Welcome to the Evaluation Booklet for First Explorers 1.
This book contains material that will help you to
evaluate what your pupils have learnt.
Evaluation for the teacher and pupils
Summative tests
In terms of summative evaluation, this booklet
contains an extensive range of tests, along with
answers, transcripts and marking schemes.
The tests in this booklet reflect the target language of
the course and the types of activities that the pupils
usually do.
Each test is supplied at two levels: Standard and
Higher. The language content and the audio are the
same for both, enabling children from the same class
to sit either level at the same time.
For Unit 1–4 tests and Term 1&2 tests, both Standard
and Higher levels are completely wordless. The
Higher level employs more complex tasks and/or the
use of additional distractors to make it more
challenging for more confident pupils.
For Unit 5&6 tests, Term 3 test and the End of year
test, both levels include some words, in line with the
coursebook. However, the Standard level tests only
require recognition and matching of words whereas
the Higher tests have more tasks with words and
might require words to be written (from a word pool,
for example). The Higher level tests are more suited
to pupils with greater familiarity with the written
form.
‘Now I can ...’ affirmations
This page allows the pupils to consider what
knowledge they have acquired. The child writes the
corresponding unit number in the top, right-hand
corner of each map if they know how to do what the
sentence says. They can also colour in the maps using
a colour code. This page has been specifically
designed to record the achievements of the children.
Vocabulary charts
The children colour the box or put a ✓ by each
vocabulary item that they have learnt recently and
can understand, say and read. Then, once they are
writing words, they trace or write the word in the last
box.
Course certificate
When the course has been completed, you can
provide a copy of this certificate for each pupil. You
can also copy this and distribute it to the class once
they have reached the end of level 2. This gives the
pupils a sense of achievement and allows them to
look forward to completing the next level of the
course.

Elements of self-evaluation for the

pupils
Self-evaluation pages (Activity Book)
Lesson 8 of each unit gently introduces the pupils to
the concept of self-evaluation, a key part of the
learning process. It is important that the children
realize that when they are evaluating themselves,
you are not testing them. In these lessons, the
children review the activities of the unit and
remember what they have learnt. They think about
which tasks they enjoyed and what their favourite
was. In this way they are encouraged to keep a
record of their own progress.
