Forest fun
Parkgate Primary School
recently took their Year 3 pupils
on a two night residential to
Foxhowl in Delamere.
Sarah Hughes said: “We had
great fun on the Habitat walk,
where we were allowed to cross
lots of rivers and the mud was
called ‘the welly eater’.”
They also made Dens and took
part in Problem solving activities
to develop team work.
Amy Bailey said, “We built dens
in the forest, our den was big
enough to fit the whole class in.”
They ended the 3 days with
orienteering in the forest. A great
time was had by both staff and
pupils.

WIRRAL GRAMMAR SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

Wirral Grammar School for Girls has been a Grammar School catering for girls aged 11-19 since 1931 and
they now have just over 1,000 pupils, 300 of them in the sixth form.
The results at ‘A’-Level are outstanding: There is a 100% pass rate and an average UCAS point score of 411.0.
67% gained the top A* to B grades. These results placed us among the top schools in Wirral and the North
West. In 2010 all the girls who applied to university were offered a place, the majority at leading institutions
including Oxford and Cambridge.
One of the schools many strengths are the number of girls studying mathematics at Advanced level. There are

M OST of us don’t want to think about dying

and so it is perhaps no surprise to learn that
in a survey conducted by the Office of Fair Trading
in February 2010, one in three people said that
they did not have a Will. We all know how easy it
is to defer this crucial decision by thinking it can
always wait for another day, but delay can prove to
be costly.
We will all die having left a direction as to whom our assets
will be passed. What type of direction you leave will of
course depend on whether you have chosen to write a Will,
or whether you have left this task to the State under what
are called the rules of intestacy. If this is the case then the
State will determine how your estate is divided up, which
may not always match your intentions.
Making a Will is crucial for anyone wanting to protect
their family from unnecessary anxiety and expense after they
die. Only with a valid Will can you be certain that your
estate will go to the right people. If you do not draw up a
proper Will, you run the risk of depriving your spouse or
partner of their home, increasing the inheritance tax (IHT)
burden and leaving parts of your estate in the wrong hands.
Indeed, one of the most common misconceptions is that if
you do not have a Will, your nearest and dearest will decide
how your assets are split. Sadly, this is not the case.
Not leaving a Will can also mean extensive legal costs for
your beneficiaries; failing to provide for a partner or depend-
ant will mean they will have to consult a lawyer to contest
the State’s decisions, with no guaranteed result. Complex
cases can require a genealogy expert, at great cost, to clarify
relatives’ rights to your estate.
It is particularly important for unmarried couples to draft
a Will - an unmarried person will receive nothing if their
partner dies intestate, regardless of how long they have lived
together or whether they have children.
Too many Wills contain elementary mistakes. These mis-
takes may mean disgruntled relatives can challenge the Will
after your death, helping generate more work - and fees - for
the legal profession, so seeking advice from a lawyer, who is
an experienced practitioner, is, in the first instance, always
the most sensible approach.
Many people opt for a so-called do-it-yourself Will, which
can cost as little as £10 from your local supermarket. But,
perhaps not surprisingly, many people who opt for the DIY
route make basic errors. Something as simple as naming
someone in their Will by a shortened name, may create
later problems when the Will does not match the name that
appears on their birth certificate. Such errors can be costly
both financially and emotionally.
Arranging for a Will to be drawn up
is relatively straightforward and, in
most cases, should not take much
more than an hour or two.

Exciting future for Nomads

Neston Nomads FC are flying high
this season – despite playing nearly all
their league games away from home!
The team currently play in the Wirral
Sunday League Division 1 after five years
of playing in the Houlihans Birkenhead
Sunday league.
They won five out of their first six games
– all away from home but then lost two
successive home games in the league
which would have put them top. They
have since enjoyed a couple of thumping
home wins in the cup competitions,
battering Imperial 10-0 in the Pyke Cup
and Ridger 4-0 in the Wirral Amateur
Sunday Cup.
The club was formed in 2004 by players
Matthew Ball and Lee Cairns and the club
started in the Houlihans League Division
Four.
They gathered momentum and more
stability and support and are now run by
manager Brian Tudor and secretary John
Foulkes.
The club’s recent honours are; Houlihans
Memorial Challenge Cup winners 2006,
2009, President’s Cup winners 2008, and
Tony Smith Memorial Cup winners 2005.
Nomads have a promising youth set
up from under 5s to under 18s while the
senior club are building a young, exciting
team in the Wirral Sunday League and
are showing a lot of promise in the
opening stages of the season.

Little Actors Youth Theatre is organising a games night for young people at

Swimming doesn’t get tougher than this!

A MOTHER and her son have completed arduous open water swims, raising
hundreds of pounds for St John Ambulance in the process.
Emily Rossiter completed the British Gas Great Salford Swim and Mike Mountford did
the Manley Mere swim in September.
Emily, who lives in Allans Meadow, Little Neston, said: “Salford Quays was cold! The
water quality was better than I expected although the announcer at the beginning did
make jokes about spotting the shopping trolleys on the bottom as we swam around!
I made a conscious decision not to look
down.... Getting to the end felt like quite an
achievement.”
They have raised £460 for St John
Ambulance so far.
They were due to take part in the same
event at Lake Windermere in August but
the water was considered too dangerous
due to a build up of algae. So they decided
instead to compete in separate events and
complete the mile that way.

