A VERY BIG THANK YOU!
Grateful thanks are given to everyone that came to the
first Lent Lunch on Thursday 14th March. Number were
a little disappointing but the day was truly miserable,
wet, windy and not inspiring for people to venture out,
However those who did brave the elements enjoyed a
selection of very tasty soups followed by a wonderful
selection of ham, cheese, salads and accompanying
pickles. The hand made soups were particularly
delicious with some people trying more than one
variety!
Everything was freshly prepared by the stalwart helpers
in the kitchen whose efforts were very much
appreciated.
The Residents Action Group would like to voice their
thanks to those who supported the cause and are
pleased to say that £150 as raised which will be
donated to The Drift magazine to help with its ongoing
production.

TATWORTH WI
At the meeting on the 18th April the
speaker will be Tatworth author, Emma
Down. She will show pictures of and
talk about the Historic Maps of
Somerset that are included in the book
that she co-authored. Two years ago
several members enjoyed a talk at Tatworth Wives
Group on this enthralling subject and are looking
forward to hearing and seeing again these wonderful
old maps which anyone who likes maps finds
fascinating.
During the March meeting members voted for their
choice of the new trustees to be elected to the
National Federation of W.I.`s Board. This year, for the
first time in several years, a Somerset member was on
the list of nominees. Nicky Amos was a Somerset
Federation trustee and chair- woman of their Public
Affairs and Science Committee. Members had
previously made their selection of new Somerset
Federation trustees from their list of nominees.
On the 16th May at their Annual Meeting, members
will have to elect the Tatworth W.I. committee for
the new year and a new president will take over as
Angela is stepping down after seven very successful
years. At this Annual Meeting members will also have
to vote on whether their delegate to the National
Annual meeting in June should support the two, out
of a short list of six, resolutions that received the
most votes nationally and so were selected for debate
at the meeting and then for possible further action.
One resolution is about declining bus services. This
asks that national and local governments take action
to ensure the adequate provision of bus services,
particularly in rural areas. The other resolution asks
that members encourage the take up of cervical
screening so that cervical cancer can be eradicated.
The Tatworth walk in support of the Associated
Country Women of the World (ACWW) ‘Walk the World
Day,’ will take place on the 26th April and the
proposed walk will either take place on Ham Hill or
Langdon Woods.
On the 3rd May, Tatworth W.I. will host the first
meeting of the revived Cerdic Group. This group
consists of W.I.s from Tatworth, Chard, Horton and
Ilminster. The speaker at the meeting will be Sarah
Williamson, who is the civil engineer currently in
charge of works at the proposed Hinkley Point C.
power station. A highly qualified engineer, she has led
a number of high profile engineering projects and is
surely a role model.

QUIZZERS EXTRAORDINARE!
A fun-packed evening enjoyed by a contingent of
quizzers from Tatworth (plus two from Devon!) took
place mid-February in the church hall. Such expert
knowledge from all present, even though some
questions were difficult (to some of us), meant the
participation teams of four per table had barely a
whisker between them on the scoreboard at the end of
the evening!
Jim Tucker, ably supported by assistant Sheila Jefferies
kept us all on our toes with a mixture of questions,
anagrams and other conundrums to get the old grey
cells working. Where is Hercule Poirot when we needed
him! Suffice to say the final score was a close call:

3rd Nuts, Whole hazelnuts, Ugg! - 124
Well done to everyone who came along to support the
evening, set-up beforehand and cleared away at the end
of the quiz, which raised £200 for church funds.
Dates for the future quizzes will be published in a future
issue of The Link. Tickets available in advance from
Helen Johnson, or on the door on the night. Do come
along and join us, you will be assured of a warm
welcome and a Brexit-free zone!

GOOD SAMARITANS
A big thank you to two WI Ladies, Mrs Rosemary Davis
& Mrs Jean Cochram who rescued me from the gutter
on the evening of 17 October 2018 at about 10pm.
Walking home from Tatworth Street I slipped on some
loose gravel and broke my left ankle. These two ladies
transported me home to Glynsmead and settled me in
my armchair.
I subsequently spent 5 weeks in Crewkerne Hospital
until I could put weight upon my ankle. I was wearing
old clothes; I had a mobile (no charger), no money,
and no list of phone numbers.
My neighbours Tony & Jane brought succour, Keith
brought laughter, John brought books, Sue brought
sympathy and my daughter bought & brought essential
items on the Internet.
I would not wish to repeat the accident, but the care I
was given in Crewkerne Hospital, and the help from
friends and neighbours made my stay that much less
of a disaster.
Thank you all and The very best wishes for 2019.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL YOU HARDY SOULS
WHO TURNED UP FOR OUR LITTERPICK!
There were one or two people who
came to help even though not in the
best of health at the moment.
I really mean it when I say you
shouldn’t have, but nevertheless, I
am very grateful.
The wind was a bit tricky - trying to keep everything in
the sack - but at least we didn’t get wet ! We collected
a considerable amount of rubbish between us, which is
kind of good, but bad that so much is there to be picked
up in the first place.
Surely all young children should be taught not to throw
litter so that it is ingrained in them before they become
adults?

