Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Weather

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 1st grade
Content Standard Addressed: S1E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate weather data to identify weather
patterns.
a. Represent data in tables and/or graphs to identify and describe different types of weather and the
characteristics of each type.
b. Ask questions to identify forms of precipitation such as rain, snow, sleet, and hailstones as either solid (ice)
or liquid (water).
c. Plan and carry out investigations on current weather conditions by observing, measuring with simple
weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane, rain gauge), and recording weather data (temperature,
precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in a periodic journal, on a calendar, and graphically.
d. Analyze data to identify seasonal patterns of change.

Technology Standard Addressed:

1) Empowered Learner

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☒ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Design activities that in which learners get feedback and have access to alternative
scaffolds
Representation: Pre-teach vocabulary and symbols, especially in ways that promote connection to
the learners experience and prior knowledge
Action and Expression: Composed in multiple medias such as text, speech, drawing, or video

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the students beginning to use the Quizlet, we will spend part of class going over the
different forms of weather and weather tools by doing a hands-on activity. There will be different
activities set up around the class room that demonstrates the multiple forms of weather. One
station would have fake snow, another will have paper cups with holes in the bottom and a bucket

of water that the students fill the paper cups with to represent rain, and the fake snow in two more
forms to show sleet and hail. After wrapping up the activity, students will be directed to either go to
a class computer or use an iPad and access the Quizlet I created.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the activity, the students will complete the two games and the spelling and writing options
that are available on Quizlet. While they are doing the games and review activities, they can use the
flashcard that are offered as a reminder of definitions. While they care completing those tasks, I will
be monitoring the scores they receive in the games and writing and spelling study options. If any
students are having trouble with one of the activities or has any questions, I will be walking around
the classroom ready to assist them. There will be a time allotment of 1 hour for this activity.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
This activity is to review weather and the tools used in measuring weather so it is important to
provide the students with correct answers to questions they might get while working on Quizlet.
They can use the flashcards and list of terms in the set as a refresher on the topic and double check
themselves. After the SRT activity, we will once again go over why those answers are correct.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the activity, we will come back together to have a class discussion on definitions I noticed they
were struggling on and, I will give out a prize for the student who did the matching activity the
fastest. Students will be asked to describe some terms in their own words as to help their fellow
classmates who might be having a hard time grasping the concept. After we are done with our
discussion, I will display the scores of the gravity game and award the fastest student.

How will the data be used?

Student Response and Assessment Tools
This data will be used to see which terms we need to focus our reviewing on so that the students can
fully understand them. while walking around the classroom, I will pay close attention to which
questions they get incorrect and after school I will access the data on the Quizlet to see the scores
on the test and writing. The following day, I will provide students with extra practice for the terms
they are struggling with. Another piece of data that will be used is the scores from the matching
game. The top 5 scores will be shown to the class and the student who is number one will receive a
prize.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I am hoping to see if reviewing material by using the study and game activities on Quizlet helps keep
the students engaged and interested in the lesson. Also, I want to see if Quizlet can really assist in
highlighting problem areas in the topic. Students should be able to learn which terms know very well
and which ones they are struggling. They will hopefully tell me about these discoveries so that I can
help them with the terms they find difficult to remember.

Reflective Practice:
I believe the Quizlet will help the students in focusing on the terms they need more help on and
highlight which ones they know very well. This piece of information will put them one step closer to
mastering this standard and will come in handy when they have to take a quiz or test. They can have
access to it anytime while in class or at home so they can continue to review the material. Another
technology tool I could use along with Quizlet is the iRespond’s. When we are having the class
discussions after the activity, students can respond to my questions be electronically sending their
answer. This can make it easier for students to be vocal about terms they are struggling with and
help their classmates with definitions without getting shy or nervous about speaking aloud.
