INTRODUCTION

Pornography or porn is the explicit depiction of sexual

subject matter with the sole intention of sexually exciting the

viewer. It is to certain extent similar to erotica, which is the

use of sexually arousing imagery. Over the past few decades, an

immerse industry for the production and consumption has grown,

due to emergence of the VCR, DVD, and Internet, as well as the

emergence of social attitudes more tolerant of sexual

portrayals. The content of pornography is a function of many

things including culture, biology, history, and technology. Over

time, pornography has grown more and more sexually explicit as

producers have taken advantage of the freedom that accompanied

the spread of democracy. Pornography and its appeal are nothing

new to mankind. What makes pornography a forbidden practice, is

it promiscuous and uninhibited nature.1

Pornography is rampant within society period. It is an

epidemic that is damaging the lives of young people, destroying

marriages, producing false views of sex and beauty, and

degrading men and women. The pornography industry has increased

rapidly, and its increased availability has weakened moral and

public standards that traditionally stood opposed to

pornography. The wide spread of pornography in our society has

changed our concept about sex. Pornography has become extremely

accessible through technological innovations and is now

virtually a mainstream form of entertainment within our culture

that is willing to accept hyper sexualized images and lewd

behaviours. A survey by the Barna Group in 2003 found that

nationally 38% of teenagers believe there was nothing immoral

about looking pornography.

If a person is masturbating to porn on regular basis and

begins to prefer and/or need that kind of stimulation to achieve

sexual satisfaction, he is in trouble and it is time to stop and

take a break and if one significant other is uncomfortable with

his partner watching porn it is time to candid conversation

about how porn is interfering with their committed relationship

and what they both want to do about it. When someone feel like

they need to sneak or hide their porn usage and they feel any

guilt or shame, it is time to seek out help in order to

determine on what is going on beneath the surface.2

Definition of Terms

Erotica

- Works of art that shows or describes sexual activity, and

which are intended to arouse sexual feelings.

- The use of sexually arousing imagery.

Masturbate

- Stimulate one’s own genitals for sexual pleasure.

- Sign of addiction from watching pornography.

Peer Group

- A group of people of approximately the same age, status,

and interests.

- Major aspect that affects the student’s behaviour and

performance.

Pornography

- Printed or visual material containing the explicit

description or display of sexual organs or activity,

intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or

emotional feelings.

PRESENTATION OF DATA

1. Why most of the students love to watch pornographic videos?

Most of the students love to watch pornographic videos

because it intentionally and sexually excites them with the use

of sexually arousing imagery. On the other hand in the real life

sexual practices, students would like to engage in the world of

porn because they like sexual variety and porn has an endless

selection to choose from.

2. What are the factors that provoke students to watch porn?

A. Excessive privacy and idleness

It is a no brainer that the temptation to watch porn comes

when we are alone and we have nothing else more pressing to do.

Whenever these two conditions are met, the urge to watch

pornography becomes so great that it is irresistible

B. Lack of ample knowledge about sex education

Sex education is high quality teaching and learning about a

broad variety of topics related to sex and sexuality, exploring

values and beliefs about those topics and gaining the skills

that are needed to navigate relationships and manage one’s own

sexual health.

3. What are the factors that help students to lessen or prevent

his addiction in watching pornographic videos?

A. Take a break from the internet.

The best way to ensure you won’t look at internet porn is

to eliminate the source—the internet. Put away your smartphone,

tablet, and computer, or give them to a friend or family member

for safekeeping. Spend a few days away from the internet and

allow your mind and body to detox.

B. Seek the help of a therapist.

If you are privately insured, look for a provider in your

network. Some other therapists in your area may offer their

services on a sliding scale. Do some research on your chosen

therapist and see if one of their specializations is addiction.

C. Try some new hobbies.

Find something new to do that you enjoy, particularly

something that will get you out of the house, or at least out of

the area in which you normally access internet pornography.

Whenever you get the urge to access these materials, choose

instead to do something new.

D. Use your imagination.

If you traditionally use internet pornography to become

sexually stimulated, try using your own imagination to turn

yourself on. If you are in a relationship, focus on your

partner. Imagine some fantasies and put yourself back into the

physical world.

