Part A due Monday 1st April 2019 on TURNITIN before 23h55.


Part B due Friday 3rd May 2019 on TURNITIN before 23h55.
Word count: 1500 words each
(10% allowance either way but more than that = mark deduction)

You are required to research and write on one of the essay topics provided below OR come up
with one of your own. This research task consists of two parts.

Part A entails a literature review and feeds directly into part B which is your analysis and
argument. Note: You cannot change your question once Part A is submitted, so be sure of your
choice. You are required to:
a) consult and apply a relevant theory covered in the first 6 weeks of this course. Ethical
relativism, Pacifism, Patriotism, Realism, Just Way theory or Humanitarianism.
b) make reference to a specific case study, event or key historical figure.

1. “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.” Critically explore and discuss this
compelling assertion. Do you agree or disagree?

2. Critically explain the conditions under which humanitarian intervention would be necessary
or justified. Discuss in relation to sovereignty and its legitimacy.

3. Analyse the legitimacy of pacifism by outlining its advantages and disadvantages,


opportunities and challenges. Present an argument in support or opposition.

4. Argue for or against the requirement to treat soldiers on all sides as morally equal? What
does this mean and is this argument reasonable?

5. Examine the legitimacy and justification of a historical war or conflict. Explore its failures
and successes accordingly.

Part A: Literature Review (1500 words)


Due Week 5, Monday 1st April 2019
Part A of the research task outlines and establishes your base of understanding and frame of
reference. For this section you are required to:
1. Introduce the question and topic
2. Provide a brief description, background and/or historical context.
3. Perform a literature review on the relevant and applicable material related to your chosen
question and topic. Outline their contribution to the related schools of thought and
relevant theory. Must entail a detailed review of at least 3 of the most applicable and
academic sources, explain how they relate and explore their positions.
4. Minimum of 10 sources.
Part B: Analysis and Argument (1500 words)
Due Week 8, Friday 3rd May 2019
Part B of the research task corresponds with the literature review as you will be drawing from
its established context and sources, as well as exploring additional ones. This section requires
you to:
1. Present an argument and analysis drawing from your literature review and the relevant
theory related to your chosen question.
2. Discuss the topic in relation to an applicable event, historical figure or case study from
different parts of the world.
3. Conclude and summaries with a sound and justified argument.
4. Minimum of 15 sources (including the sources from Part A)

Formatting Requirements:
Typeface: Times New Roman, Arial, Cambria, or Calibri
Type size: 11 or 12 point
Line spacing: 1.5 spaced
Page margins: 2.54 cm
It will need to have references throughout the essay and a bibliography.
• NB: Use the standard INT Template on Moodle.
• Use a minimum of twelve academic sources. Your sources must be a variety of books,
journal articles, magazine articles, newspaper articles and valid Internet websites.
• Sources must be correctly formatted according to the Monash guide (either Harvard or

• NBNB: Please be aware that Turnitin may now pick up quotes and bibliography. YOU

The completed assignments must be submitted on Moodle and via Turnitin (before 23h55 on
the due date), which can be found at www.turnitin.com. Students will be registered on the
website by their lecturer and receive an e-mail with login details. REMEMBER that the
turnaround time for resubmission of essays on turnitin is 24 hours so manage your time properly
when you are preparing your work so that you do not miss the deadline. PLAGIARISM WARNING:
