GREEN BUILDING FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

Abstract

Sustainability in construction work has become a crucial issue in the last decades. In the
building sector, material selection and the use of technology, can take up the obligation to
contribute making sustainable construction development by finding more environmentally
methods of construction and building. Besides the building sector, the regulation of
government and the Public awareness of the importance of Green Construction have an
important role to achieve the sustainability in construction work. Finding new material,
recycling and reuse, Careful selection of eco-friendly sustainable building materials may be the
best and fastest way for contractors to start integrating sustainable design concepts in
buildings. However, there are some barriers to implement green building in our construction,
such as the cost problem. The objective of this paper is to tell the readers how to implement
green building in their construction work. This paper also present the suggestion and
comparison to implement green building.

Introduction

Indonesia, as a developing country, has a large scale of construction market for the next 20
years onward. This big challenge in construction sector has led the Indonesian construction to
develop its competitiveness through capacity building programed for improved competency. In
the future, vision of the Indonesian construction is the finest built environment achieved by
creating added value through sustainability, synergy, professionalism and competitiveness.
This vision is achieved through strategic paths of building professionalism of human resources,
integrating value chain network among construction players and the people awareness of the
environment. In 2018 the total construction projects market (Building and Civil projects,
excluding Oil and Gas) is predicted to increase slightly by 3% compared to 2017. The total
Indonesia construction market is expected to reach IDR 451,337 billion in 2018 of which 65%
would be in the civil sector and 35% in the Building sector.

In the 13th summit of climate changes held by United Nations (UN) in Bali in December 2007,
Indonesia agreed to decrease the concentrate of CO2 on the air about 26% up to 41% at the
end of 2020 This agreement could be reached if all industries sectors including the construction
sectors have their commitment to environment issues/problems. And Indonesia has a blueprint
for the construction sector as a grand design and strategy called the “Indonesian Construction
2030”. One of the proposed agenda is to promote sustainable construction in order to use the
material efficiently, to reduce waste (waste of material) as well as to facilitate ease of
maintenance of post-construction building.
Construction activities itself produce enough waste. According to Ervianto, "The amount of
construction waste if we calculated each building area is 19.5 kg / m2 due new project
development activities, while the consequences demolition of the building is 757 kg / m2. In
several projects, materials that can be recycled like wood, concrete, red brick, metal reaches
75% of total waste”. In this case, the contractor has to take part actively concerning for the
environment, always improving the efficiency in the process of construction, energy
conservation, water use, and other resources during construction as well as minimizing
construction waste and managing all the process

So, hopefully in the future as the growth construction in Indonesia become higher, people or
contractors can be aware to the environment and started to consider the green construction as
their methods in their construction work.

Methods

In order to discover alternative sustainable building materials and low technology techniques,
which result in a more sustainable and affordable construction complying with the comfort
standards required today. Embracing green building materials is a good alternative to meet to
this objective.

This study used qualitative research methods. The data needed in this study include: (1) The
type of material that causes a negative impact (global warning, climate changing). (2) New
types of materials and innovations for green construction. (3) Environmentally friendly
technology and machinery. (4) Regulation of Government about Green Construction.
