Enrollment Down Under Hemphill

r. Brian Hemphill became
Radford University’s
president in June of 2016
when the previous president,
Dr. Penelope Kyle, retired after
nearly 11 years in the position.
The end of the Spring 2019
semester will bring us into
Dr. Hemphill’s third year as
Radford’s president.
With the available data,
we can learn a sense of how
well the university has been
doing in the years since the
beginning of Dr. Hemphill’s
Fall Term Undergraduate Headcount 2009 - 2018
Widening Our Hearts to Diversity in STEM

T
here have been many
celebrations of women
in STEM-related fields in
real life and in film over the last
few years. From things like the
recent trip that was supposed to
be the first female space-walk
(though side-stepped due to
safety precautions surrounding
available suits) to movies
such as “Hidden Figures” that
celebrates the women of color
whose mathematic calculations
helped NASA get to space, there
has been an increased look at
how women are treated in STEM
fields.
According to the Bureau
of Labor Statistics, only 25.6
percent of all involved in the
computer and mathematics fields
are women. Radford University
itself boasts of 58 percent of its
tenure, and investigate the five-
year strategic plan to examine
what progress has been made
on each of the plan’s goals. This
overview is not comprehensive.
Background
Dr. Hemphill was quite
different coming into the
position in 2016 than Dr. Kyle
was in 2005. Dr. Kyle comes from
a non-education background –
in the years before serving as
Radford’s president, she was
director of the Virginia Lottery,
and she also has a doctorate
in law from the University of
Virginia.
In contrast, Dr. Hemphill has

being female, but when looking
specifically at the Information
Technology department, only
22 percent of the faculty is
female, reflecting the national
percentage for the field.
Dr. Hwajung Lee, a computer
scientist and one of the four
female AP faculty members for
the ITEC department, feels that
a lot of the lack of diversity is
due to students being given
wrong information by teachers
and family in regard to what the
field is realistically like.
“In many situations when
a female high school student
picks the major, many adults,
family or teachers just say that
IT or computer science is not a
field for females, but for males
[…] This is a misconception and
wrong information that has been
started.”
She herself is familiar with
the struggle of trying to prove

a doctorate in Higher Education
Administration from The
University of Iowa and was the
10th president of West Virginia
State University from 2012 to
2016. According to Virginia
Business, he has published books
about topics concerning higher
education. Quite different
from Dr. Kyle, Dr. Hemphill was
educated for and had experience
running a university.
Fall Term Enrollment
The Radford Factbook keeps
track of enrollment statistics
such as Fall term headcount.
This measure shows how many
students are enrolled in the

computer science. As a student
applying to master’s programs,
she was told by a professor
that she wouldn’t make it due
to the fact that the school she
was applying to had never taken
a woman or anyone from her
undergraduate program. She
applied – she got in, pioneering
a way for women in computer
science at her undergraduate
institution in South Korea.
“Listen to what people have
to say, but don’t accept it. You
don’t know who will be able to
pioneer what if you let people
tell you to stop.”
She practices what she
preaches. Dr. Lee experienced
being the only female in
meetings, being discouraged
to talk, and has even been told
to dye her hair to look older.
She says that she feels that
because she is a woman in a
male-dominated field she has to
university at the start of the
term.
As the data show, the number
of students enrolled at the
undergraduate level each Fall
rose steadily during the latter
half of Dr. Kyle’s presidency,
peaking at nearly 9,000 students
in the Fall of 2013. However,
this trend has reversed in the
first years of Dr. Hemphill’s
presidency. Fall undergrad
headcount has fallen by nearly
1,000 students to 7,926 students
in Fall 2018.
Student Retention
The data offered in the
Radford Factbook only shows
retention numbers up to Fall
2017 because we will not know
how many students from Fall
2018 remained enrolled at
Radford until later in 2019. It
also only shows the data as far
back as 1996.
Student retention is down at
all levels from where it was for
Fall 2015 by mostly insignificant
amounts. However, the new
freshmen retention rate for Fall
2017 is significant, as the 1.5
percent increase in 2016 was
undone by a 3.4 percent decrease
and is the lowest retention rate in
at least 20 years, at 70.9 percent.
This figure is considerably lower
than the other lowest recorded
rate, 73.3 percent, in 1999.
Come later in 2019, we will
have 2018’s retention numbers,
allowing for a better but still
prove what she can do in order
to be credible to an audience or
classroom compared to the older
men in the field.
“We have to change this
atmosphere period. From a
personal perspective, I think
that this makes me a better
teacher and speaker because I
try to improve myself from that
negative motivation, though it is
bad.”
There has been a lot of
change in the last few years,
and Dr. Lee says this is a good
sign, but we’re not there yet.
There is more needed in order
to allow a diverse opportunity
for people of all genders and
racial backgrounds. When asked
about initiatives such as model

