Student Reflection (Thoroughly answer all questions)

How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.
This clinical has introduced me to psych patients, with whom I have never met in a clinical setting.
Whereas I usually find I excel in therapeutic communication, I found that psych patients can lead me
to emphasizing that skill too much, so it was helpful, oddly enough, to define the REST of my duties
as a nurse, as opposed to the communication. Considering 1 in 5 people in the U.S. have a mental illness,
the probably is high that you have taken care of “psych patients” in a clinical setting.
Which objective did you accomplish during this rotation? How did you do it?
I greatly improved in Outcome 1, as I was able to assess my patient much more easily and
thoroughly this week, as opposed to last week, and I could, consequently, create and adhere to a
much more efficient care plan. Please check out my comment below about documentation.
What are your goals for your next clinical rotation?
Next is obstetrics, so I would like to use my deeper understanding of the dichotomy between caring
for the whole person through communication and caring for the whole person using strict assessment
to practice what I have learned about the topic so far. What?

Faculty Comments/ Student Learning Goals (Goals must be established even if performance is satisfactory.
If an item was identified as N or U, narrative comments are necessary to clarify student performance along
with goals to improve performance).
This week, re-submitted nursing assessment much improved from 1st draft with respect to outcome criteria.
Focused Interaction (patient education) assignment score = 45/46. Good job! See comments regarding APA
citations.
Eric, your assigned patients with mental illness issues appreciated the quality time you spent with them, and it
was obvious you greatly cared about providing the best nursing care, possible. You demonstrated skill leading a
patient education group with minimal planning time - you presented the topic in an organized manner, and
encouraged participation from all group members based on their ability to do so. You were treated patients with
respect and dignity while maintaining a fun sense of humor that brought smiles to many. It was a pleasure to
watch you.
For the future, continue to work on your documentation of patient assessment findings and nursing care. Keep
patient documentation simple, straightforward and factual. Think about avoiding superfluous information that is
time consuming to write and to read. Consider researching resources that can provide additional information on
nursing documentation in patient notes.
