N479 Leadership Management Shadowing Activity Form

Your Name: Michael Pautler Date of Activity: 19MAR19 Faculty name: Darlene

Who did you shadow (add their credentials too) : Angie Vargas, RN

Role of this leader and where do they practice? (Be specific)

The role of this lead is the day nursing house supervisor for the Oro Valley Hospital.

Discuss the benefit and value of this experience to you (Be specific).

For my leadership shadowing experience at the hospital I wanted to get a view for how
the hospital is run from above a direct patient care viewpoint. For this reason I did not want to
shadow the charge nurse, even though I know it would have been a great experience. I also knew
that I wanted to do the full 8 hours with the same person because I wanted to see as much of the
person’s job of who I was following. It turned out that by shadowing the house supervisor for 8
hours, I got exactly what I was looking for. The value of this experience was being able to
understand why patients and nurses are moved around how they are, as well as how the
emergency department can admit patients, even when they are extremely full. The house
supervisor is the field general of the hospital and both the nursing and physician staff depend
heavily on one person in order for the “house” the run efficiently. This job required critical
thinking and pulling from experience in the ED to assess patients and situations to figure out
what was best for all parties involved. Another role of the house supervisor is to sift through the
charge nurses from the units to figure out how many nurses and techs they actually need versus
what the charge nurse asks for. It is a game of respect but also tact in telling someone that they
are wrong without insulting people on a daily basis. This skill is incredibly important for a house
supervisor and without it the house could be either losing lots and lots of money, or patients
won’t have the right amount of care.

Would you recommend this specific shadowing experience in the future; why or why not?
(Describe why or why not)

I would recommend this specific shadowing experience for someone who has had
thoughts of pursuing a job in nursing in administration at some point. You don’t have to want to
go right to admin from school but even if you have had a thought I think this is a great insight
into this world slightly removed from patient care. I also think this experience is great to see the
reasoning behind hospital protocols that I think some of the floor nurses don’t fully understand.
This experience also gave a small insight to what a CNO does on a daily basis with all of the
meetings that the house sup and CNO go to together. I think this was a great experience to see
how the CNO depends so heavily on the work of the house sup.
