TTW call class to the rug with slates and markers.


TTW review the value of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
TTW review grouping coins.

TTW call small math groups to participate in the school store.
TTW explain to groups that their team has gathered enough pennies, nickels, and dimes
to purchase all the items in the school store.
TSW each receive two items to purchase and will have to figure out two ways to purchase
the item using their coins.
TSW determine which way to purchase their item requires the least amount of coins.
*Modeling
TTW explain the value of each item in cents and review how much each coin is worth.
TTW explain to students how to purchase their items.
TTW model adding the totals of cents together.
*Check for Understanding
TTW check with each student the value of their coins and ask them to count their coins in
front of their teacher so they know the amount of coins and the amount of cents their coins
are worth.
*Guided Practice
.TTW review the value of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
TTW review grouping coins.
TTW explain to math groups that their team has gathered enough pennies, nickels, and
dimes to purchase all the items in the school store.

*Independent Practice
While the teacher works with one small group, the other students will be in their math
stations that includes, hands on practice with coins, online math games, and math
worksheets.
The students in the math group will practice counting their coins by themselves and adding
the total number of cents by identifying the value of each coin.
Assessment
none

*Closure
TTW model for the students how to add the total amount of money together so students are
aware of the total amount of money their group spent.
TTW go over the objectives again of what the students learned how to do during their
small group lesson.

Differentiation
With students who have already mastered the skill of counting like coins, TTW challenge
them to add mixed coins.
With students who are having trouble grasping adding coins, TTW only require students to
discover one way to add their coins.