E. Keep an open, honest dialogue with your partner.

Keeping a serious addiction problem from your partner can

jeopardize your relationship, and the trust your partner has in

you. Be honest and open with them about your struggles, and

continue to talk with them through your recovery.

F. Set up blocks and filters on your own devices.

If you take the measure to automatically block all

pornographic material from your electronic, internet-enabled

devices, the temptation to view pornography may be more limited,

and easier to avoid.

4. Does pornographic video affects the student’s mental,

physical, emotional and social being?

MENTAL

A. New studies are beginning to appear that link sexual

dysfunction to the frequent use of pornography. Additionally,

researchers are finding mental-health related to the

addiction. These include depression, anxiety, relationship

problems, and low self-esteem.

B. Pornography significantly distorts attitudes and

perceptions about the nature of sexual intercourse. Men who

habitually look at pornography have a higher tolerance for

abnormal sexual behaviours, sexual aggression, promiscuity, and

even rape. In addition, men begin to view women and even

children as “sex objects,” commodities or instruments for their

pleasure, not as persons with their own inherent dignity.

PHYSICAL

Effect on the Body: Pornography is very addictive. The

addictive aspect of pornography has a biological substrate, with

dopamine hormone release acting as one of the mechanisms for

forming the transmission pathway to pleasure centers of the

brain. Also, the increased sexual permissiveness engendered by

pornography increases the risk of contracting a sexually

transmitted disease or of being an unwitting parent in an out-

of-wedlock pregnancy.

EMOTIONAL

Pornography affects people’s emotional lives. Married men who

are involved in pornography feel less satisfied with their

marital sexual relations and less emotionally attached to their

wives. Women married to men with a pornography addiction report

feelings of betrayal, mistrust, and anger. Pornographic use may

lead to infidelity and even divorce. Adolescents who view

pornography feel shame, diminished self-confidence, and sexual

uncertainty.

SOCIAL

Social isolation

Watching porn, in most cases, demands isolation. Anything

which viewers do in secrecy usually leads to shame. One of the

first effects of frequently watching porn for men and women,

especially those who are young, is social awkwardness in public,

which ironically, leads to more shame and hiding.

SUMMARY

Students watch porn videos because of curiosity and ignorance.

Moreover, it is also because they lack attention from their

parents, so they tend to have peers, which later causes to be

pressured by their peers to engage in such addictive practices.

Furthermore, students also enjoy watching pornography because

they gain sexual satisfaction just by seeing obscene videos or

pictures; and enjoy masturbating while watching pornography.

Lastly they watch pornographic videos because it is the only way

to express their sexual satisfaction towards a person.

CONCLUSION

The wide spread of pornography in our society has changed

our concept about sex. Pornography has become extremely

accessible through technological innovations and is now

virtually a mainstream form of entertainment within our culture

that is willing to accept hyper sexualized images and lewd

behaviours. And engaging in such practices will affect largely

the attitude of the people who watch porn. They often become

rude and malicious to others.

RECOMMENDATION

Added supervision from the parents/guardians

Parents must always check their children every time they

use computers because technologies can trigger the curiosity of

a child to try and watch pornography.

Openness between parents and their children

It has been scientifically proven that if a child has an

open communication with their parents, he/she would tend to ask

their parents about things that he/she is curious about, just

like watching porn rather than asking other people that might

influence them to do such things.

Heightened security in Computer Laboratories of the school

There are times that students search porn sites or lewd

images in the computer lab secretly. The best way to prevent

these scenarios is by permanently blocking such sites (e.g.

youporn.com, redtube.com, pornhub.com, etc.) in all of the

computers, moreover, teachers destined in the computer lab

should have a strict supervision on their students.

Trying other recreational activities

Watching pornography is just like a vice that can destroy

one’s life; it can change a person’s attitude (becoming sexually

rude to others). So why not try other fun and enjoyable

activities just like including yourself in a sport, reading

books, going out with friends, and travelling with your family

is the best alternative instead of watching pornography.
