shaken. During a mass flour shipment, the loss
could be substantial. With laminate-coated bulk bags, flour stays contained until it
reaches its final destination.

Cutting

The polypropylene fabric is fed into a slicing machine, where it’s cut into shapes of
specific measurements. The measurements are determined by whether the sides, edges or
bottoms are being produced during a given operation. The process by which the
measurements are made is automatic, which ensures exact lengths for each cut. Whether
a line of bulk bags needs to be square, tubular or vertically rectangular, the appropriate
cuts are made at this stage.

13
Printing

Once the pieces of the polypropylene fabric have been cut into shape, they are fed into a
printing machine. Here, impressions are made on the fabric. If a company has a brand
name or logo that they want to be applied to a line of bags, the printing occurs at this
stage. Depending on the brand in question, an assortment of colors may be implemented.
For the best possible impressions, a heavy-duty printer is necessary for this process.

14
Webbing

The handle pieces of bulk bags are made during this stage. Here, heavier tapes of
polypropylene fabric are spun into webbing material. Strips of this material are then cut
to precise measurements, which are determined by the size of the bags in production.
These strips form the handles, or lifting loops, of each bag. On most bulk bags, the
webbing strip lines the seams along each of the four sides, with handle loops above each
end.

15
Sewing Unit

At this stage, the various pieces that comprise the bulk bag — including both the square
and rectangular pieces of polypropylene fabric, as well as the heavier lifting-loop strips
— are put together with an industrial sewing machine. Bulk bags are sewn together in
mass quantities by a team of trained hands under the watchful eye of technical
supervisors. Each seam must be straight, tight and secure, with no creases or bends along
any of the sides or bottom ends.

Inspection

Once a line of bulk bags has been sewn together, each bag is inspected by quality control
inspectors. The purpose is to ensure each bag meets the required standards of strength and
durability for a product line of bulk bags. If any bags are found to be insufficiently sewn,
they are removed.

16
Burst Test

A select number of bulk bags enter into a testing ring to see whether the bags meet the Safe
Working Load (SWL) test. This step helps ensure the bags in production are strong enough
for their ultimate purpose. In most cases, this step is performed in advance of a general
production of bulk bags. Once a production has been completed, the burst test is once again
carried out on random bags to ensure the SWL is met.

17
Packing

Now that a mass production of bulk bags has been completed, the bags are compressed
and grouped into select numbers for distribution in bulk quantities. The compression is
done in a bale press, the results of which allow for the neat and easy packing of the bags.

Storage

With everything completed, the baled and packed bulk bags are sent to a storage room.
The bags await their dispatch to various customer locations. Once received by a
customer, the packed bulk bags are ready to be opened and put to use, whether the
intended purpose is for the transportation or storage of building materials, rubble, food
products or chemicals.

18
RAW MATERIALS USED

Raw material required for making of FIBC are poly propylene(P.P), low density poly
ethylene (L.D.P.E), High density poly ethylene (H.D.P.E) , liner low density poly
ethylene(L.L.D.P.E), UV(ultra violet )solid particles ,Master batch ,Additive Master
Batch ,Caplet (white and natural), D- type (white and blue )

Polypropylene

Polypropylene (PP), also known as polypropene, is a thermoplastic polymer used in a

wide variety of applications. An addition polymer made from the monomer propylene, it
can be produced in a variety of structures giving rise to applications including packaging
and labeling, textiles, plastic parts and reusable containers of various types, laboratory
equipment, automotive components, and medical devices. It is a white, mechanically
rugged material, and is resistant to many chemical solvents, bases and acids.

19
HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polyethylene high-density (PEHD) is a

polyethylene thermoplastic made from petroleum HDPE is known for its large strength to
density ratio.[3] The density of HDPE can range from 0.93 to 0.97 g/cm 3 or 970 kg/m3.
Although the density of HDPE is only marginally higher than that of low-density
polyethylene, HDPE has little branching, giving it stronger intermolecular forces and
tensile strength than LDPE. The difference in strength exceeds the difference in density,
giving HDPE a higher specific strength.[5] It is also harder and more opaque and can
withstand somewhat higher temperatures (120 °C/ 248 °F for short periods). High-density
polyethylene, unlike polypropylene, cannot withstand normally required autoclaving
conditions. The lack of branching is ensured by an appropriate choice of catalyst (e.g.,
Ziegler-Natta catalysts) and reaction conditions

LDPE

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is a thermoplastic made from the monomer ethylene

LDPE is defined by a density range of 0.910-0.940 g/cm3. It is not reactive at room
temperatures, except by strong oxidizing agents, and some solvents cause swelling. It can
withstand temperatures of 80 °C continuously and 95 °C for a short time. Made in
translucent or opaque variations, it is quite flexible and tough.

LLDPE

Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is a substantially linear polymer

(polyethylene), with significant numbers of short branches, commonly made by
copolymerization of ethylene with longer-chain olefins. Linear low-density polyethylene
differs structurally from conventional low-density polyethylene (LDPE) because of the
absence of long chain branching. The linearity of LLDPE results from the different
manufacturing processes of LLDPE and LDPE. In general, LLDPE is produced at lower
temperatures and pressures by copolymerization of ethylene and such higher alpha-
olefins as butane, hexane, or octane.

