Professional Standard 4.

5 – Use ICT safely, responsibly and ethically: Demonstrate an

understanding of the relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible
and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching.
Assessment task 2 in EDFD546 – Development and learning, required us to consider three ICT
tools and understand how to use ICT in a safe, responsible and ethical way. Below is part of the
script I spoke to in recording the video for this assessment task.
All these tools have been developed for schools and so they are very safe to use, they are compatible with
referencing, but require diligence from the teacher that they are being used appropriately by the students
and the subject matter available and accessed on them are appropriate.

Kahoot!

This is a good tool for testing prior knowledge on a subject or as a quick class quiz to check understanding.
It’s fast paced and can bring out the competitive side of students in a fun way.

It’s a good class management tool and allows teachers to review their questioning skills and can be used to
support and respond to a variety of learning needs in the way that teachers can frame the questions, or
group students for the quiz or the puzzle. It has a discussion setting to facilitate discussion in the classroom.
It’s probably best used at the end of a unit of work for the teacher to assess how groups have gone in their
learning as well as the individual and is a good example of a constructivist tool as it has the students using
their own device but also looking up the front to see the questions. In terms of responding to the needs of
diverse learners all of these tools are good for that, and its really important as the teacher that you are
aware of and are across each of the student’s zones of proximal development and their competence level
and you can incorporate a wide range of those into these tools, including Kahoot. For example you can use
audio, reading or video questions to allow for different learning abilities. Increasing a classes autonomy in
teaching – get them to create their own Kahoot quiz for the class

Nearpod:

This is a great tool for classroom management because the teacher maintains a high level of control and it
has the ability to be used by a substitute teacher if necessary. It allows the teacher to monitor the students
during the class and assist if necessary. It allows for class discussions and for those discussions to be
recorded so that they can be reviewed later down the line of the unit content, and allows for collaborative
learning in that way. It also responds to the needs of diverse learners in that feedback and learning can be
done at a student’s own pace and the recording ability allows students who respond better to audio to
engage in the class. It is easy not to utilise that collaborative ability with Nearpod and keep the learning
fairly individualistic, so that is something to be aware of with this tool, that it is used to its wide capacity.

OneNote:

This is a software tool that is particularly designed for collaborative use and works in the style of a ‘Live
blackboard’ where one user makes a change they are automatically saved and broadcast to other users –
mainly the teacher. They can be set up in a way that allows students to interact and edit their own content,
and can be restricted in their ability to view and edit the content of their peers. SO in that respect, if there is
a particular class where you would like a great deal of interaction, you can adjust the user settings. You
should be mindful here that rules are in place in the classroom so that students don’t take advantage of the
privilege and behave in an inappropriate manner. There is a high level of monitoring with this software, and
as a teacher you would need to be highly organised because it has the ability to manage the entirety of the
curriculum you teach. Students can work on their own device or take a picture of worksheets or
reading/writing activities and annotate over the top using One Note software. This can increase
engagement for students with challenging behaviour and so this software would be great for addressing a
class where there are a range of diverse learning needs. This software really does rely on students usually
bringing their own device and part of the stipulation would be that they download software onto their
device so that their usage can be monitored across the day.
