Dialogic ® SS7 and SIGTRAN Protocol APIs

Dialogic ® SS7 and SIGTRAN protocol APIs support a comprehensive range of Signaling System 7 (SS7) and IETF SIGTRAN capabilities to manage the signaling traffic between an application and the SS7 network over TDM or IP. These SS7 components offer a rich set of capabilities to support high availability, scalability, and carrier-grade performance. Together, Dialogic ® SS7 boards, APIs, and signaling servers enable equipment manufacturers and developers to create cost-effective solutions for today’s modular networks.

Beyond the basic need to exchange signaling data with the carrier networks, the APIs provide the developer with a run- time environment that coordinates the execution of signaling operations among separate processors in the configuration:

the application host computer, the SS7 interface board with protocol acceleration capabilities, and remote signaling servers where messages can be processed without use of host computer cycles. The message handling software transports signaling information between protocol layers or between a protocol layer and an application layer transparently, regardless of the physical source and destination of the messages.

APIs are available for the traditional call control ISDN User Part (ISUP) as well as advanced Transaction Capabilities Application Parts such as CAMEL and GSM-MAP, and from the traditional MTP TDM-based transport technology to the latest IP-based SIGTRAN protocols. These protocol layer APIs are available as standalone software binaries for leading telco-grade operating systems including:

Solaris — Solaris 9, Solaris 10 (64 and 32 bit)

Linux — Red Hat 9, RH enterprise server, MontaVista, SUSE, and others

Windows — Windows ® 2000, Windows Server ® 2003, Windows ® XP

Dialogic SS7 and SIGTRAN protocol APIs are represented as a layered model (see Figure 1). The APIs run either on the Dialogic SS7 interface boards or on the application or signaling server host computer; Dialogic SIGTRAN protocols run exclusively on the host.

Note that MTP1 and MTP2 always run on the Dialogic SS7 boards, whereas higher layers of the SS7 protocol stack may run either on the board or the host.

Dialogic continually evaluates expansion of its coverage of SS7 and SIGTRAN protocol standards and country-specific variants. In addition to general market requirements, a feature request system is used to define customer priorities for additions and changes to products. Contact a Dialogic sales representative about protocol development plans or individual feature requests.