initiative to involve young
girls who are interested in
computer science and software
engineering, Dr. Lee said that
we need to widen our hearts

Strategic Plan
Adopted in 2018, Dr.
Hemphill’s five-year strategic
plan titled “Embracing the
Tradition and Envisioning
the Future” broke down the
university’s goals into six
categories and listed specific
goals for each.
Each goal in the “Strategic
Enrollment Growth” category
looks to increase different
student enrollment statistics by
three percent each year through
the 2023-2024 academic year,
something that may be tough
considering the considerable
drop we’ve seen in the last few
years.
However, it’s clear that the
main goals of Dr. Hemphill are
not focused primarily on student
enrollment. In fact, the strategic
plan’s goals seem to make no
mention of student retention.
One significant goal in
the “Academic Excellence and
Research” category is to “garner
recognition for signature
academic programs in health
sciences, healthcare, and human
services across the lifespan.”

now known as the “Equality in
Computing Club” to encourage
not only equality in gender but
in every way for all minority
groups to participate and be
represented in the major. With
10 very active members, they are
engaging with the community
through events such as speakers
and seminars to show there is so
much more to computer science
than what people might think.
“We are not whining. We
want to be good computer
scientists and I think that is the
way to achieve good diversity.”
The ultimate goal is
to encourage people of all
backgrounds and genders to not
be discouraged from pursuing
an interest in computer science.
Dr. Lee wants people to see them
as they, computer scientists who
are good at what they do because
of their own skill and ability and
have learned and been given
equal opportunity, not because
they are a minority with an extra
step up.
“This major, computer
science and information
technology is for everybody and
anybody. It doesn’t matter. It
isn’t linked to any gender.” The

adford University made
some changes to their
new student academic
suspension and probation
policies going into the 2018-
2019 school year. New students
include incoming first-year
students and transfer students
to the university.
The old policy which applied
through the end of the 2017-
2018 school year stated that
new students who fell below
a 2.0 GPA in the fall semester,
but had between a 1.0 and
1.99, were placed on academic
probation going into the spring
semester. They would have the
opportunity to bring their GPA
up in wintermester courses as
well as in the following semester.
Falling below the 1.0 GPA
during their first semester meant
automatic suspension, but now
under the new policy that was
enacted at the beginning of the
fall 2019 semester, new students
who fall under the 2.0 will be

placed on academic probation,
but will have until the end of
the spring semester to bring
it to the required GPA to avoid
suspension at the end of the
spring term.
The required cumulative GPA
if they want to avoid suspension
for the next academic year for
most new freshman is a 1.5
if they have completed 24-
35 credit hours. Getting a 2.0
will take them off of probation
entirely.
This shift kept Radford
University at a 90.7 percent
new freshman fall-to-spring
retention rate, which is about
a 6% increase in fall-to-spring
retention from last year’s
85.7 percent according to the
university’s Fact Book.
This policy change gives
students who want to be at
Radford a second chance to
bring up their grades if they
wish to pursue an education at
the institution. This also keeps
university seats filled from fall to
spring, when less new students
are being admitted compared to
the influx of fall admissions.

