Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Weather Instruments

Content Area: Identifying weather instruments and their purpose
Grade Level(s): 4
Content Standard Addressed:
S4E4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to predict weather events and infer weather patterns
using weather charts/maps and collected weather data.
a. Construct an explanation of how weather instruments (thermometer, rain gauge, barometer, wind vane,
and anemometer) are used in gathering weather data and making forecasts.
Technology Standard Addressed: 3

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☒ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): www.plickers.com

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☒ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☐ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: develop self-assessment and reflection
Representation: Information is represented in different ways
Action and Expression: multiple media is used to communicate

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The class will go over together about which instrument performs which function. The teacher will go over
how the Plicker cards work and the teacher will note to the students the importance of looking at the small
letters in order to get the right answer. Students will be handed out their Plicker cards.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The activity on Plickers will be done twice. Students will hold up their card in the direction of the correct
answer. While the cards are up, the teacher will scan the cards to get the answers and this is how the
students answer the questions. The first day will be for students to exercise how the Plicker cards work. On
the second day as a review the Plicker activity will be used again.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
1) What weather instrument is this? (8 of the questions)
A) Thermometer
B) Barometer
C) Rain Gauge
D) Aneometer
E) Wind Vane

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☐ Yes
☒ No
Why or why not?
This activity will not be taken up as a grade. It will be used for students to adjust to how Plickers works.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the activity students will have to go to different centers and see how the weather tool helps
meteorologist determine the weather. From there students will determine the weather for the day.
How will the data be used? The data will determine if the students can correctly identify each weather tool.
The grade given from Plickers will not be given to the students as a grade. This activity is more of an indicator
to how well the students can identity the tool.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. The goal for this activity if for students to be able to
understand how Plickers works.

Reflective Practice: I think the activity is simple enough to allow for students to learn how to use Plickers. This
activity can be used as an introduction to the weather unit. Using the tools after the activity help to enhance
the students learning because they will be discovering what each weather tool does.