11th April will be on ‘Garden Giants’ by Steve Fry.

membership fee, up to 31st December 2019, being only
£5.00 - amazing value - also for attendance at meetings

TATWORTH WIVES GROUP
Hester Down writes:
The speaker at our February meeting was the Revd.
Philip Butcher who talked to us about his life and his
journey to the Ministry. He told us about the places and
people which had most influenced him at different
stages of his life beginning at an early age by being
taken to the wood which inspired the ‘Hundred Acre
Wood’ in A A Milne’s ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ books, and a
later but still early influence was the books of Sir
Ranulph Fiennes.
Together these gave him a love of the outdoors and a
taste for adventure, both of which he was able to
pursue in the many extra-curricular activities at Milton
Abbey School and subsequently in a gap year on the
Falkland Islands working with sheep before obtaining a
degree in estate and land management and working for
ten years in Wiltshire and the Exeter area. Feeling
something was missing from his life he began to
reconnect with the church, and new influences began to
work on him such as the work of Henri Nouwen, a Dutch
Catholic priest and the poetry of R S Thomas. He gave
up a well-paid career to train for the Ministry in
Oxfordshire and after serving his curacy was licensed in
July 2017 as Rector of the Two Shires Benefice which
brought him to Tatworth.
At our March meeting we watched the film ‘He named
me Malala’ which gives an account of the life of Malala
Yousafzai who was born in 1997 in the Swat Valley in
Khyber Pakhtunkhua, Northwest Pakistan. Her name
means ‘grief-stricken’, and she was named after a
famous Pashtun poet and warrior woman from southern
Afghanistan. Her father was a poet and educational
activist and she was inspired by his thinking and
humanitarian work to campaign for education for all
children including girls. She also wrote a blog detailing
what it was like living under the Taliban where life was
restricted and many things including music, television
and girls’ education were banned, and in 2012 when she
was still only 15 she was shot in the face by the Taliban.
After initial treatment in Pakistan, she was brought to
the UK where she was treated at Birmingham’s Queen
Elizabeth Hospital and recovered to continue her studies
in this country and to travel to many parts of the world
campaigning for the right of girls to be educated,
meeting many heads of state including Barack Obama.
In 2014 Malala received the Nobel Peace Prize which she
shared with Kailash Satyarthi of India, and in 2018 she
returned to Pakistan where she was able to visit her
home town of Mingora in the Swat Valley. The Malala
Fund which she founded during her time in the UK offers
education and training for girls.
Our next gathering will be on Thursday 4th April at 7.30
pm in the Church Room when we shall be ‘Pebble
Painting’ with Carla Beckman.
APRIL - SPRING GARDENER
Spring - what a wonderful time of the year with every
plant deciding winter is over. Suddenly we are caught
unawares with a spurt in plant growth and warmer
weather – but where to start in the garden?
Tidy up all that winter detritus and do essential
maintenance of tools - sharpening, cleaning, clearing
and airing - sorry to be boring but maintenance should
always come first!
Next soil - every garden whatever its size requires
healthy soil. Soil is so often taken for granted as
everlasting and not requiring maintenance. It is not -
soil needs nurturing.
May I strongly recommend an inexpensive pH meter.
Simply stick the probes into moistened soil for an
instant guide. These meters give a pH, fertilty and
moisture readings at a manual click of the settings.
They work easily with a simple to read clear screen.
Check your soil has not become too compacted with
heavy winter rain or muddy boots. Lightly rake to
introduce much needed oxygen - remember plants
breathe (respiration) through their roots and roots
require movement to access nutrients and available
water.
Top up the soil with a dressing of fresh loam (clay/
sand/silt mixture) and then lightly dig in a compost and
manure mulch that contain the living microbes
producing the all important nitrogen mix for a really
surprising thank you from your garden plants - just
enjoy the rewards as the season progresses.
Soil is often so often forgotten, not understood, and
therefore neglected but it is soil that contains the vital
nutrients that plants depend on. Nitrogen (N) for green
growth proteins, phosphorus (P) for strength and
potassium (K) for flowering. Look for NPK on your
fertiliser and decide from your soil and plants what you
require for ornamental flowers or growing vegetables.
Vegetables generally prefer alkaline soil and additional
liming with a calcium product that may be required to
avoid dreaded club root.
If you have Ericaceous plants do not use ordinary clay
loam, use branded ericaceous soils that do not contain
calcium, but iron and manganese mixed in with grit,
bark and plenty of organic (compost). I favour a
generous ericaceous liquid feed this time of the year
and especially when flowering occurs from now
onwards.
Now for planting - but where to start in
the garden?
May I suggest simply list the plants you would like to
see in your garden, but then stop, think, and consider,
will they be happy where you intend to plant them. Sun
or shade, dry or moist - conditions are very important
to the planting.