This could mean that
students whose intentions are
not to dive deeper into their
academics are paying, and the
university in turn as well, to stay
another semester in which they
could benefit from remaining
out of the classroom to settle
themselves academically as well
as personally and mentally to
return in the following fall.
This, in turn, would affect
the fall-to-fall retention rates,
which between Fall 2017 to Fall
2018 was 70.9 percent, with the
average of the last ten years of
data published (from 2007 to
2017) being 75.6 percent. The
new policy now can drop the
fall-to-fall retention rate lower
than it has been.
This cannot be concluded
until the end of the Spring
2019 term and the beginning of
the Fall 2019 term, and we can
then see if this policy then does
support academic success in
new students by allowing a more
extended probation period or if
it will create a retention gap for
the university.

you may have been
experiencing a rise of
sneezing, as Spring is in full
bloom. With high pollen levels
in the air, allergies are picking
up rapidly.
Since late January, trees
have started coming alive
after being dormant since the
Winter ended in March. The
peak season for allergies usually
arrive in late February and
continue throughout the month
of May. By the time the summer
months come, the peak season is
over, and less of the allergies are
typically gone.
During this period, grass
pollen is key, as the weather is
getting warmer and the sound of
lawn mowers becomes a normal
surrounding.
As for July-September and
November, your common Spring
allergies come back, and then
the Fall allergies take over.
Ragweed is the most dominant
as we head into the autumn
months.
What about rainfall? The
good news is that we usually get
a wet season as we transition
from Summer to the Autumn
season.
By the time we head into
the Winter months (December-

love to go back and try a

Legalize Drugs

A
ll drugs should be legal.
It’s not a very popular
statement in America,
but to reduce crime, government
spending, disease, and drug-
induced deaths, decriminalizing
drugs is a necessity.
First off, drugs do not
disappear due to laws; they
go to the black market. In the
black market, there is violence,
corruption, and no quality
control over the drugs. By making
drugs illegal, the government
has given up-regulation.
When alcohol became
prohibited in the early 19th
century, it led to the rise of

oes senioritis only affect
seniors? Spring is here,
and it’s here to stay.
During warm days and cool
nights, most students don’t
feel the need to stay cooped
up in their dorms, and most
afternoons the campus is lively.
At a point during the Spring
semester, some students begin
to get lazy or mentally checked
out, which is another term for ...
senioritis.
There’s no motivation to do
any homework, projects, essays,
or other assignments. Most
students are ready for this year
to be over and move on to a
much-needed Summer break.

The war on drugs has
caused a similar play-out in
terms of fueling large drug
traffickers. Since drugs are
always in demand, when one
drug trafficking organization
is caught, it leads to the rise of
another organization.
Over time, smaller drug
traffickers are weeded out,
leading to the rise of massive
drug cartels, such as the Sinaloa
Cartel, formerly lead by Joaquin
“El Chapo” Guzman.
If drugs were legalized,
it would put the violent
underground cartels out of
business, not to mention, it
would allow the government to
tax and regulate drugs.
The director of
undergraduate studies in the
Department of Economics at
Harvard University, Jeffrey
Miron, has estimated that “[...]
legalizing drugs would save
roughly $41.3 billion per year

I felt everything she said was
true; This semester is going by
so slow, and we only have a few
more weeks left, but it feels like
it’s taking forever.

The spread of disease is also
a significant risk surrounding
illegal drug use. This is due
to using dirty needles or
equipment.
In 2001, Portugal
decriminalized the possession
and consumption of illegal drugs
as an attempt to confront their
massive drug problem.
The Guardian reported that
in 2000, there were 104.2 cases
per million of people with HIV;
by 2015 that number dropped to
4.2 cases per million. This was
in part due to the government
providing easy access to clean
needles and equipment for
addicts.
Portugal also saw a decrease
in the number of deaths related
to drug use. A report by the
European Monitoring Centre
said “I’m a first year [student]
but classified as a sophomore,
I’d say I get checked out right
around after midterm grades.
I feel like at the end of the
semester the workload increases
so much and it’s draining.”
I’ve come to believe that
senioritis is a chain reaction. It
starts with seniors and works
its way down the classes until
the motivation to thrive this
semester is nonexistent. It’s not
like we lost all motivation to
succeed this semester, just tired
both physically and mentally.
This semester has been
taxing on both the body and the
mind. I think I speak for most
when I say we’re just exhausted,
and I personally just want to
sleep for ten days straight.