L IFE’S little luxuries don’t come around
too often. We all like to be spoilt and
pampered once in a while, so when we were
invited to try out a spa day at Rowton Hall
Spa we jumped at the chance.
Spa days were once the preserve of the rich and
often meant travelling half way across the country for
a luxurious treatment.
Now, you can get all this and more so much
closer to home - Rowton Hall Spa is just outside
Chester - and it is an experience I would definitely
recommend.
I arrived at the health club and spa with my
colleague Lynne in the morning.
We had the whole morning to use the fully
equipped gym, swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi and
steam room.
Lunch was at 12 and after tucking into our delicious
salmon and haddock fishcake dish it was time for our
gorgeous treatments during the afternoon.
I opted for the Full body exfoliation, Rose facial,
De-stress back massage and Foot massage to finish.
The beautifully decorated room together with the
mood lighting, water feature and tranquil music was
heavenly.
Our beauty therapists Gemma and Andrea took us
through to our treatment rooms where they talked us
through our treatments and after getting comfortable
on the beds began with my exfoliation. The Spa
uses Aromatherapy Associates products all of which
smelt divine. The treatment left my skin with a lovely
tingling sensation.
My next treatment – Neck, back and shoulder
massage was one of the best I have ever had. The
correct pressure together with rhythmic movements
and the beautifully scented oils were wonderful.
My rose facial consisted of Cleanser, Toner,
Exfoliator, Massage oil, Face mask, and Moisturise.
The lightly scented products left my skin feeling
unbelievably soft and hydrated. On reflection I
would say this was my favourite treatment of the day.
I would certainly recommend selecting this on your
spa day.
My final treatment was the foot massage, not
something I would normally choose in a salon. But
I would definitely have this again because it not only
left my feet feeling soft but it was perfect to ease
tension after my am session in the gym.
To finish off this blissful day, we were back in our
robes and put into the relaxation room, where fruit
tea, fresh fruit and water were waiting for us.
Overall the whole day was truly delightful. The Spa
manager Stephanie Mckay has planned the pick ‘n’
mix spa days perfectly.
So if you’re looking for a special anniversary,
birthday or Christmas present or just something to
enjoy on any day of the week this would certainly be
something to think about. The day is excellent value
for money and is an experience we will never forget!

Neston’s role in slave trade

A popular talk on Neston and Parkgate’s links
to the transatlantic slave trade is to be held in
Neston on Thursday 4th November.
The move follows a similar event earlier this year
in Burton when many people had to be turned
away when the venue reached capacity. The free
talk will show how thousands of African slaves
were carried on ships associated with the local
area, and will look at the fortunes of many of
the vessels involved, including one called ‘The
Neston’.
The speaker, local historian and writer Anthony Annakin-Smith said: “Over recent
years an enormous of interest has developed in the eighteenth century slave trade,
especially regarding Liverpool’s role. This talk shows how even places away from the
city, such as Parkgate and Neston, contributed to this brutal trade.”
Sue Craggs, chairman of the organisers, The Burton & Neston History Society, said:
“When the talk was first given there was so much interest we had to turn people away
at the door. We have decided to run it again, in Neston this time, to give local people
another opportunity to find out about the area’s slavery links.”
The talk takes place at 7.30pm at Neston Town Hall. Entry will be free and
refreshments will be available.

At the October meeting members were given the details for the lunch at Wirral
Met College and the visit to Tatton for the Good Food Show. Julie Dawson was
also thanked for all her hard work organising the Life Style Evening.
Speaker Roger Copson gave a talk on Tulipmania. He gave tips on growing tulips
and explained how in the past buyers spent huge sums on diseased bulbs due to
their intricate markings. The annual meeting is on Tuesday, 2nd November and
the Christmas meeting id on 7th December, at St. Michael’s Church Marshlands,

Neston Civic Society are holding their Annual General Meeting on Thursday 18th
November at 7.30 p.m. at the United Reformed Church Hall, Parkgate Road. All
members are encouraged to come. This will be followed at 8pm by a meeting open
to all, when David Casement will talk on ‘The Laxey Wheel, Isle of Man’.
Members of the Society continue to keep an eye on planning applications for the
area, with special attention on the Neston Conservation Area. Just outside that area
is the new supermarket and market square development, and the Society has just
commented on the latest application. Members continue to look after plants outside
Neston Town Hall and at Neston Cross.

Q. I am in my 40’s, I have wrinkles but I am also starting to get breakouts of spots

too! How can I treat both when anti-wrinkle products always seem to be so much
heavier than regular products and cause the spots to get worse?
A. When choosing products for ageing skin people often reach for heavy
moisturisers and thick creams, but the texture of the product is irrelevant
unless your skin is also very dry. What helps to make a difference are the active
ingredients. What you need to look out for are products with ingredients such as
vitamins A, C and E or green tea for their anti-oxidant properties, ceramides or
lecithin for their skin-identical properties and peptides. Make sure that the active
ingredients are high up enough on the ingredient list to make a difference too!
A moisturiser with a sunscreen is essential to prevent further premature ageing,
but sunscreens can often cause break outs so be sure to find one that it non-
comedogenic (non-blackhead forming).
To help combat the blemishes the best option is to start with a product containing
1% to 2% salicylic acid. This helps to reduce breakouts and its exfoliating action
helps to make the skin feel smoother too.
