Physical Education K-12 Leadership & Professional Development

Physical Education/coaching majors must complete a total of 15 points before student teaching/internship.
Points may be earned in any of the categories below, with a maximum of 5 points per category. Students are
responsible for submitting verification of completion (letters from supervisors, team rosters, membership
cards, etc.) to their advisors.
Memberships
National or State Organization (SHAPE) (2 points per)

Local Organization or Club, and Professional Networking Organizations from recommended list (1 point per)

Certifications
National certification from recommended list (2 points per)

Other certification from recommended list (1 point per)

Research/Presentations
Deliver a presentation at a national or state professional conference or publication in a peer-reviewed journal or from
the recommended list (2 points per)

Deliver a presentation at a local conference, workshop, seminar or publication in an approved newspaper, magazine, or
newsletter (1 point per)

Leadership
Attend a National or State Conference, Serve as an officer in a National or State Organization or Club (2 points per)

Attend a local professional conference, Serve as an officer in a local organization or club (1 point per)

Fitness
Actively participate in a Level 1 approved event (2 points per)

Actively participate in a Level 2 approved event (1 point per)

Service
Volunteer at an SES event (3 hours = 1 point, maximum 4 points per event)

Volunteer at a community, Rec Sports, Athletic or other approved event (4 hours = 1 point, maximum 4 points)
EXAMPLES
Membership in Professional Organizations (5 point maximum)
2 points- SHAPE America, SHAPE Colorado, ACSM, NSCA, CSCCa, THSCA, ASEP, PEK, etc.
1 point- UNC PE Club, other service, social, spirit, departmental, and campus organizations, etc.
Certification (5 point maximum)
2 points- CSCS, EMT, ACSM health fitness, clinical or specialty coaching certs, ACE fitness
certifications, NSCA certifications, Wilderness First Responder, etc.
1 point- CPR, First Aid/AED, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Lifeguard training, Yoga
Instructor, Boot Camp & Circuit Leadership, Risk Management, etc.
Research/Presentations (5 points maximum)
2 points- Presentation at SHAPE Colorado convention, state or national research symposium,
ACSM conference, etc.; Publication in an approved peer-reviewed journal, magazine, website, etc.
1 point- Presentation at a SES or PE Club event, career services workshop, local research or
special event, wellness expo, etc.; Publication in an approved newspaper, magazine or newsletter
Leadership (5 points maximum)
2 points- Attend SHAPE Colorado, ACSM, NSCA or other state or national conference; Serve as
an officer for SHAPE Colorado, ACSM, NSCA or other national or state organization or club;
Honors achieved at the national or state level- National Society of Leadership and Success,
SHAPE PE Major of the Year, etc.
1 point- Attend an SES workshop, conference or speaker series, or other local professional
conference; Serve as an officer in PE Club or other local organization or club; Honors achieved at
local level- Dean’s list, captain of a sports team, scholarship recipient, service or spirit award, etc.
Fitness (5 point maximum)
2 points- Actively participate --- race (5K, 10K, marathon, triathlon, trail run, etc.); Intercollegiate
athlete (1 point per season, limit 2 points); sports training course (martial arts, boxing, dance, self-
defense, etc.); group exercise (8 sessions= 1 pt., limit 2 points); etc.
1 point- Actively participate --- outdoor pursuits trip (NOT FOR COURSE CREDIT hiking,
canoeing, climbing, etc.); daily workout routine (must present workout log, 1 semester = 1 point,
limit 2 points), intramural sports team (limit 2 points) organized university or club sports and
activities (dodgeball, kickball, volleyball, racquetball tournaments), etc.
Service (5 point maximum)
3 hours= 1 point, maximum four points per event- Volunteer – Fitness Gram (NOT FOR
COURSE CREDIT), participate in an SES research study, other approved SES event
4 hours = 1 point, maximum 4 points per event- Volunteer – coach a youth sports team,
community service events, athletic or rec sports sponsored event, Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart
event, Field Day, PE Track Meet, Special Olympics, Family Fitness Night, etc.