The U.S. isn’t even close
to numbers like that. A graph

Legalizing all drugs sounds
like a risky enterprise, but
experience and statistics show
that it could help American
society. However, before any
changes are made, a shift in the
public’s mindset must occur.
The current view is that drug use
is a crime, but the issue can be
handled better when viewed as a
public health problem.
It would be beneficial to
provide help for addicts, and
that starts by not locking them
up. The

that one should attempt to
incorporate in their everyday life.
I believe college students need to focus
on doing this. I say this because college
students often get so busy with their
daily lives that they tend to forget all
about their fitness and health.
Here are some of the best fitness
classes that Radford University has to
offer.
Personal Trainers
If you are planning on changing
up your fitness routine, or you are
interested in training for a sport, or
even one-on-one workout sessions, the
Radford University Student Recreational
Center offers personal trainers who are
held at the highest of standards to work
with clients and help them reach their
goal.
The personal trainers that are offered
are either already nationally certified as
a personal trainer, or they are currently
on that track.
If your goal is to lose weight, gain
muscle mass, increase strength, or even
improve your overall fitness routine,
they are always there to help.
If you would like to learn more

and Wellness Center offer as well as

Using Colored Pencils and Crayons
as Makeup

a colorful makeup look, but there are
healthier ways to do this.

Hair Straightening Treatments
If you have curly hair, it can be
tempting to swap your natural texture
for straight hair. Berkeley Wellness
states that the Occupational Health
and Safety Administration has found
some hair straightening products to be
unsafe. They can contain formaldehyde,
which can cause rashes, coughing and
wheezing when exposed to the product.
Make sure the product you are using
to straighten your hair is safe, or see a
professional hairstylist.
No beauty trend is worth putting
your health at risk. If you notice any side
effects from a product you are using,
stop using it immediately. Look for
healthy ways to follow the latest beauty
trends that do not put your body at risk

irginia Tech announced
on the evening of April
7 that they hired Mike
Young, a Radford High School
graduate as the Virginia Tech

Belyaeva was announced
as the Big South Player of the
Week Wednesday, April 10
making her the fourth player in
the program’s history to earn
the award. She is also the first
Radford University Women’s
Tennis player to obtain this
since the 2012 season when
Petra Dajevic and Mia Drobnjak
earned the honors
Vs. USC Upstate
Belyaeva kicked off her streak
of dominating performances
during the Highlander’s
controlling 7-0 sweep against
The USC Upstate Spartans on
April 3. She caught many eyes as
she led the Highlanders from the
prestigious number 1 position
on the court throughout the day.
Hokies next head coach.
Young at age 55 has just
taken over for the legendary
Buzz Williams, who recently
stepped down as the Hokies
head coach on April 3. Williams
is set to take over the Texas
A&M men’s basketball program.
Although the Hokies did
have a very successful season,
advancing to the Sweet 16,
Young will have an extreme
task ahead of him as the Hokies
mainly focus on rebuilding this
upcoming season. However, it’s
not a task Young hasn’t proved
he can’t handle.
The Hokies will be losing one
of its most dominant players on
the court in Nickeil Alexander-
Walker who recently declared
for the NBA draft taking place in
June, as well as a few other key
role players.
Young attended Emory &
Henry College where he played
basketball. He eventually went
on to serve as an Emory &
Henry Basketball Assistant for
two years, where it all began.
He then went on to spend a
single year at Radford University
where he served as the Graduate
Assistant.
Young was then hired by
the Wofford Terriers where he
spent 13 years as an assistant
She then went on to secure a
couple of 6-4 set victories as her
memorable day came to an end.
Vs. Gardner Webb
April 6, Belyaeva and the
Highlanders would host the
Gardner Webb Bulldogs in an
intense competitive matchup.
The ladies went on to defeat the
Bulldogs with a final score of
4-3.
The Khabarovsk, Russia
native kicked off her outstanding
performance against the
Bulldogs by recording the
Highlanders first point which
set the tempo. She then caught
fire and went on to defeat her
opponent 6-3 and 6-3 on court 1.
Belyaeva continued to
display her versatility on the
tennis court against the Bulldogs
throughout the contest when
she secured a victory in doubles
coach before he eventually was
promoted to the head basketball
coaching job.
He continues to display
his intelligence and ability to
control any program he is a
part of. Young undoubtedly
exhibited that this season as he
led Wofford to its domination of
the entire southern conference,
which led the Terriers into
capturing the regular season and
tournament titles
During his time as Terriers
head basketball coach, Young let
the program to a solid 299-244
record which includes five NCAA
tournament appearances in his
17 seasons with the program. All
of their five tournament berths
came while under Head Coach
Mike Young
Young had one of his most
successful seasons this year as
he put the Terriers in the right
positions to secure a birth in the
NCAA tournament as a seventh
seed. From there on the Terriers
went on to defeat the Seton
Hall Pirates during the first
round, securing their first ever
tournament victory before they
fell to a tough Kentucky Wildcat
team in the second round.
Young led the Terriers to a
strong finish as they concluded
with a 30-5 record this season
action as well.
Anastasia was unstoppable
throughout the week finishing
with an impressive 4-0 record.
Join the Radford University
Women’s Tennis team as they
wrap up the regular season
and begin to prepare for the
Big South Tournament kicking
off on Tuesday, April 16. The
tournament will take place over
a span of four days and will
conclude with the Big South
Championship match on Friday,
April 19.

