To whom it may concern:

It has come to my attention that one of our members is not exemplifying the
characteristics of a Delta Zeta woman. This member has teetered the line of unacceptable
behavior many times throughout her new member period, and her new role as an active
member of Delta Zeta. In this letter I will highlight and explain the behavior of Renee Berger to
be presented to the Judicial Board.
First, this member has been rumored of drunk driving. The current Risk Manager was
alerted of this and a sober sister gave this member a ride home. The next day the Risk Manager
and current president had a meeting with Renee to explain the severity. Renee explained that
she never takes her keys out if she plans on drinking. The two executive members took her
word for this, but there was another account of this happening. Her pledge class had a get-
together and the other girls assumed she had driven home, but nothing was reported. The
previous Risk Manager sat down with this pledge class and addressed the severity and liability
formed from these actions.
Secondly, this member was featured on a boys snapchat with the caption “This is why
you don’t drink and run.” The picture features the member bruised up and swollen. I
understand that her picture on someone else’s social media is out of her control, but I don’t
want members of Delta Zeta to look reckless, especially when alcohol is insinuated. Also, that
evening she was at a public establishment that an alumna works at. Renee was told to drink
water and was cut off from ordering any more alcoholic drinks. She then proceeded to show
the alumna her cuts that happened to be above the skirt, while standing on a stool. The alumna
reported that this was not the last time she showed someone her cuts in this public
establishment. A prominent member of a fraternity was present during this encounter also. She
was very loud and made herself the center of attention while exclaiming her membership with
Delta Zeta. This alumna was concerned for both this girl’s image and the image of the chapter.
Next, this member was featured within a social media group making out with a
fraternity member in another public establishment. Although this wasn’t public on social media,
the actions taking place are not representative of this sorority, and anyone could have seen this
unacceptable behavior. Other members of delta zeta were there and did not step in. Although
this is the only recorded account of this, there are rumors that this is a common occurrence.
In conclusion, I believe that Delta Zeta can help this woman become responsible
academically and socially. I understand that past life events can lead to different coping
mechanisms, and that excessive drinking may be her way of dealing with her past. She has
opened up about her past to sisters, so hopefully this support system can help her get things off
her chest and improve her overall actions. As a concerned member, I believe that utilizing
Marshall University’s counseling center would be more than beneficial, if she complied. Also,
this member may need more structure in her social and academic life, whatever this involves. I
trust that the Judicial Board will consider this letter and the programs installed into Delta Zeta
to shape truly amazing women.