What is on your list? A small tree or shrub, summer
bulbs, perennials, many flowering annuals add long-
lasting summer colour at an affordable price.
I advise visiting garden centres and quality websites but
don’t forget to factor in delivery charges, and that
plants are seldom as well advanced as those beautiful
specimens illustrated.
I spend many happy hours ‘just looking’, but you must
decide what is going to work best in your garden and
follow your garden plan as I mentioned in earlier
editorials.
Now April is commencing, take your time, but above all
enjoy the wonderful start to spring.

8th TATWORTH BEER FESTIVAL
It doesn’t seem possible that this year will see the
8th annual Beer Festival being held at Tatworth
Playing Fields.
 The next meeting is on 7th March, Philippa Louden
Since the first festival back in 2012 there has been
an explosion of differing beer styles to satisfy the
beer connoisseur. In addition to the well known
bitters, you can now try Porters, New Zealand IPA’s,
Black IPA’s, Sours, Bocks and Rye Ale to name but a
few of the fifty or so beer styles on the market.
The production of beer is a much more complex
process than say the production of wine, with the
type of water used being a big factor as well as the
choice of malts, hops, added flavours such as chilli,
strawberry, coconut, rum, and coriander to name a
few. Finally, there is the all important strain of
yeast that is required to secure fermentation.
If you would like to sample some different brews
then come along to the beer festival this year where
a warm welcome is assured:
Friday 19th April - 4pm to 10:30pm with a ‘Vinyl
Night’.
Saturday 20th April – 4pm to 11pm

with live music from Phil Short from London and a
BBQ.
ENTRY IS FREE and ALL proceeds will go to the

TATWORTH FLOWER CLUB
On 7th February members and many visitors enjoyed a
talk and demonstration by local willow artist Jenny
Knight in which she explained about the different types
of locally grown willows and their uses. Exhibiting many
of her designs, she showed the audience how to plait a
snail which we were invited to make.
The afternoon was great fun and everyone taking part
had a sense of achievement going home with their
bespoke snails.
The vote of thanks was given by Julie Kettle.

The member’s competition ‘Arrangement in a basket’
was won by Pauline Champion.

Modern’. The club competition is ‘Linear Beauty’.

On April 4th we have Kathryn Delve demonstrating
under her title of ‘Waste not, Want not’, with the club
competition being an arrangement in an up-cycled
container.

2QW. Doors open 1.30pm for a 2.00pm start visitors are

TATWORTH HEALTH WALKS
The walks have been going for about a year now and
apart from the benefits to our health, I think those
taking part agree, the social aspect of meeting and
chatting is just as beneficial.
On the first of April we will be resuming our walks on
Monday evenings at 6.30pm. so maybe if you cannot
make the Wednesday morning walks you could join us
for these.
We try to cater for all by walking,
re-grouping and resting as needed,
we go too far, or too fast, come
along and have a chat and we could
include a short loop to get you
started. Although we normally stay
within a mile or so of the village,
we could, on occasion venture a bit
further, if mutually agreed, any ideas are welcome. I
look forward to seeing both regular and new walkers in
the coming spring and summer months.

REVIEW OF TAPS PRODUCTION OF ‘SNOW WHITE’

Having seen several TAPS productions in previous
years, we were expecting an afternoon of fun and
laughter and we were not disappointed. From the
very start the cast threw themselves into their roles
with gusto - great voices one and all! It was great to
see so many young individuals attending the show.
From the opening scene we were hooked - the evil
Queen played so well by Angie Davies proclaimed to
be the fairest of them all but as everyone knows
Snow White is! We were taken on a journey with
Snow White (Kelly Foote), the seven Dwarfs and the
woodland animals played by the young cast who all
did an excellent job. Bogwort (Kevin Rogers) and
Stinkwort (Debbie Hilton) made a great comedy
double act and had the audience laughing at their
antics. Neil Gaylard deserves special mention too
for his hilarious portrayal of the colourful Dolly
Dumpling (loved the frocks!).
The design set was very good, especially the dwarfs
cottage. All credit goes to the behind-the-scenes
crew for the beautiful colourful costumes and sets.
All too soon good conquered evil, the wedding
celebrations were over and it was Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, all
back home we go!
What a fabulous performance by all - and
congratulations to the cast and crew - another
great Panto! We’ll definitely be back for the next
one - Oh yes, we will!