Young accomplished
something special during this
season as Wofford went on
to make the top 25 polls in
February for the first time in
school history.
Throughout the 2017-18
basketball season, Young even
led Wofford to a remarkable
win at Chapel Hill, NC against
the North Carolina Tarheels as
well as a home victory over the
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Young has led Wofford
to eight winning seasons
throughout the last 11 years,
and during his tenancy, he has
recorded six seasons of at least
20 triumphs.
Young has had only one
losing conference record in the
last 11 years at Wofford which is
very impressive.

Highlander Lose Season Opener to Longwood

I
n the series opener against
the Longwood Lancers, the
Highlander’s Softball team,
unfortunately, were bested 4-0
at home this past Thursday night
down by the railroad tracks.
Radford’s opposing pitcher,
Sydney Backstrom, proved to be
unstoppable, only allowing two
hits across all seven innings.
The Highlanders were unable
to get anything going offensively
against the opposing team’s #99,
who has an 11-7 win record on
the season, as she struck out
14 consecutive batters in a row.
Backstrom was on fire from the
circle, leaving our Highlanders
scoreless.
The Lancers got on the
board first during the first
of seven innings when their
third baseman Alexis Wayland
scored off of a sacrifice fly
from teammate and designated
player, Jenna Dunn.
Wayland, who was almost
tagged out on her single hit,
was allowed a clear path to first
when a mishandled ball gave the
Highlanders their first error of
the night.
During the second inning,
in what seemed to be Radford’s
closest attempt at getting a score
on the board, Talia Douglas and
Hannah Medlam both tallied
a hit. In back to back at-bats,
Medlam smacked a single to left
field, and Douglas forced her
to be third with a double of her
own.
Already with one out during
the inning, Maggie Rowe
grounded out down the third
baseline giving the Lancers
offense their second out of
the inning. A wild pitch from
Backstrom sent the catcher
running after a whirling ball
which gave Medlam her chance
to bolt for home.
Unfortunately, Longwood’s
catcher was able to recover just
in time to tag Medlam out before
she slid into home plate.
That was the last hit the
Highlanders were able to collect,
which allowed the Lancers to

jump further out in front. They
added to their 1-0 lead with a
two-run homer in the second by
their right fielder jumping their
lead up to 3-0.
Kayla Huffman, the
outstanding pitcher for the
Highlanders, then pitched two
consecutive shuts out innings
but was then duped as the
Lancers scored off of a sacrifice
bunt that traveled down the first
baseline. They scored from this
but was courteously brought to
the Lancers by a triple play from
the previous at-bat.
The score in the fifth inning
was now 4-0, and that’s where
it would remain until the end of
the match-up.
Some upside for the
Highlanders was the play of
Hannah Morris. She relieved
Huffman in the seventh inning
and allowed two hits but
followed up with back to back
strikeouts, a season-best for the
freshman from Durham, NC.
Through six innings,
Huffman only gave up five hits,
four runs, three of which were
earned runs, and one strikeout.
The Highlanders Softball
team will face the Lancers again
in a doubleheader on Wednesday,
April 17. The games will be at 2
p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
This doubleheader will
come following a weekend
series played in Spartanburg,
SC against the Big South’s best
pitching corps in USC Upstate.
