How Much Free Time Do ASU

Students Have?
By Ingrid Diaz Nery, Rithwik Kalale, Jonathan Najera, and Ariel
Sloan.
Introduction

Our survey asked students across ASU how much free time they thought they had in a given

week. We had six questions in our form, and over 90 responses. The questions asked were:

1) What’s your year of study?

2) What ASU college/school are you in?

3) How many credit hours do you take per semester?

4) On average, how much free time do you think you have per week?

5) How do you think you spend your free time?

6) How many hours a week do you think you spend in-class/working?

Some were multiple choice, and some were short answer.

Survey Results

Out of our total 99 responses, no student answered the Graduate or Post-Bacc option. 57% of

students answered “Freshman”, 25% of students answered “Sophomore”, 13% of students

answered “Junior”, and 5% of students answered “Senior”. Judging by this, our findings may

2
pertain mostly to the younger ASU crowd.

Additionally, our top 3 most answered schools were:

1) The Mary Lou Fulton Teachers’ College (42%)

2) The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (30%)

3) The Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts (11%)

3
The amount of students taking certain credit hours remained consistent, with most taking about

12 - 16 this semester. The hours received were:

1) 5 credits (1%)

2) 6 credits (1%)

3) 12 credits (6%)

4) 13 credits (7%)

5) 14 credits (4%)

6) 15 credits (25%)

7) 16 credits (25%)

8) 17 credits (15%)

9) 18 credits (11%)

10) 19 credits (4%)

11) 20 credits (1%)

4
Most of our responses also indicate that students rarely miss their classes. 68% said that they

missed class 0 times per week. 20% said that they miss around one class a week, and 12% said

that they miss two or more classes per week. Since most of the surveyed students are freshmen, it

makes sense the rate of skipping classes is very low.

The responses to the question “On average, how much free time do you think you have per

week? (in hours)”were extremely varied in range. Some students said they had 0 hours of free

time a week, while others said that they had 78 hours of free time a week. The number of hours

with the most volume was 20 hours a week, with a 14% response. Some respondents may have

taken hours sleeping as “free time” which led to such big numbers.

Our last question was “How do you think you spend your free time?”. These were the choices

given:

● Social Media/Entertainment

● Going Out

● Sports/Exercise

5
● Reading/Studying

● Hobbies

● Napping

● Other

The top three choices were: Social Media/Entertainment (80%), Going Out (62%), and Napping

(44%).

Results / Analysis

After calculating our responses in Excel, we came up with various statistics about students at

ASU. For example, dividing our “classes skipped per week” question into years of study, we can

see that Juniors have a higher rate of not skipping class in a week (84.62%), and Sophomores are

more likely to skip class more than twice a week (20.83%). Sophomores (58.33%) and Seniors

(40%) had the lowest rate of not skipping classes in a week. In other words, although Seniors

have without a doubt the most workload, they are more likely to skip class. Additionally,

6
although a lot of Freshmen (71.93%) said they would skip class 0 times in a week, Juniors still

had a higher rate of attendance. However, since the number of respondents who were Juniors

were significantly less than Freshmen, these results could vary if we had more upperclassmen

responses.

The average free time per week amongst students at ASU was 20.7 hours. The most chosen

number of free hours was 20 (modal value). The median value was 15 hours per week. The range

was way bigger than we expected, with a minimum of 0 free hours per week, to a maximum of

78 free hours per week.
