SPECIFICATIONS FOR FABRICATION AND ERECTION
OF STRUCTURAL STEEL
I. GENERAL
A. Scope
3. The Structural Steel Contractor shall set column bases and beam
plates on steel wedges or angle screeds to elevations as indicated
on the drawings in such a manner as to permit grouting. Grouting,
unless otherwise stated on the drawings, will be by the Concrete
Contractor.
C. Deviations
50274#4 - steel 5
A. Except as otherwise specified herein, all material shall conform to the
A.I.S.C. Specification for the Design, Fabrication and Erection of
Structural Steel for Buildings. Materials shall be new. Substitution of
materials, sizes, or shapes shall not be made without prior approval.
B. Structural steel shapes, bars and plates shall conform to ASTM A36.
C. High strength steel bolts, nuts and washers shall conform to ASTM A325
unless A490 is specifically indicated.
F. Steel pipe for structural application shall conform to ASTM A53, Types E
or S, Grade B, open-hearth or basic-oxygen steel, sulfur content not to
exceed 0.50%, or API Standard SL, Grade B, electric open-hearth, or
basic-oxygen, seamless or electric welded pipe.
H. Steel plate flooring shall have an elongated, raised, four-way pattern with
plate thickness shown on the drawings. Plate shall conform to ASTM
A36.
50274#4 - steel 6
A. The Structural Steel Fabricator shall prepare AUTOCAD, release 12 or
newer, shop drawings consisting of erection diagrams and shop details.
The drawings shall give all the necessary information for the fabrication,
shop painting, and erection of the work and shall be based on A.I.S.C.
Specifications.
B. The Structural Steel Fabricator shall submit the completed and checked
shop drawing for approval. The approval of shop drawings will be for
size and arrangement of principal and auxiliary members and strength of
connections only, and shall not relieve the fabricator of any responsibility
for errors, omissions, or the accuracy of his own dimensions. After
approval, unless otherwise directed, one reproducible tracing of each shop
and erection drawing shall be furnished for record purposes.
C. The Structural Steel Fabricator shall submit one print, one mylar and the
AUTOCAD drawing files of the completed and checked shop drawings
for approval.
IV. DESIGN
A. General
B. Connections
1. The Fabricator shall design and detail all parts of all connections to
support 50% of the total uniform load capacity shown in the
Allowable Uniform Load Tables, Part 2 of Manual of Steel
Construction, Allowable Stress Design, for the given beam span
and grade of steel specified. However, when loadings, reactions,
stresses, or connections are shown on the design drawings, the
Fabricator shall be governed accordingly.
50274#4 - steel 7
2. Field connections shall be made by high tensile bolts and hardened
washers except as indicated on the design drawings.
C. Baseplates
1. Column base plates shall be flat, free from warps and twists, to
insure full column bearings. Column baseplates shall be milled on
the column bearing side in accordance with the A.I.S.C. Code and
as noted on design drawings. Press straightened slabs are
acceptable, provided they comply otherwise with the
specifications. However, when such slabs spring from the flat
after the pressing operation, they shall be milled regardless of
thickness to insure full bearing.
V. FABRICATION
A. General
50274#4 - steel 8
3. Ladders, ladder cages, safety gates, handrail posts, toe plates,
midrail and top rail shall be shop fabricated. Ladders and ladder
cages shall be shipped assembled, but handrailing may be shipped
knocked down for field assembly.
4. All “WF” columns shall have milled ends for full contact bearing
at splices and baseplates.
B. Welding
1. All butt welding shall be of the full penetration type, either double
welded or welded against a backing structure. Welds between
abutting members at right angles to each other shall not be
considered as butt welds.
C. Bolting
VI. ERECTION
B. Erection shall include the setting of all columns and bases, and erection of
all structural steel as called for on the design drawings including the
furnishing of erection bolts, but shall not include the setting of loose-
lintels.
C. For field welded work, steel electrodes shall be furnished by steel erector.
D. The steel erector shall use power tools and not hand tools for erecting the
steel wherever possible. Bolt impact wrenches shall include all
appropriate extension bars and universal joint attachments to the impact
wrenches.
50274#4 - steel 9
E. It is the responsibility of the steel erector to off load the steel. It is also
the erectors responsibility to store the steel in the assigned location at the
plant as determined by CertainTeed’s Construction Manager if it is not
immediately erected.
G. During erection, all necessary guying and bracing shall be provided and
maintained in accordance with the A.I.S.C. Code.
VII. INSPECTION
A. General
B. Scope
1. Shop and field inspection may include any or all of the following:

A. Records
2. All bolting, nuts, and washers shall be shipped prior to or with the
first lot of structural steel. Baseplates shall be shipped with the
steel requiring their use.
