Make fine salt from a mixture of salt and sand by evaporation

Tools and Materials

A. Tools
 Spiritus
 Mortar
 Pastle
 Bunsen burner
 Glass rod
 Beaker
 Filter paper
 Funnel
 Evaporating dish
 Flask
 Tongs

B. Materials
 Rock salt
 Water
 Sand

What to do

1. Prepare a mixture of salt and sand

2. Put mixture salt and sand into the mortar then pound it into powder
3. Strain the powder that has been obtained
4. Enter the powder filter into a beaker that is already filled with water
5. Stir the salt and water solution in a clockwise direction and observe what happens!
6. Strain the salt solution into the flask using a paper and funnel filter
7. Put the salt solution into the evaporating dish then heat it using a bunsen burner
8. Now pure salt can be mixed into food

Question

What to write
Write down the date and title of this unit
1. Describe clearly the difference between the crushed rock salt you started with and the
purer salt you finished with!

Seen once when salt with mixed pasur is still mixed together united salt still
looks rough and large after being crushed there are some fine salt and fine sand
the end result of salt and separate sand and salt molecules become smooth.

2. Describe briefly in your own words how you made the rock salt purer (fit to eat). Use
diagrams if it helps.

first stir the mixture of salt and sand until smooth, then after the fine mixture
filter the mixture, then put the filter into the water, then stir until it becomes a
solution. then filter the salt solution, and the last one heats the salt solution to
evaporate and form salt crystals. the final result is fine salt.

Answer the following questions about makingrock salt purer.

3. What is the advantage of crushing rock salt before you put it in water?

if in the form of flour it will be easier to filter and more soluble in water when
doing stirring

4. When you put the crushed rock salt into the water what happens:
i. to the salt?
ii. to the rock?

salt dissolves in water, while sand is insoluble in water.

5. How does stirring the water help?

by stirring clockwise and stir until it becomes a salt solution.

6. When you filter the suspension what happens:

i. to the salt?
ii. ii. to the rock?

salt dissolved in water when filtered will pass through filtration, while sand is
not dissolved in water so when filtered it cannot pass through filtration.

7. Why filter the suspension?

because the purpose of filtering is to separate the salt molecules that have been
crushed with sand into the container

8. What happens to the water when you evaporate the solution?

the water will boil and then evaporate.

9. What happens to the salt when you evaporate the solution?

salt dissolved in water when heated salt crystals will form.

dian

4
10. Where are the impurities at the end of the experiment?

when the filtering process there are several fine grains of sand that pass
through the filtration, so that when heated the sand follows with salt and the
end result will be sand grains on salt. but in the experiments we did, we did not
get sand grains on the results of the experiment.

What to do

1. Prepare sea water

2. Add sea water to the evaporating dish and heat it using a bunsen burner
3. Heat until the sea water dissolves boilling and then lift and move it to the container
4. Drying the sea water that has been boilling in the sun for three days
5. After three days salt crystals will be formed, and we can consume this salt or mixture into
food.
