Welcome!
The unit of competency, “Installing and configuring computer systems”, is one of the
competencies of Computer Systems Servicing NCII, a course which comprises the
knowledge, skills and attitudes in Assembling computer hardware and Installing
required operating system, software application and updates needed by the
company. The module, Installing and configuring computer system, contains training
materials and activities related to required application software, types of software and
software updates.
In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to
complete each learning outcome. In each learning outcome are Information Sheets,
Self-Checks, Operation Sheets and Task/Job Sheets. Follow and perform the activities
on your own. If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask for assistance from your
facilitator.

Remember to:
 Work through all the information and complete the activities in each section.
 Read information sheets and complete the self-check. Suggested references are
included to supplement the materials provided in this module.
 Most probably, your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager. He is there to
support you and show you the correct way of doing things.
 You will be given plenty of opportunities to ask questions and practice on the
job. Make sure you practice your new skills during regular work shifts. This way you
will improve you speed, memory and your confidence.
 Use the Self-Checks, Operation Sheets or Task or Job Sheets at the end of each
section to test your own progress. Use the Performance Criteria Checklist located
after the sheet to check your own performance.
 When you feel confident that you have had sufficient practice, ask your Trainer
to evaluate you. The results of your assessment will be
 recorded in your Progress Chart and Accomplishment Chart.

You need to complete this module before you can perform the next Learning
Outcome, Conduct testing and documentation.

MODULE DESCRIPTION This module covers the outcomes required in installing and
configuring desktop and workstation computer systems. It
consists of competencies to assemble computer hardware,
prepare installer, installing operating system and drivers for
peripherals/ devices, installing application software as well
as to conduct testing and documentation.

What is an Application Software?

Application software is a software designed to perform a group of coordinated
functions, tasks, or activities for the benefit of the user. Application software may
simply be referred to as an application.

B. Understand license agreement

What is a license agreement?

A software license agreement is the legal contract
between the licensor and/or author and the purchaser
of a piece of software which establishes the purchaser's
rights. A software license agreement details how and
when the software can be used, and provides any
restrictions that are imposed on the software. A
software license agreement also defines and protects
the rights of the parties involved in a clear and concise
manner. Most of software license agreements are in
digital form and are not presented to the purchaser until
the purchase is complete.

Application software is a software that you install on your operating system.
Application software is important to a computer system because of most task
that the user needs are in every Application Software.

1. Office suite

In computing, an office suite is a collection of productivity software usually

containing a word processor, spreadsheet and a presentation program. There
are many different brands and types of office suites. The most popular office
suite is Microsoft Office.

2. Portable Document Format reader
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format that has captured all the
elements of a printed document as an electronic image that you can view,
navigate, print, or forward to someone else. PDF files are created using
Adobe Acrobat, Acrobat Capture, or similar products. To view and use the files,
you need the free Acrobat Reader, which you can easily download. Once
you've downloaded the Reader, it will start automatically whenever you want to
look at a PDF file.

PDF files are especially useful for

documents such as magazine articles,
product brochures, or flyers in which you
want to preserve the original graphic
appearance online. A PDF file contains one
or more page images, each of which you
can zoom in on or out from.

A web browser is a software application for accessing information on the World

4. Media player
A media player is a computer program/software for playing multimedia files like
audios, videos, movies and music. Media players commonly display
standard media control icons known from physical devices such as tape
recorders and CD players, such as play (   ), pause (   ), fast-forward, backward,
and stop (   ) buttons. In addition, they generally have progress bars (or
"playback bars") to locate the current position in the duration of the media file.
VideoLAN Client media player or VLC media player is a sample of a media
player.

5. Antivirus
Antivirus software is a program or set of programs that are designed to prevent,
search for, detect, and remove software viruses, and other malicious software
like worms, trojans, adware, and more. Eset NOD32 is a sample of antivirus.

The purpose of Application software is to make your task-to-do easier and better.
Like doing your typing documents, spreadsheets, databases and presentations.
And even editing videos and graphics design. And also protecting your data files

A. Update application software

A software update, which is sometimes called a software patch, is a free
download for an application, operating system, or software suite that provides
fixes for features that aren't working as intended or adds minor software
enhancements and compatibility. Software updates are released to address
security issues when they occur, to address minor bugs discovered in the
software, to improve the operation of hardware or peripherals, and to add
support for new models of equipment. These small, incremental updates improve
the operation of your software.

Once application software update is available, it will notify you that application
software update is now available and ready to download and install. You can
see it or sometimes it pop-up on your system tray. And other application software
update will notify you when you are opening that application software
reminding you for a software update that is now available and ready to
download and install.

and software malfunction sometimes cause by the system update of operating

3. Protect against new-found security risks

Software update is very important in any kind of application software most of all your
antivirus. Antivirus is the one who protect your data files from harmful viruses. And
computer viruses are the one reason why your other application software are
malfunctioning and even system software like operating system. For better
protection always update your antivirus when updates are available.