20
ULTRA VOILET

UV attack by sunlight can be ameliorated or prevented by adding anti-UV chemicals to

the polymer when mixing the ingredients, prior to shaping the product by injection
molding for example. UV stabilizers in plastics usually act by absorbing the UV radiation
preferentially, and dissipating the energy as low-level heat. The chemicals used are
similar to those in sunscreen products, which protect skin from UV attack. They are used
frequently in plastics, including cosmetics and films. Different UV stabilizers are utilized
depending upon the substrate, intended functional life, and sensitivity to UV degradation.
UV stabilizers, such as benzophenones, work by absorbing the UV radiation and
preventing the formation of free radicals. Depending upon substitution, the UV
absorption spectrum is changed to match the application. Concentrations normally range
from 0.05% to 2%, with some applications up to 5%.

23
CHAPTER
THREE -
MAJOR
LEARNING
24
3.1. Decide where to sell

Research is vital! Identify the markets with a little desk research. Find the consumption / import
figures of products similar to your own and the economic growth rate of a potential new market.
Look up the demographics, cultural and religious practices and your potential competition.

I was given the product FIBC bags and we had to search for the markets where we generally sell.

3.2. Choose a route to market

You can do one of four options:
1. Sell directly
2. Use a distributor
3. Use a sales agent
4. Create a joint venture.

Whichever option you chose, you must ensure clarity of responsibility for things like delivery
and payment and ALWAYS remember to protect your intellectual property.

During the orientation we got to know tht flexituff international limited sells directly.

3.3 Find the opportunities

Trade fairs are one of the best ways to find opportunities both in the UK and abroad. Meet
buyers and generate new business. Check with us about available grants to subsidise the cost of
exhibiting, or see if you can share the cost of a stand with another business.

We then were given UK as the potential market and we had to thoroughly study the market.

3.4. Start marketing

Adverts can help you gain exposure but can be expensive. As with the UK, be mindful of the
target audience and expense vs. return on investment. Another option is to create a website with
content translated according to your target market. Global social media sites such as LinkedIn,
Facebook and Twitter can also help you to promote your message quickly and free of charge.
Although these do not cost anything to set up, they need time invested to keep updated.

25
Whatever you use, make sure all your marketing materials have up-to-date contact details for
your company along with the person responsible for export sales.

We were then managing the posts which the company made on various platforms like indiamart
exportsindia , Alibaba et cetera.

3.5. Handle Trade Queries -

We were asked to handle trade queries and making sure that the potential buyer gets full
attention and accurate details. We also send the buyers, emails regarding capacity and price and
asked for their quotations and conveyed this to our marketing head.

3.6 MODE OF PAYMENT -

Letter of credit:
It is a written instrument issued by the buyer’s (importer’s) bank, authorising the seller
(exporter) to draw in accordance with certain terms and stipulating in a legal form that all
such bills (drafts) will be honoured. Letter of credit provides the exporter with more security
than any other.

There is a certain procedure in letter of credit which is as follows:

EXPORTER IMIMPORTER

NEGOTIATING PROCESS OF ISSUING BANK

BANK
LETTER OF CREDIT

CONFORMATORY ADVAICING BANK

BANK

26
Very firstly the importer asks to the exporter whether he is agreeing with the payment term
letter of credit. If he agrees then importer tells to his issuing bank to open a L/C then there is an
importer’s bank in exporter’s country advising bank which does further activities, if these banks
agreed then confirmatory bank comes into existence and pays to the exporter and takes the
documents many a time in between i.e., negotiating bank.

Parties involved:

Exporter: who is selling the goods outside from his nation?

Importer: who is purchasing the goods from outside the nation?
Issuing bank: importer’s bank in importer’s country.
Advising bank: branch of importer’s bank in exporter’s country.
Confirmatory bank: bank of exporter in the exporter’s country itself.
Negotiating bank: bank of exporter in the exporter’s country itself.

Based on differing conditions, letters of credit may be of the following types:

(a) Revocable and Irrevocable:
In case of revocable letter of credit, the buyer or issuer can cancel or change an obligation at
any time prior to payment without prior notice to the exporter or seller. When the letter is
irrevocable, the buyer cannot cancel or change obligation without the exporter’s permission.

(b) Confirmed and Unconfirmed:

In case of confirmed letter of credit, the payment is guaranteed by the issuing bank. When
the letter is unconfirmed, no such guarantee is given by the bank.

(c) With and Without Recourse:

With recourse means if the buyer fails to pay the bank after a specified period, the bank can
have recourse on the exporter. There is no such provision in the letter of credit without
recourse.

27
CHAPTER
FOUR -
SWOT
ANALYSIS

28
SWOT ANALYSIS OF THE COMPANY

4.1 Strengths:

Experienced R & D Department

Good Financial Position & TQM
Large Product Line
Large Production Capacity

4.2 Weakness:

Over burden on every individual.

Majority of employees are less experienced as the period for which they are working is
less than 2 years.

4.3 Opportunities:
The company is well known in Indore city and almost all the export-import companies
are handled by it. Being a renowned company it has a great opportunity to expand itself
in other cities also.

4.4 Threat:

Other small companies like Commercial syn bags, Bulk pack etc can be the threat to the
companies as
they provide the same products.

29
CHAPTER
FIVE -
SUGGESTIONS
AND
REFERENCES

30
RECOMMENDATIONS

The working environment of the company is very good but what I believe is that there is great
opportunity for us interns to learn about other working areas but sadly we could only indulge in
marketing as the time was only a month.

There should be some recreational activity in some duration of time as the employees may get
bored of doing the same work for long time.

There was a lot of time in our hands but we were not given ample amount of time and thus we
could have learned more and increased our knowledge more if we were given other or more
work as well.
