Protest Research Paper

For your research paper, you will be answering the question, to what extent and with what methods are protests
successful? This question will involve you utilizing a couple of skills throughout the writing process. The first and most
important thing to do is to NOT FREAK OUT! I will be here helping you the whole way through the process. The first
thing you need to do is understand the task or question.

Answer the command term. To what extent:

________________________________________________________________________

Now apply it to the question so that you can understand it. Rewrite the question in your own words so that you
understand the task. Check this with at least 3 other students to make sure you are understanding the task correctly.

Recall that scientists/historians think differently than a lawyer. We as historians do not want to form our opinion and
results before we have conducted our research. We
let the research tell us a conclusion that you will then
write about. We have already started this research
together by examining India. You will need to conduct
further research into other protests and the methods
that they used to attempt to achieve their goals.
Record your findings into an organized format of your
choosing so that you have records of your research to
reference in the future. Be sure to record the web
address, book titles, page numbers that you will need
to use in an annotated bibliography or footnote
citation. After you have conducted research you will
review it and come to your balanced conclusion.

Step 1: Gather together information on other types of

protests from the 19th, 20th, and early 21st century.
These should be outside of American history! Here
are some sites to get you going, but you are not
limited to these. Take note of their success and their
methods! This is where you start, more research
should be done!

Step 2: Review notes and evidence and figure out how you want to organize things.

Step 3: Conduct more in-depth research to help gather specific evidence that you will use. Questia and google scholar
are your friends!!! This is where you will start to put together an annotated bibliography. Remember to cite using
Chicago style. OPCVL your source and talk about what information from it you will be using in your paper. Copy any
quotes or relevant information you might use onto the paper. You will use Chicago style method in creating your
annotated bib. Here is a website to help you in formatting your bib
(https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/717/01/). Here too
(http://libguides.enc.edu/writing_basics/annotatedbib/chicago). You need five sources minimum!

Step 4: After you create an annotated bib, we will move on to the outline process. This must be completed and is an
important part of the process. You are creating your roadmap of your paper. This will set up your structure and allow
you to start the process. If you do not take this part serious, it sets you up to struggle later! We will go over format
together in class. Try to be specific with where your details will go and start to set up analysis.

Step 5: Rough draft process begins after peer editing the outline of others. After peer editing your rough draft, we will
submit it to turnitin.com so that I can check for plagiarism issues. Make sure that you have been footnoting as you go so
that no accusations of plagiarism can be made. When in doubt you should cite!

Step 6: More editing to get to the final draft for submission.

*****What types of analysis should I be seeing?

Compare and contrast is one that I should be seeing a lot of. When talking about how successful protests are, you
should naturally talk about ones that are not and ones that were/are. What makes protests successful vs not? This is
where the methods come into play. You should be comparing and contrasting methods and as well as evaluating them.
Why did one method work? What was its strength? Why did one fail?

For example: When looking at protest A and their method of violence against the non-violent methods of protest be it
becomes clear that non-violence had more beneficial effects. Protest B used sit-ins as a way to garner attention and
bring sympathy to their movement. This non-violent measure is in stark contrast to the violent methods of mob
violence seen in protest A. Protest A’s violence sparked anger and polarization of all sides, leading to an inability to get
any message across as the protestors look like bullies. Where protest A failed, we see protest B shine as the public saw
them through a sympathetic scope, allowing for more peaceful dialogue that led to some changes in the laws they
sought to alter. This illustrates that peaceful methods such as sit-ins prove to be far more useful in the long-run over
short-term violence.

**Peanut butter and jelly example

This should be no more than four to five pages in length for your investigation. Annotated bibs and works cited do
not count for the length.

Font should be 12 point Calibri or times new roman. 1 Inch margins from each side.

India should be your first body paragraph. After that, the structure is up to you.
Make sure to use movements that have led to, or attempted, political change. A protest over school dress code would
not be appropriate. Something likes the #Metoo or #Timesup should not be used because we do not know their
effectiveness yet.
